The Singles Guy 10.26.09: Sunshine on a Sunday
Posted by Jacob Crogie on 10.26.2009
Check out the latest from Nelly Furtado, John Mayer and a surprisingly low key Slipknot! Come on in, check it out, read, comment and enjoy!
Another week is in the books, this time marred by Machida's bogus retention over Shogun. What a crock of steaming shit. Shogun was all over him and all Machida could do was run around like a fool, apparently that constitutes what a champ is. What a terrible main event, highlight of the night was Rumble Johnson fucking up Yoshida. Enough MMA, lets get to the muzak.
Hot 100
John Mayer- "Who Says"
I can already tell that I will both love and hate this track at the same time. It takes a stupid random leftist political stance while augmenting that with the greatest line ever, "I don't remember you looking any better, but then again I don't remember you". Wow. The song is just what you would expect from Mayer, a nice little acoustic track with some impressive guitar work. It has a nice flow, and is simply a song to sit back and listen to, would you expect anything else from John though? The song debuted at #17 on the Billboard charts and looks to have a very bright future. Mayer really brings it vocally, smoothly discussing things far lower than changing the world with a hint of dry wit that would make Paul Simon proud.

Slipknot- "Snuff"
And now for something completely different. Sorry, it had to be said in this situation. This is a nice start, a little acoustic guitar which seems to foreshadow doom and gloom. This is a Slipknot song that I can get behind, the lyrics represent a tragically failed relationship and musically this track dwells in the understated acoustic rock, for most of the track anyways. The lyrics are very close to being too emo, VERY close but I'll let it slide as part of the genre. Musically, we have a crescendo at the end as the narrator continues to struggle with someone who wasn't there for him. Very powerful track that surprised me completely, I expected screaming and death. I received a powerful ballad which is sometimes too dark, but just depressing enough to warrant a listen. For anyone who has had their heart broken anyways.

Nelly Furtado- "Manos Al Aire" Tiesto Remix
It's Tiesto, so you just know its going to be epic. Even though I find the base of the song incredibly annoying, Nelly is terrible on this track and of course, I can't understand anything she is saying. That didn't decrease my enjoyment of "Lobo", but here...she is just terrible. Tiesto is amazing though, and that is who the real artist of this track is. There is an absolutely crazy breakdown part in the middle where I was flipping my shit wondering how he pulled it off. One of my friends was lucky enough to see Tiesto live, can you imagine the party? This track has some crazy synth and a nice buildup at the end, which all leads to more techno power than I can handle. Horrid song, phenomenal mix. A+ for Tiesto on this track hampered only by the terrible source.

Like It? Listen To This: Any of Tiesto's other remixes. Seriously.
Country
Blake Shelton ft. Trace Adkins- "Hillbilly Bone"
This has potential to be either incredibly awesome or absolutely terrible. Both of these guys are tremendous hit or miss artists and this track is mostly miss. I dislike tracks that dwell on country life and use idiotic stereotypes, like this one does. I am from the country...we don't all have a "Hillbilly Bone" as these guys insist we do. This track is hideously slow, I have to believe that with a possible increase in tempo, this one would be better. However, it is slow dwelling in stereotypes and instantly forgettable. Not worth your time unless you want to hear a watered down version of "Honky Tonk Badonkadonk".

Would you believe its not on Youtube!
FAIL.
Canadian Content
Stereos- "Bye Bye Girl"
More Stereos this week as their album just dropped in Canada. These guys burst onto the scene with the guilty pleasure smash "Summer Girl", and seemed to be one hit wonders. Their follow ups have gone downhill in quality and enjoyability. This track is no exception, its an R&B track without any real feelings. These guys are the Jonas Brothers with tattoos, or so it seems. I'm tired of the autotune shortly after the first verse. What a terrible song, only the love of a bunch of moronic 15 year old girls will keep these guys at the top. For now. Horrible lyrics, annoying autotune and terrible instrumentation warrant a terrible rating.

David Nail- "Red Light"
I don't know what it is about this track, but I can't help to sing along. A great example of what pop-country should be able to produce. He's doing Rascal Flatts better than they can.
So that's it for another week, be sure to tune in same time next week when we get all the latest and the greatest plus all the crap that everyone else likes...
The new Stereos cd all sounds like Summer Girl... EVERY SONG

i thought the guitar work was great on mayer's 'who says' but the words did nothing for me.
slipknot's 'snuff' is like metallica's 'nothing else matters', a good song... for another band. i mean "i still press your letters to my lips and cherish them in parts of me that savor every kiss.'?? that's practically n'sync.
