Dancing About Architecture Indie Music News 2.09.10
Posted by Ian Wright on 02.09.2010

The bit at the start

Hello, pushed for time again this week so lets get to it right away.

Beg, borrow, buy, steal or download this album.

At Last An Atlas - From Which We Were Raised

Lovely folktronica debut from Dubliner Greg O'Brien.

You news, you lose

More new music Joanna Newsom.

It was announced last week that up until the release of Joanna Newsom's new album Have One On Me later in the month a new song from it will be put up on the Drag City website. This means that at some point today another new one should go up. However last week's song is called "Good intentions paving company" and you can download it from the Drag City website here.

For what it's worth I don't think it's as good as "81", the first song that they released.

Jay Reatard cause of death revealed.

Memphis based site Commercial Appeal reported last week that the medical examiner's conclusion as to the cause of death of Jay Reatard, who passed away on January 13th was, "cocaine toxicity, and that alcohol was a contributing factor in his death." He was 29.

Given his age, job and reputation unfortunately that isn't particularly surprising news.

Again, I can't stress enough how brilliant a record I think Blood Visions is.

Lets go Saints, lets go Saints, lets go Saints.

Hey, did you watch the Superbowl last night? If you're a Colts fan you have my sympathies. But not too many. I lived in New Orleans for a summer a few years back so as a result the Saints are my team (that is to say, I was glad that they won but wouldn't have been too bummed if they'd lost).

Anyway, the reason that I'm mentioning the Superbowl is that you may have noticed last night that during the game yesterday that the NFL used Arcade Fire's "Wake Up" during some of their video packages. The proceeds from Arcade Fire's licensing of the song all went to Partners In Health and their work in Haiti. Given the size of the audience for the game this probably meant a pretty hefty chunk of change for the charity.

If you missed it here's one of the video packages from last night. Whoever puts these together for the NFL is very good at their job.

New Future Islands album.

In Evening Air is the new second album from super awesome Baltimore t-piece Future Islands. It'll be their first release on Thrill Jockey and is out on May 4th.

Tracklisting:

01 Walking Through That Door
02 Long Flight
03 Tin Man
04 An Apology
05 In Evening Air
06 Swept Inside
07 Inch of Dust
08 Vireo's Eye
09 As I Fall

Festival news, part 1.

The latest additions to the bill for this year's Primavera Sound festival in May are pretty tasty. Grizzly Bear, Built To Spill, Tortoise, Major Lazor will all play the festival which takes place in Barcelona from May 27-29. They join a bill that already features Pavement, Pixies, Panda Bear, Wilco, Shellac, No Age and Atlas Sound amongst others.

Liar Liar

Sisterworld is the 5th album from Liars and will be out on Mute on March 9th. It will be out on CD, Vinyl and as a special 2 CD version which will feature reinterpretations and remixes of songs on the album by the likes of Thom Yorke, Tunde Adebimpe, Devendra Banhart, Bradford Cox.

The tracklisting for the bonus disc was announced last week and is as follows:

01 Scissor (Pink Dollaz, Lance Whitaker & Transformation Surprise)
02 No Barrier Fun (Duetonal aka Alan Vega of Suicide)
03 Here Comes All the People (Atlas Sound aka Bradford Cox)
04 Drip (Kazu Makino of Blonde Redhead)
05 Scarecrows on a Killer Slant (Tunde Adebimpe of TV On The Radio)
06 I Still Can See an Outside World (Boyd Rice of NON)
07 Proud Evolution (Thom Yorke 500qd Remix)
08 Drop Dead (Fol Chen)
09 The Overachievers (Devendra Banhart and the Grogs)
10 Goodnight Everything (Melvins)
11 Too Much, Too Much (Carter Tutti of Throbbing Gristle)

Festival news, part 2.

The 5th annual Pitchfork Music Festival will take place in Chicago's Union Park in July (16-18 if you're really interested) and the lineup for it looks seriously impressive at this early stage. How's this for a couple of names; LCD Soundsystem, Pavement.

Those are the two stand out names amongst the initial batch of announced performers but there's also other really good stuff on the bill like St. Vincent, Lightning Bolt and Cass McCombs.

Tickets are on sale now with day passes costing $40 and a full weekend pass going for 90 bucks, which is a fucking bargain.

The lineup as it looks right now is:

Friday, July 16:

-- Modest Mouse

Saturday, July 17:

-- LCD Soundsystem
-- Raekwon

Sunday, July 18:

-- Pavement
-- St. Vincent
-- Lightning Bolt
-- Cass McCombs
-- Sleigh Bells
-- Here We Go Magic

The YouTube video of the week

Second week in a row I'm going with a St. Vincent video. This clip for "Laughing With A Mouth Of Blood," sees Annie Clark flex her funny bone somewhat.
