Dancing About Architecture Indie Music News 2.16.10

The bit at the start

Hey, happy Chinese new year. My Chinese ex told me last week that people who are born in the year of the Tiger are bad at finding people to marry, so the year of the tiger starting on Valentine's day is a bit of a kick in the balls then I suppose.

But on to music.

Beg, borrow, buy, steal or download this album.

Future Islands - In Evening Air

Fantastic synth-post-punk from the Baltimore three piece.

You news, you lose

More new music Joanna Newsom … again. And some other stuff.

In case you missed it last week's new Joanna Newsom song was a 9-minute long number called "Kingfisher", it's very reminiscent of material from Ys. The closing section of it also reminds me of some of the material from Sufjan Stevens' "A Sun Came". Very medieval. You can listen to it here.

In Newsom related news "Visions Of Joanna Newsom" is a new book which features a "selection of personal, scholarly, poetic, and artistic responses to her work." Or so says Roan who are publishing the thing. Contributors to the book include Dave Eggers and singer-songwriter Christian Kiefer as well as others. There's more info on the book, which sounds likes a load of wanky bullshit, here.

Also the tracklisting for Have One On Me was confirmed last week. It's as follows:

01 Easy (6:04)
02 Have One on Me (11:02)
03 '81 (3:52)
04 Good Intentions Paving Company (7:02)
05 No Provenance (6:25)
06 Baby Birch (9:30)
07 On a Good Day (1:49)
08 You and Me, Bess (7:13)
09 In California (8:42)
10 Jackrabbits (4:23)
11 Go Long (8:03)
12 Occident (5:31)
13 Soft as Chalk (6:29)
14 Esme (7:56)
15 Autumn (8:02)
16 Ribbon Bows (6:11)
17 Kingfisher (9:11)
18 Does Not Suffice (6:45)

Small Black sign to Jagjaguar.

A couple of weeks ago a friend of mine turned me on to Small Black, a 4-piece from Brooklyn in the form of an incredibly good song called "Despicable Dogs." Here's the video for it …

The band recently signed to Jagjaguar who will re-isssue a remastered version of the band's self-titled EP from last year on April 26th in the UK and the following day in North America. The reissue will also feature a couple of tracks that didn't feature on the original release, "Kings Of Animals" which was the b-side on the "Despicable Dogs" 7" and "Baby Bird Pt. 2."

Tracklisting:

01 Despicable Dogs
02 Weird Machines
03 Bad Lover
04 Pleasant Experience
05 Lady in the Wires
06 Kings of Animals
07 Baby Bird Pt. 2

You've got a nerve to be changing your label.

Whenever it comes out the next record from New York based garage rock big hitters The Walkmen will be released by Fat Possum records. The album will be produced by the band and Chris Zane, who worked on 2008's fantastic You And Me will once again engineer and mix the record.

That's about it for this story.

Ha ha, bonnar.

The initial round of band announcements for this year's Bonnaroo festival were announced last Wednesday and there's some pretty great stuff on the lineup with The National, Stevie Wonder, LCD Soundsystem, She & Him, Japandroids, Weezer, The Flaming Lips (performing Pink Floyd's Dark Side Of The Moon, which sounds potentially hellish to me), Dan Deacon, The Melvins and The Dodos all scheduled to play.

The festival takes place in Manchester, TN between June 10-13 and you can view the currently announced lineup here.

Raw Power reissue.

April 13th is the release date for the release of Iggy And The Stooges' Raw Power: Legacy Edition, and then surprisingly two weeks later it'll be followed up by Raw Power: Deluxe Edition.

The legacy edition will feature a remastered version of the album, with David Bowie's original mix on the first disc. The second disc is titled Georgia Peaches and features a recording of a live show the band played in Atlanta in 1973 which has been heavily bootlegged in the past but this edition will feature two previously unreleased tracks. It will also come with a 24 page booklet with essays about the band and writings by the surviving members.

The Deluxe Edition will feature all of the above which will also come with a third disc entitled Rarities, Outtakes, & Alternates From the Raw Power Era which will contain 8 tracks and a 4th disc which is a DVD featuring a 30 minute film called The Making Of Raw Power.

PLUS …

A reproduction of a rare Japanese picture sleeve 7" single of "Raw Power" and "Search And Destroy," five 5*7 photo prints and a 7" soft cover booklet with contributions from Henry Rollins, Lou Reed, Joan Jett, Tom Morello and others. If you want the deluxe edition earlier than April 27th then you can order it from the Stooges website.

Knackered.

Doug Fieger, frontman of The Knack, passed away on Sunday of Cancer at the age of 57 in Woodland Hills California.

Fieger founded The Knack in 1978 and the following year the band released their biggest hit, and a song that pretty much everybody has heard, "My Sharona", which topped the Billboard singles charts for 6 weeks. The band released 7 albums over the course of their career but never really replicated the success of that single.

I heard a very funny but in incredibly poor taste joke about Fieger passing away. I won't repeat it in full but it involves the word "lymphoma."

New Bonnie "Prince" Billy.

First off a warning, these clips isn't all that SFW.

The above videos appeared online last week and were posted by Will Oldham's UK record label Domino and his American one Drag City which seem to indicated that there's a new Oldham record (credited to Bonnie "Prince" Billy and The Chain Gang) called The Wonder Show Of The World and it seems that depending on where you are in the world it'll be out on March 22nd or the 23rd. As yet though neither label are confirming the release.
