Dancing About Architecture Indie Music News: 5.25.10

The bit at the start

Hey dudarinos, sorry for skipping last week but last Monday was utterly hectic for me and I only finally made it home at 1AM so any notion that I might actually deliver a column was met with a quick "fuck that" in my internal monologue.

Anyway in the last couple of weeks I've seen a whole bunch of bands including Built To Spill, Dinosaur Jr., Mission Of Burma, Wolf Parade and Dum Dum Girls. The only one I really didn't enjoy was Dinosaur, mostly because BTS had opened and I like them a whole lot more. They're a really hard act to follow. Wolf Parade's new record Expo 86 is better than their last but not a patch on the debut however live the material sounds really good, particularly "Yulia", plus I got to hear a bunch of my favourite songs of the last decade in "Shine A Light", "This Hearts On Fire" and "I'll believe in anything."

All of those bands I'd seen before bar Dum Dum Girls and I should make special mention of how impressive they were last Tuesday. I've only discovered the charms of their debut album I will be in the last couple of months but their take on classic girl-pop mixed with garage rock and Ramones style punk has really captured my imagination recently. Live they're a little more varied in their sound and while not the most engaging band on stage their act matches the overall vibe of what they do pretty well.

Beg, borrow, buy, steal or download this album.

Dum Dum Girls – I will be

I've already said plenty of nice things about it above.

You news, you lose

New Arcade Fire Music? Yes please.

Things have sort of been quiet on the Arcade Fire front lately, or at least quieter than you would think considering that the band have a number of summer festival dates booked and it's widely assumed a new album due for release this year.

Things finally started to happen with regard to new music on Thursday when snippits of two new songs "The Suburbs" and "Month Of May" were put up on their website. The songs will be released in full in a couple of weeks on a double a-side 12" vinyl. Exact details (even the release date, some sources are saying next week, others are saying it'll be at least 2) are a bit sketchy but early indications are that it's going to be a VERY limited edition white label run.

You can listen to the excerpts of the songs below …

Hear Jay Bennett's final album.

A little over a year after ex Wilco member Jay Bennett died at the age of 45 his final solo album Kicking At The Perfumed Air will be released online as a free download on July 10. Though free donations will be accepted on behalf of the Jay Bennett Foundation, an organisation set up by his mother and brother to raise funds for "music and education."

There will also be a physical CD release with proceeds from that also going to the Foundation.

In a press release Bennett's brother Jeff said, "Those of us who loved Jay lost a son, a brother, a collaborator and a loyal friend. The world lost a gifted musician, thoughtful song-writer and uniquely creative force in the studio who was always working to make music better. This album is part of a larger effort to honor Jay's memory and enhance his legacy by exposing more people to his music and by supporting charitable efforts to make the world a better place."

There's also a couple of songs available to download from the record, M Plates in particular is pretty great.

Live Mogwai.

The release date for the long promised Vincent Moon directed Mogwai live DVD Burning was announced last week. August 24th is the happy day that the band's own Rock Action Records will put out the film, which will also include a copy of Special Moves, the band's first ever live album.`

If you go here and enter your e-mail address you can receive the Special Moves version of "New Paths to Helicon Pt. 1," or you could just watch the trailer for the flick …

A box set of box sets.

This just blows my tiny fucking mind. In September Columbia/Legacy will release The Genius Of Miles Davis, a 43 disc collection that, get this, is a box set comprised of box sets.

I KNOW!

The collection will feature 8 already released collection in one trumpet case shaped lot, namely:

Miles Davis & Gil Evans: The Complete Columbia Studio Recordings
Miles Davis Quintet 1965-'68: The Complete Columbia Studio Recordings
The Complete Bitches Brew Sessions
Miles Davis & John Coltrane: The Complete Columbia Recordings 1955-1961
The Complete In a Silent Way Sessions
Seven Steps: The Complete Columbia Recordings of Miles Davis 1963-1964
The Complete Jack Johnson Sessions
The Complete On the Corner Sessions

I think this is the sort of thing that the phrase "for completests only"
