Primavera Sound festival thoughts, Arcade Fire are back, the Israeli indie-rock boycott, news on Interpol, new albums from Phil Selway, Superchunk, The Dodos
&showThe bit at the start
Happy Tuesday again folks. I'm back after another week off. This time down to the rather excellent Primavera Sound festival which took place in Barcelona the weekend before this one just past. My third time there in 4 years and I have to say it was by far the most enjoyable one I've been to. When you get to 4AM on the final night of a festival, still nearly 5 hours from going to bed and you wind up commandeering a wheelchair for a ride you're never not having fun.
Anyway; Pavement, Best Coast, Titus Andronicus, Owen Pallett, Fuck Buttons, Shellac, Tortoise, Moderat, Les Savy Fav, Polvo, Built To Spill, Dum Dum Girls and Liquid Liquid were all fantastic. I doubt I'd see a better lineup anywhere in the world this year. Roll on 2011.
Beg, borrow, buy, steal or download this album.
Quintette du Hot Club de France – ANYTHING BY THEM.
Trust me, amazing shit.
You news, you lose
Arcade Fire are back.
So the big news while I was away was probably that Arcade Fire announced the title and release date of their forthcoming third album. It'll be called The Suburbs and it'll be out, depending on where you live in the world, on August 2/3.
The band returned to live action on Friday night at Notman House in Montreal (also brilliantly known as the Margaret Home For The Incurables) for a very secret/private gig attended by about 60 or so people. Given that the audience seems to have been made up of people that are known to the band very little audio or video from the gig has crept out online save for these clips from Pop Montreal …
However they are returning to playing proper gigs this week in Sherbrooke, Quebec and actually by the time this column goes live on Tuesday morning they'll have finished up the first show and I imagine that live footage will have already cropped up on YouTube. At Friday's gig they played 8 new tunes so I'd imagine at least that many will get an airing this week.
Oh, oh, oh, by the way. If you live in Montreal they're playing the parking lot next to Place Longueuil on Wednesday. Also they're doing a secret gig somewhere in Toronto at the weekend but I don't have details on that.
(oh) VEY! Been trying to meet you.
I know this is a sensitive subject so I'm going to approach this story as though this were a Masonic meeting and keep politics and religion out of it (for real, they're supposed to not discuss either at their meetings, but how do they secretly run the world and scapegoat the jews I hear you say. I don't know, they just do). As I'm sure you're aware there was a bit of unpleasantness last week on a boat involving the people on it and the Israeli Defence Forces.
Anyway whatever the rights or wrongs of whatever went down as a result of it the AP are reporting that a number of bands have pulled out of the Pic.Nic festival in Tel Aviv this week as a result of … well, you know. Those being Pixies, Gorillaz and Klaxons (I've got a gag here but dammit, I can't use it, I really don't like Klaxons).
Also scheduled to play Israel but not anymore was Elvis Costello who also recently cancelled a couple of dates there, though they were pulled prior to that thing I've been skirting around. Explaining his reasoning Costello issued a statement saying, "There are occasions when merely having your name added to a concert schedule may be interpreted as a political act that resonates more than anything that might be sung and it may be assumed that one has no mind for the suffering of the innocent... It is a matter of instinct and conscience."
Interpol News.
The title of Interpol's upcoming, presumably not as good as their first record, new album is called uhh … Interpol, obviously they forgot the NEVER CALL YOUR ALBUM THE NAME OF THE BAND UNLESS IT'S YOUR DEBUT rule.
Anyway for those of you that are distraught by the notion of an Interpol without cool bassist Carlos D the band announced his replacement last week and it's no other than indie royalty Dave Pajo. Pajo is most noted as a member of Sling but over the years has also played with/in the likes of Steroelab, Tortoise, Zwan, The Yeah Yeah Yeah's and Bonnie "Prince" Billie amongst others as well was releasing his own material under the names Papa M., Pajo, Aeriel M. and M. He's most noted as a guitar player but I'm sure he can handle this gig.
