Philip Glass live, news on the new Arcade Fire record, Matt Berninger vs. the USA, a Snow Patrol Side project, the new No Age album, the new Wavves album and more.
The bit at the start
Hello all, as it has been for the last few weeks I've not been doing much music related stuff in the past 7 days as there's still a World Cup on and I think a 4 week hiatus from devoting most of my free time attention to music once every 4 years is pretty useful.
I did allow myself one musical indulgence last week though and that was seeing Philip Glass in the National Concert Hall in Dublin last Tuesday. Glass played unaccompanied solo piano featuring material from his Etudes, the Metamorphosis pieces, "Mad Rush" and some other things. The only change to that format was when the taped and disembodied voice of the late Alan Ginsberg joined Glass for "Wichita Vortex Sutra". It really was a brilliant night's music, everything played was enjoyable but there's really one thing that stood out as being particularly engaging and moving …

Afghan Whigs – Gentlemen
The best "fuck you bitch" record of the 90's.
You news, you lose
Nine times out of ten, it's an electric razor. One out of ten, it's a dildo. Sometimes it's even a *man*. It's airline policy not to imply ownership in the event of a dildo. We gotta use the indefinite article: "*A* dildo". Never "*Your* dildo".
Immigration officials can be a little … let's say cautious, when it comes to dealing with suspicious looking individuals trying to cross a border. This is a truism that the frontmen of The National and The Eels discovered recently. According to Spinner Matt Berninger of The National caused the evacuation of Honolulu airport and was taken into federal custody for carrying something that looked like a bomb. The actual item in question turned out to be, well let's let Berninger explain it himself, "I had bought a novelty clock in Tokyo, some sort of MacGyver, goofball alarm clock that happened to look exactly like a bomb. And it was in my suitcase....I had the Honolulu airport evacuated for about 45 minutes. I ultimately had to surrender the alarm clock to the TSA but they were very pleasant and professional. They had done a great job and I thanked them and they let me go."
As for Mark Everett of The Eels, he was questioned by London Police because he matched the description of a "suspicious person," they were looking for. He was ultimately let go by the police but told the NME, "Not every guy with short hair and a long beard is a terrorist. Some of us just want to rock."
This by the way is Mark Oliver Everett,
, as far as I'm concerned he looks more like a sex offender than a terror suspect.
Kinda bullshit Arcade Fire news.
As you probably know by now I've got nothing but love for Arcade Fire but it was announced last week that forthcoming new album The Suburbs will be released with 8 different album covers and that just rubs me the wrong way completely as it takes advantage of their hardcore completest chump fanbase.
Anyway, the album is out in the first week of August. But you probably knew that already.
Why are Lightbody's side projects always better than his main band?
Snow Patrol are pretty dreadful yet Reindeer Section, the band featuring some of that outfit's members was rather good. Well that pattern might just be followed by Tired Pony, a new "supergroup" featuring Gary Lightbody, Peter Buck of R.E.M. and Richard Colburn of Belle And Sebastian. On top of that debut album The Place We Ran From will contain guest spots by M. Ward, Tom Smith of Editors and Zooey Deschanel. You can listen to the song with Deschanel here.
The album will be out in the UK on Fiction on July 12th and on Mom + Pop on September 28th in North America.

Wavve for the camera.
Fat Possum were due to release the new Wavves album King Of The Beach on August 3rd however due to it's recent leaking on the internet the release has been pushed forwards somewhat.
It'll now be out on July 1st on iTunes (boo) and on the 13th on all other digital stores (meh) and physically the street date is that same as it ever was.
