Dancing About Architecture Indie Music News 7.27.10

The bit at the start

Good Tuesday to you all. The new Arcade Fire album, The Suburbs leaked last week and my initial impressions of it are really positive. It's a much better record than I thought it was going to be based on the dodgy rips of the tunes from it that have been floating around on the web for the last few months and it's a much, much better record than Neon Bible. Not really as anthemic as you'd expect from Arcade Fire but it's a record that sees the band genuinely stretch themselves in terms of their sonic palette. Good show Win and the other score of band members.

"City With No Children" is a bit of a stinker though.

Beg, borrow, buy, steal or download this album.

Arcade Fire – The Suburbs

See above.

You news, you lose

My favourite story of the year.

Pigeons are horrible. Disgusting rat with wings motherfuckers. However last week in St. Louis a bunch of pigeons caused the early end of a King Of Leon gig at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre after only 3 songs. They managed this glorious feat by shitting all over the band.

As per the Riverfront Times after the incident the band's drummer Nathan Followill Tweeted, "So sorry St. Louis. We had to bail, pigeons shitting in [bassist] Jared [Followill]'s mouth. Too unsanitary to continue....Don't take it out on Jared, it's the fucking venue's fault. You may enjoy being shit on but we don't. Sorry for all who traveled many miles."

The paper went on to late elaborate on the details with a statement from the band:

An infestation of pigeons living in the rafters of the Verizon Amphitheatre in St. Louis, MO, forced the Kings of Leon to walk offstage after three songs last night. Even though opening bands The Postelles and The Stills came offstage complaining of getting riddled with large amounts of pigeon excrement, the Kings of Leon decided to carry on regardless. The band felt it would be unfair to the fans to cancel the show at that late moment.

"I'm surprised they stayed on for as many songs as they did," said Andy Mendelsohn of Vector Management. "Jared was hit several times during the first two songs. On the third song, when he was hit in the cheek and some of it landed near his mouth, they couldn't deal any longer. It's not only disgusting -- it's a toxic health hazard. They really tried to hang in there. We want to apologize to our fans in St. Louis and will come back as soon as we can."

When the band arrived earlier in the day, the venue warned management that there had been a significant pigeon infestation problem with summer shows over the years, but they were doing all they could to fix it.

"We couldn't believe what The Postelles and The Stills looked like after their sets," said Jared Followill. "We didn't want to cancel the show, so we went for it. We tried to play. It was ridiculous."

Yeah, it's nasty and all, but I'm sure it was just as bad for the support bands. Pigeons, I love you.

New music from Les Savy Fav.

Les Savy Fav's new record Root For Ruin will be out on the band's bassist Syd Butler's Frenchkiss label on September 14th, or a day before on Wichita if you live in the UK.

However in exchange for an e-mail address you can download lead single "Let's Get Out Of Here" now.

New Grinderman music.

Grinderman 2 is out on September 13th on Mute in the UK and the following day in the US on Anti.

A week before that "Heathen Child" will be released on limited edition coloured 12"`, but of you want you can listen to it below.

Heathen Child by MuteRecords

Not good, not good at all.

Wasn't really sure where to put this story, it's be far the most important thing I'm writing about this week but if I lead with it then things like birds shitting on terrible bands would look even more puerile and pointless. So I decided to get that out of the way and separate the silly story from tragic one as much as I can.

In Germany on Saturday 20 people were killed and 511 were injured at the Love Parade Festival near Duisberg. The deaths took place in the wide tunnel that served as an entrance to the festival when, according to reports the crowds panicked and stampeded when police attempted to close off the tunnel when the festival became overcrowded (it's been reported that 1.4 million people were there).

Emergency workers had difficulty in reaching the injured as the crowd had spilled out into the route set aside for them. The festival continued on after the tragedy with many of the revellers unaware of what had happened. This was done with police backing so as to prevent further panic. The organisers of the festival, which has been running almost annually since 1989, have since announced that the festival will not take place again.

The bit at the end

I saw So Cow last Saturday night, fresh off a month long US tour it's probably the best I've ever seen him/them. Brian Kelly is a fucking brilliant pop songwriter.

You can follow me on twitter, I'm endlessly fascinating.
