411 Music Fact or Fiction 09.02.10: Trash Talk & Legends
Posted by Mitch Michaels on 09.02.2010
Who’s side are we taking in the Rihanna / Taylor Momsen feud? Is Johnny Cash music’s greatest legend? Will Drake release a new album this year? Are we excited for a new blink-182 album? 411's Alistair McGeorge and Todd Vote debate these questions and more in the latest 411 Music Fact or Fiction!
What's up? Welcome to another week of the hottest Thursday column on the ‘net - 411 Music Fact or Fiction. I'm Mitch Michaels and I keep up with the news.
This week, it‘s the overlord of 411 Games Top 5 Todd Vote taking on the keeper of Album A Day, Alistair McGeorge.
I love Johnny Cash, but to call him the biggest legend in music is selling the history of music short. I get it that Johnny is at the top of Saving Abel's list, but as we all know here at 411, lists are subjective. I think that the boys in Saving Abel might have mislabeled the list. It seems more like a top 10 list of their influences more than legends of music. Is Johnny Cash a Legend? Absolutely! Is the THE legend when it comes to music? I am inclined to say no, but he's right up there.
Alistair McGeorge: FICTION.
I'd say he's definitely ONE of music's biggest legends of all time, but not THE biggest. Saving Abel's list including bands as well as individuals, so there's no way The Beatles and Queen should be excluded from this. If I had to pick a legend to name number one, it'd be Freddie Mercury all the way. A virtuosic pianist, a vocalist with an awe-inspiring range, and one of the greatest songwriters of all time, Freddie's amongst the best. I know Cash is hugely significant and influential, but I feel he doesn't match a few of music's legends.
I'm of the mind that any person who has to talk about how "rock" they are, isn't really that rock at all. Plus her argument that Rihanna is trying to pass as a rock star simply because she wears a leather coat is completely preposterous. How exactly does a leather coat mean you are a rock star? I'm no fan of Rihanna, aside from the new Eminem video, but Momsen is way off base here, and I can't offer my support to someone who is out there trying to be the Lady GaGa of rock by saying as much shocking shit as she can.
Alistair McGeorge: FICTION.
I've actually heard of Rihanna for a start. Plus, from reading the report, it sounds like Taylor Momsen started this whole "feud" by mouthing off on the internet. So, fair play to Rihanna for putting her in line.
Maybe not staged by Axl, but it is most definitely Vintage Axl - copyright Michael Cole. Axl has always been a diva, and anyone who tries to sign up GN'R to play a show while not expecting Axl to be Axl is living with rose tinted glasses.
Alistair McGeorge: FACT.
In that, I believe that Axl Rose deliberately turned up late, because it's what he does. And that he then deliberately caused a scene, then bitched and moaned about it...because it's what he does. The man is a media whore who's pissed away his legacy, and this past weekend cemented it. I saw a bit of his set live at Leeds, and from what I saw it was actually a great show. However, all this backstage drama is just ruining his career, continuing his decline. Soon, what little he had left of his legacy will be totally gone, and good riddance.
Fact, fact, 100 times FACT. I was kind of a moderate fan of blink-182 back in the day, although I was only thirteen when they split up seven years ago. My first introduction into rock music was from bands like blink-182, Green Day and Sum 41, so they'll always hold a place in my musical heart. Tracks like "What's My Age Again", "Dammit" and "Reckless Abandon" still hold up well. Their set at Leeds Festival was fantastic, too, although Tom DeLonge seemed a bit under the influence, making his vocals shoddy (even by his standards). That said, the band seem tight again, their heart seems to be in it (they appeared to genuinely love the Leeds show), so why not? It can't be any worse than Angels & Airwaves.
Todd Vote: FICTION.
I wouldn't say interested. I mean I'd give it a listen, while I am not a big fan of the group, I have no problem listening when a blink-182 song comes on the radio or whatever. It's not something I'm going to be running out to buy. Let's just put it that way.
I don't know a great deal about Drake, but I'll go out on a limb and guess "fiction" for this one. Whilst a quick turnover into a new album is doable (Plan B is planning the same thing this year), news of a mixtape may cause the album to be pushed back a bit to next year. So, it's possible, I'll just go with fiction as a guess more than anything.
Todd Vote: FACT.
He probably will. Though releasing two albums in a year is no easy task, and one would be justified in questioning the quality of an effort like this. I was worried when Eminem released Recovery so soon on the heels of Relapse, and he ended up delaying Recovery. So while I think we may see something from him, the quality is going to have to be the big question mark.
Without a doubt. I named it #1 back when 411mania ran a "Top 5 Beatles' Songs" list. Here's what I wrote:
I remember hearing that this song was never performed live by The Beatles, both as a group or solo. Imagine the music fan in me when, at a stadium gig on June 1, 2008, Paul McCartney launches into it. It was a beautiful live experience, and it is arguably one of the most influential songs of all time. The lyrics, the melody, the instrumental parts...everything fits. The middle section, sung by McCartney, shows one perfect example of the pair's collaboration; what was originally a short piano piece Sir Paul couldn't find any use for became a great bridge to one of the greatest songs of all time. When I heard about this list, there was no doubt this would be my number one.
Todd Vote: FICTION.
My favorite Beatles songs are "Yesterday" and "Live and Let Die", and it may have something to do with liking both the original versions, and the GN'R remakes. Having said that I am fully prepared for the wrath of the readers for my choices.
Score Card: 2 for 6
Anything you agree with? Disagree with? Sound off in the comment section.
Im ok with either A Day In The Life or Yesterday, but Live and Let Die was technically The Wings. I know its close, but really if you're talking the Best Beatles songs I'd say you should stick to Beatles songs themselves

Todd, you voided your opinion when you said that Live and Let Die was a Beatles song.

Tomorrow never knows
I want you (she's so heavy)
In my life
Daytripper
Strawberry Fields Forever
I am the walrus
Within you, Without you
While my Guitar Gently weeps
Those songs are just as good as A Day in the Life for me, a truly timeless band that can't be pinned to just one song or album as their 'best'.

I guess these bands could be considered rock in the HMV rock, rap, or country way of categorizing things.

Hey Nathan, It's Paul McCartney and Wings. Not "The Wings"

Frank Sinatra is music's greatest legend!
Live and Let die was the wings.
Like Aliaster I got into rock because of bands like Blink 182 and Sum 41. Rock's been in really rough shape recently and its good to see a band like blink 182 refreshing the genre a little.

I see a couple of people have already pointed out Live and Let Die isn't a Beatles song. But what about Yesterday being a song GnR covered? That's the part that had me scratching my head. Do you mean the completely different song "Yesterdays" (notice the letter S on the end of that title)? The Guns n Roses song by the name of Yesterdays is not a cover version of Yesterday by The Beatles. If you were kidding with that part, I guess I must've missed the gag.

Live and let die is not a Beatles song. And G n R sing a song called Yesterday but its a totally different song not a Beatles cover.

Let's not also forget
Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds
I am the Walrus
Blackbird
Revolution
Yellow Submarine
Hello, Goodbye
Across the Universe
and about 50 others
The closest you can come to choosing 'the best' song is possibly to choose one song best representing each phase of their career. Seriously, how can you compare "I wanna hold your hand" to "Strawberry Fields"? They are(were) artists who continuously evolved over an amazingly short 9 year (approximately) span recording together..and yes I know Im leaving out the earliest phases before Love Me Do was released

1. Fact - Mitch,
Can you stop giving 20-year-olds "of all time" questions? The fact that neither of these jabronis show Johnny Cash the proper reverence while faintly (or avidly) praising Blink-182 is a disgusting affront to music.
Johnny Cash is THE biggest legend in music - no other artist/group has influenced so many people IN SO MANY DIFFERENT GENRES - not the Beatles, not the Stones, and especially not Freddie fucking Mercury. Cash has influenced everyone from hip-hop artists to rockers to folk/gospel singers to (obviously) country artists. His voice is one of the most recognizable of all time, he was a tremendous songwriter, he's got more quality songs on one album than many artists will have in their entire career, he managed to do war protest songs without condemning the people who were risking their lives to defend our country (something today's preachy turds fail to do more often than not) - the man could do it all, and Saving Abel actually got that one right.
2. Fact - I can't stand Rihanna, so Momsen wins by default.
3. Fiction - As was mentioned, it was Axl being Axl. You'd think promoters would be prepared for that by now - he's only been doing it for 20+ years now.
4. Fiction - It's not something I'm chomping at the bit to buy, but I agree with Vote that I won't switch the station if it comes on the radio.
5. Fact - These guys are too young to remember when DMX did it with his debut album It's Dark and Hell is Hot(May 1998) and the follow-up, Flesh of my Flesh, Blood of my Blood (December 1998) - while neither of those albums have held up particularly well (at least not for me), they were both QUALITY albums at the time. What people fail to realize is that rappers tend to generate a lot of material every time they enter the studio, and while only a small portion of that sees release, that doesn't mean the rest of it is low-quality. Factor in that many thought "Thank Me Later" was never coming out, and Drake's had PLENTY of time to create enough material for another quality album.
6. Fiction - I've always been a sucker for "Hey Jude".

crap. i feel sorry for the younger generation whose introduction to rock was bands like blink 182 and sum 41. i'm 29. my introduction to rock was the ramones, iggy pop, and the talking heads, but then again, i had a cool dad. i say purify yourself kids. listen to fugazi and learn why your music is utter garbage.

No sorry, trying to say 'Live and Let Die' is a Beatles song is a frigging Joke. I mean comon your writing something about one of the biggest bands of all time...you could have spent 5 seconds to do a google search if you needed to and could have found out it WASN'T a Beatles song (Paul McCartney and Wings for those wondering and it was only one of their biggest songs ever).
That is like saying 'Beat It' is a Jackson 5 song, I mean Michael wrote it right?
Or 'No More Tears' is a Black Sabbath song I mean Ozzie wrote it, so it must be related somehow right?

My fav Beatles song is easily Helter Skelter. Followes by Revolution. They have at least 30 songs that could be in a Top 10 list.
As for Taylor Momsen. I can not stand Rihanna now. Her latest album is terrible. Talor's band Pretty Reckless is awesome. She's the best new Female Rock Singer out now.

I meant more what I considering 'rock' at the time. Since then, I've got into the likes of Black Sabbath, Queen, Alkaline Trio, Metallica, Manic Street Preachers and a wealth of other, more "proper" rock bands. I do see your point, as they're more pop-punk than anything, just wanted to clarify.

My bad guys, I had my wires crossed. I apologize.

live and let die is a Wings song, not Beatles.

The Beatles are, were, and always will be, overrated.

Johnny Cash, music's greatest legend?
I don't think so, that would have to be Philip H. Anselmo.
Posted By: MBD (Guest) on September 02, 2010 at 02:03 PM
Ill address the issues one by one and in order.
1)If ANYONE could lay claim to "biggest legend in music", would have to be Elvis. NOONE, even Michael Jackson had a bigger effect than The King.
2)Two words for Rhianna AND the blonde stick figure....LADY FUCKING GAGA.
3) Who the fuck cares about a band that died over 15 years ago and a singer that hasnt done anything of value for even longer.
4)Blink's a good band so yeah I wouldnt mind a new album.
5) No clue who Drake is, couldnt give a shit.
6) Naming ANY song "the best" is a very suspect endeavour. Everyone has different feelings about songs depending on when, where and the circumstances of which you hear it. Personally, Yesterday is my favorite because my dad loved it so much and we played it at his funeral. In the end its like the abortion issue, its a PERSONAL choice.
Great column this week Mitch!

Have you ever heard of Elvis Presley? I mean you can go back to Muddy Waters and call him the greatest musical legend of all time if the only criteria is influencing other people.
American Blues influences all of Rock N Roll - From Elvis to the Stones to Led Zepplin. Not to mention the influence it had on Folk music and today's hip hip people.
So if that is the criteria Cash doesn't hold a candle to Muddy Waters...bu that criteria is pretty lame if you ask me. the "greatest" anything is always subjective and should account for the mark they had on the music scene. to me Elvis created (stole yes I know) rock N Roll how can you be more influential than that?
