Thoughts on The Electric Picnic, new music from Belle And Sebastian, and Panda Bear, a free Radiohead concert video, Flaming Lips to revisit the Soft Bulletin, play guitar with Pavement, Dirty Projectors reissues and more.
The bit at the start.
I hadn't been planning on going to this year's Electric Picnic festival that took place over the weekend. However in the middle of last week I received an e-mail from a friend of mine whose band was playing it offering me a guest ticket for the third day. Well didn't exactly have anything else to do on Sunday so off I went that morning and aside from an ostrich sighting (ostriches are uncommon in Laois) I can't say that there was much in the way of incident on the trip down.
As for the bands I saw, I don't plug my mates' bands here so they'll go nameless, which is a little shitty as I owe them a solid, they were good. I also caught The Horrors who were alright before two of my favourite bands took to the stage. I really love The National but I'm still struggling to find what I've loved so much in their last two records in High Violet but I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the new material during their set, tunes like "Bloodbuzz, Ohio" and "Terrible Love" were as good as I expected but it was something of a shock to be so thoroughly won over in the pouring rain and howling winds by "Conversation 16."
The last band of the night as far as I was concerned were Wolf Parade. Like The National before them I'm not crazy about their new record but unlike the Cincinnati 5-piece seeing the songs live didn't do much to improve matters. At the same time, they played "I'll believe in anything," you can't really go wrong with that.
Beg, borrow, buy, steal or download this album.

I wonder if anyone was so overlooked in his lifetime.
You news, you lose
New Music From Belle & Sebastian.
Write About Love is the forthcoming new album from Belle And Sebastian on October 11 in the UK and October 12 in the US. It'll be preceded with a single of the same name which is out digitally tomorrow.
However you can hear a couple of new songs in the video below. This 30 minute clip features a band Q&A with fans as well as them playing two new songs "I want the world to stop" and "I didn't see it coming."
I would love to win this.
Later this month Pavement will finally get around to playing the first reunion gigs they announced late last year in New York. The tour seems to have been generally quite rapturously received and I enjoyed the two gigs that I saw them play immensely.
On September 23rd the band will appear on "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon" and are offering one fan the opportunity to perform on TV with them. To enter you have to record a video of yourself covering one of the large number of Pavement songs listed here and submit it.
New Panda Bear single.
The latest in the line of Panda Bear singles to be released on a whole bunch of cool labels in the run up to the release of new album Tomboy is "You can count on me" b/w "Alsation Darn." It will be out on Domino on October 19th. The 7" release will be limited to 500 copies.
Oh, and here's the artwork …
Ohhhhh, interesting.
Radiohead played Prague's Výstaviště Holešovice Exhibition Hall on August 23, 2009 and during the gig 50 fans collaborated to shoot footage of the gig from the audience on their phones. That footage was then edited together to make a concert film Live in Praha and the whole project was then given endorsement from the band in the form of them supplying their own audio masters of the gig.
You can download the whole thing in DVD quality here, or watch it on YouTube. Here's a trailer for it:
I'd be more interested if it was a Transmissions From The Satellite Heart gig.
People who like it best are cloth eared buffoons but bless their wrong, WRONG, WRONG opinions The Soft Bulletin is generally the best regarded album by The Flaming Lips. As part of ATP's Don't Look Back series the band will headline a pretty incredible sounding gig at London's Alexandra Palace on July 1st next year when they'll play the whole thing in full. Supporting that night will be Dinosaur Jr. who will be performing 1988's Bug and Deerhoof who will play 2004's Milk Man in full.
Dirty Projectors reissue.
On September 28th Dirty Projectors will reissue an expanded edition of last year's Bitte Orca on Domino.
The 2 disc set will feature the original record on the first disc and the second will have live material from an acoustic session in Other Music in New York, previously vinyl only b-sides and a previously unreleased cover of Bob Dylan's "As I went out one morning".
