New music from R.E.M., The Flaming Lips to take a new approach to releasing tunes, Wavves/Best Coast split single, new Kurt Vile album, Atlas Sound xmas song and more.
The bit at the start.
Hey there kids, happy new year and all that rot, hope you had fun while I was away. For new years eve I caught Les Savy Fav in Dublin and while the crowd suffered from having an amazingly high proportion of fucking idiots in it the band, who played for about 2 hours, were sublimely good. I wonder this every time that I see them, if Tim Harrington were slim, and handsome and had hair could he get away with the shit that he does. I'm not so sure, if he were it'd just be sleazy, but as things stand it's sort of empowering.
Annnnyway, it's the first column of the new year and not all that much has been happening in the past fortnight so we'll just ease our way in, deal?
Beg, borrow, buy, steal or download this album.

You news, you lose
New R.E.M. music.
R.E.M.'s new album Collapse Into Now is out on March 7/8 (depending on territory) and the band have already made available a couple of tracks from it. First up is "Discoverer" which opens the record, you can find it on their website and on the NPR website you can stream "Oh My Heart."
They way they've been going it'll be 12 pieces of shit.
In a recent interview with Rolling Stone Flaming Lips main man Wayne Coyne said that the band hope to release a new song every month in 2011. In the interview he said that he's not currently into the idea of committing to making an album in a traditional manner saying, "Not that I think the old way was boring, but to spend another two years with the same 13 songs, it's just like fuck. I think we're going to just start to do things and put it out. Once we get 11 or 12 songs together, maybe we'll do something else with it. We want to try to live through our music as we create it instead of it being a collection of the last couple years of our lives."
As for the way that the songs will be released Coyne hinted that the band may have a bit of fun with that, "The dilemma is whether we're going to release it on vinyl, cereal boxes, or some of it on toys that we make. Sometimes, the music is the simplest part of any of these things. We'll be making these little videos that connect in the end to a bigger movie we'll be making next year as well."
Awwww.
Lo-fi indie's golden couple Best Coast and Wavves are setting off on a tour together later in the month but before that the duo will release a spit 7" on the Mexican Summer label. The single, like the tour is called "Summer Is Forever" and it will feature brand new material from both Wavves and Best Coast, the digital version of the release will feature older material as well as well as a track by tourmates No Joy.
