Dancing About Architecture Indie Music News 02.08.11
Posted by Ian Wright on 02.08.2011

The bit at the start.

Hello all, still fairly slow on the music front over here but on Friday I'll be seeing Dean Wareham playing Galaxie 500 material in Dublin and that should be pretty fucking great.

2 things I learned about Britta Phillips of Luna, Dean & Britta and most recently Dean Wareham plays Galaxie 500:

- Jesus fuck she's hot.
- She was Jem, out of Jem and the Holograms.

Beg, borrow, buy, steal or download this album.

Yuck – Yuck

A concise history of independent rock 1985-1993 but good shit.

You news, you lose

One final chance to dance yourself clean.

It's been coming for a while but it was announced last week that LCD Soundsystem will play their final show on Saturday, April 2nd at New York's Madidon Square Garden. The band certainly seem as though they're determined to go out big before they go home though saying on a statement on their website, "for just one more night, we will be playing with friends and family for nearly 3 hours–playing stuff we've never played before and going out with a bang."

General on sale tickets will be available from this Friday and the show will be opened by Liquid Liquid. For some reason the band has also requested that everyone in attendance wears black, white, or black and white.

I'm really jealous of anyone who gets to go to this. LCD Soundsystem didn't always make great records, in fact they only made one, Sound Of Silver, but they always made great songs. And they always kicked fucking ass when they got up on stage. Go if you can.

Exciting festival news for North Americans.

This year's Sasquatch festival takes place at The Gorge in Quincy, WA from May 27-30 and the lineup for it looks pretty great. Amongst the names announced are Modest Mouse, Guided by Voices, Wilco, the Flaming Lips (performing The Soft Bulletin plus other material), Death Cab For Cutie, Foo Fighters, Wolf Parade, Archers of Loaf, Flying Lotus, the Decemberists, Bright Eyes, Iron & Wine, Robyn, Yeasayer, Beach House, Deerhunter, Sleigh Bells, Major Lazer, !!!, the Thermals, Best Coast, Surfer Blood, Gayngs, Black Mountain, Smith Westerns, Das Racist, Twin Shadow, Ratatat, Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, Washed Out, Local Natives, Jenny & Johnny, CSS, the Drums, the Antlers, the Radio Dept., Black Mountain, Sharon Van Etten, and Gold Panda and the reunited Death From Above 1979

New Music from Dum Dum Girls.

Dum Dum Girls have a new EP coming out on Sup Pop on March 1st. You can download the opening track from it below if you want. Compared to debut record I will be it sounds fucking huge.

Exciting festival news for the Europeans.

Last week the final batch of names were announced for this year's Primavera Festival in Barcelona which takes place from May 25-29 (and I shall be there) and I'll be damned if it didn't lead to many people exclaiming "best … festival … ever" at the news. I'm just pleased that the problem I had with the lineup up till now, not enough people under 30 playing, has been fixed as well as adding some bona fide musical royalty to the bill.

Amongst the additions were Sufjan Stevens, PJ Harvey, Interpol, Big Boi, Girl Talk, of Montreal, Explosions in the Sky, James Blake, John Lydon's reunited Public Image Ltd., and industrial pioneers Einstürzende Neubauten.Odd Future, Battles, M. Ward, Matthew Dear, DJ Shadow, Lindstrøm, Jamie xx, the Tallest Man on Earth, Kurt Vile & the Violators, Glasser, Ty Segall, tUnE-yArDs, Avi Buffalo, Baths, Perfume Genius, Gold Panda, Warpaint, Cults, Gonjasufi, Glenn Branca Ensemble, the Soft Moon, the Black Angels, Holy Ghost!, Simian Mobile Disco, John Talabot, El Guincho, Darkstar, Ducktails, Kode9, Caspa, Cuzo + Damo Suzuki, Pere Ubu performing The Modern Dance, Carte Blanche (Riton and DJ Mehdi), Arto Lindsay, DM Stith, the Monochrome Set, Field Music, Annuals, and Suuns.

Those bands join the already announced Pulp, Animal Collective, Belle and Sebastian, the Flaming Lips, Fleet Foxes and the National.

New Dodos material.

This right here …

it's the opening track from The Dodos' new album No Color which is coming out on Frenchkiss on March 15. It's called "Black Night" and I like it better than anything on their second album.

TVOTR return.

It's been a while since TV On The Radio released the astonishing Dear Science and the band announced last week their new album Nine Types Of Light will be released in "the spring" on Interscope.

Also, if you live in New York the band are playing Radio City Music Hall on April 13.

New Low Tune

"Try to sleep" is the opening track to the forthcoming Low album C'mon.

If you want to hear it then just do the e-mail addy thing.

The YouTube video of the week

The bit at the end

In addition to Wareham I'll be seeing The Hold Steady on Thursday. I didn't really like Heaven Is Whenever but I'm looking forward to it. Did I ever tell you about the time that I played guitar with them? Probably.

You can have my job at 411 if you want it, contact Mitch Michaels to apply.

You can follow me on twitter, I'm endlessly fascinating.
