Hip Hop Herald 06.15.11: Royce & Method Man's New Albums, Flo Rida Arrested For DUI, Watch The Throne, More
Posted by Bill Wannop on 06.15.2011

Welcome one and all to the Hip Hop Herald. The column will deal with anything related to hip hop whether it be underground, mainstream, or the new-age pop infused rap (you know the stuff Timberlake and Timbaland make). We will cover news, opinions, release dates as well as feature some music and of course videos.

Music Intro
The music intro today comes courtesy of Nas, with the release of the first single off his new album, Life is Good. The song is called "Nasty" and brings back that old Nas flavor we have been missing in recent years!

Royce 5'9 Talks New Album

In promotion for the recently released album Hell: The Sequel with Eminem, Royce 5'9 recently spoke about his upcoming solo album as well as working with DJ Premier.

"He only did that one, but he's currently working on the single to the album called ‘Writer's Block.' He's working on remixing that right now," he said, turning the conversation towards Marshall working with Preem. "Yeah, everybody's saying that, man. Everybody's saying that. The crazy thing is, he's not opposed to that at all. He's a huge Preem fan."

Touching on his final independent solo release Success is Certain (July 26th), the Detroit, Michigan rapper explained that it's connected with his 2004 release Death is Certain, but not a sequel.

"It's kind of like a spinoff of it. When I look back in retrospect, where I was at in my life at the time, it was a dark period in my life. Where I am now, it's the exact opposite of where I was then. So it'll have the same dark feel to it, but it'll speak on triumph, overcoming adversity, the things I went through in the past. The content will be brighter, but it'll still have that dark feel."

After his solo album wraps up, he's teaming with his Slaughterhouse members to lay down their Shady Records debut. "We got a lot of records done, and that's actually about to be my complete focus, the Slaughterhouse album. Mine and Em's. We gon' get this project out and see what it does and shift gears pretty fast," he said. "We definitely want to get it out this year, sometime towards the end of the year. That's definitely the goal. We don't have a date yet, but we did the first album in six days, so it's not really a long process. It's not something that's going to take too much longer than it already has. Everybody's wrapping up their prior obligations and getting them out of the way so we can focus."

Royce is surely making the most out of the increased exposure he is getting thanks to Eminem, and is timing his projects accordingly. After his hype reaches its peak with the album with Eminem he plans to release his new solo, and follow that with the new Slaughterhouse. Let's hope that delays don't get in the way and these albums come out when they are supposed to.

Method Man Talks on Next Album

Method Man

Method Man is working on his upcoming solo album Crystal Meth, but says that it's going to take some time to cook up. Speaking with The Hip Hop Chronicle UK, the Wu-Tang Clan swordsman said fans will have to wait to get a better product.

"Still working. I'm taking my time," he said. "Fuck that, I don't care what nobody say or think. I'm taking my time with this one, and it's gonna be like a fine wine, baby."

He describes the album as a harkening back to his 1994 debut Tical and its 1998 sequel Tical 2000: Judgement Day. "Falling back to the first album and the second album, the darker element of Meth, but with a twist on it," he continued. "I can't exactly tell you exactly what it is because I don't want people biting me before I do it."

The "twist" has something to do with his writing technique, which he claims no one has done before. "It definitely has a twist to it. I have a new technique of writing that no one has really touched on but it's right there for them to pick up."

Method Man always had some great skills on the mic, however in recent years he has somewhat fallen off. His last couple albums have not been that great, but I am always pumped to hear some new Method Man. Let's hope that Method Man can get back to his early years when he was one of the most talked about artists coming out of the Wu-Tang Clan.

Frank Ocean Working with Jay-Z, Kanye West

Frank Ocean

Odd Future continues to make waves, with the R&B singer-songwriter Frank Ocean revealing that he will collaborate with Jay-Z and Kanye West, though it is currently unclear if the result will find placement on Watch the Throne.

In a post on his Tumblr page, the "Novacane" singer answered a question from a fan asking him to address himself five years ago. At the end of his response, he revealed his work with the duo. "[I] don't wanna spoil too much for you, but.. you're on a plane right now to the east coast to work with kanye west & jay-z. it's all working out kid. you made it."

Ocean has put in studio time with several big names over the past few months. In addition to working with Bey, he's put in studio time with Nas and Pharrell Williams.

I am somewhat with odds regarding Odd Future as they seemed to have somehow gotten he approval of many of the big names in hip hop. I really don't think they are anything special but everyone from Eminem, to Method Man, Jay-Z, and Kanye West seem to be endorsing them.

Flo Rida Arrested For DUI

Flo Rida

Pop rapper Flo Rida was arrested earlier this morning for driving while intoxicated in Miami Beach. The "Low" hit maker was allegedly driving around in a red-and-black Bugatti, estimated around $1.7 million, when police pulled him over for swerving in his lane.

Cops smelled alcohol during the stop and gave Flo, whose real name is Tramar Dillard, a "walk the line" sobriety test. Upon attempting the test, he replied, "Officer I can't do this. I don't feel I can't walk a straight line. I had a few drinks. Let's try another test."

After he failed, police arrested him on DUI and took him to a station around 3:30 A.M. where he is currently being booked. Flo's blood alcohol level was supposedly at .185, more than double the legal limit.

It is insane to me how these huge money makers in the entertainment world can get DUI's. I mean they most likely have a huge posse with them so finding a DD should be simple. Hell they could pay for someone in their posse to serve that sole purpose. Not to mention just taking a cab (or limo) to and from these events to completely avoid the entire situation.
