Welcome one and all to the Hip Hop Herald. The column will deal with anything related to hip hop whether it be underground, mainstream, or the new-age pop infused rap (you know the stuff Timberlake and Timbaland make). We will cover news, opinions, release dates as well as feature some music and of course videos.
Be for we start, be sure to check out some of our exclusive interviews as well as follow me on Twitter.
Music Intro
This week's music intro comes from Wiz Khlifa and Snoop Dogg, with the first single off the soundtrack to their movie, Mac + Devin Go To High School. Is a great collaboration between the two and I hope that their album that drops on December 13, is more of the same laid back sound.
Nicki Minaj Wins Big At 2011 AMA Awards, Plans Next Album
Nicki minaj was the biggest winner at the 2011 American Music Awards this weekend, basically cleaning up in the hip hop categories. The Young Money rapstress, who opened the show with a performance of "Turn Me On" and "Super Bass" alongside David Guetta, swept in the Favorite Rap/Hip Hop Album category, beating Jay-Z and Kanye West's Watch the Throne and Lil Wayne's Tha Carter IV. She also picked up top honors in Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop Artist, triumphing over 'Ye and Weezy.
After the event, Cash Money Records CEO Birdman announced that her sophomore album will likely be released in the first few months of 2012 as she is hard at work back in the studio.
"Nicki's back in the studio, so we're looking to drop Nicki in the first quarter," said Baby, stating that a single could be out by the end of the year. "Maybe this year? I don't know. [...] We're really thinking it out. But she's in the studio, and we're looking real soon, because she's ready to go and we're ready to go with her."
Nicki has had a great year, so I think that there is no need for her to hurry with her next release. She still has singles off her debut album in the top 50 singles charts as well as collaborations with Big Sean and Rick Ross. I know that they want to strike while the iron is hot, but I would continue to ride the wave from her first release before rushing her second album.
Kool G Rap Hard At Work On Two New Projects
One of the innovators and pioneers of hip hop is hard at work at two new projects for 2012. While he has already announced the collab album with Necro titled The God fathers, Kool G Rap recently announced that he and Alchemist are working on a full length album as well. Alchemist worked with G Rap on his latest release, Riches, Royalty & respect , which is one of the best albums of the year.
It is good to see that Kool G Rap is still staying active and is getting some of the respect he deserves. He was one of the greatest lyricists of all time and really should be given props from a majority of current stars. It is great that this new project with Alchemist will likely open him up to a new generation of fans.
Ludacris vs. Drake
Last week Ludacris dropped his latest mixtape, 1.21 Gigawatts where he released all new material including a song, "Badaboom" which takes aim at both Drake and Big Sean, in a response to Drake accussing Ludacris of stealing their Supa Dupa' flow (denoted by one-word punch lines at the end of sentences). In the song Luda rapped,
"Counterfeit rappers say I'm stealing they flows / But I can't steal what you never made up, bitch! / Y'all some duplicate rap cloning niggas / I manufacture you hoes put on your makeup, bitch!" he raps. "Let me explain, nothing's been new since Big Daddy Kane / Flows been recycled passed around to different names.
"Eleven years and still counting / And y'all get a couple of hit records, make some noise and have the nerve to start shouting?" he continues. "You lyin' to yaself, just admit it / May not like the way I used it, but you know you ain't invent it, boy / Do your research before you make a claim so bogus that's disrespecting pioneers in the game."
Drake has yet to respond to Luda's comments, but it is safe to say that I have to side with Luda on this and Drake is full of it. Luda (and other rappers, who Luda provides examples of on the intro of the track), have been using that flow for many, many years before both Drake and Big Sean. Drake and Big Sean may have made the flow much more popular, but that is completely different then taking credit for inventing or claiming that it was an original invented flow.
For Drake it would be wise for him to not even respond to the beef. He just released his latest album, and is likely to sell close to 500,000 copies in its first week of release. Just avoiding the situation is in his best interested, as Ludacris would likely destroy him lyrically.
Tyler The Creator Working On Next Album Is He Selling Out?
Spin Magazine recently caught up with Tyler, the Creator and his Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All partners after filming of the collective's impending Adult Swim series "Loiter Squad" wrapped. During the interview, Spin got the skinny on Tyler's second commercial effort Wolf and what fans can expect from the California rapper/producer's next project.
According to the Golf Wang head honcho, Wolf is slated for a May 2012 release via Odd Future's Sony RED-distributed imprint. In a departure from his previous work, however, Tyler says that fans can expect less talk about rape and murder in his lyrics. He's says that now that OFWGKTA's blown up on such a major scale, he's less interested in the macabre topics he rapped about on Bastard and this past year's Goblin.
"Talking about rape and cutting bodies up, it just doesn't interest me anymore," he said. "What interests me is making weird hippie music for people to get high to. With Wolf, I'll brag a little bit more, talk about money and buying shit. But not like any other rapper, I'll be a smart-ass about it. Now it's just girls throwing themselves at me and shit, but I got a girl back home. People who want the first album again, I can't do that. I was 18, broke as fuck. On my third album, I have money and I'm hanging out with my idols. I can't rap about the same shit."
If Tyler is indeed serious (he has been known to try and play' interviewers in the past, then he will lose everything that he has going for him. In lessens he will be selling out and be just like every other rapper out there. Whether you like him or you hate him, Tyler is a gimmick rapper. He is horrorcore, a style made famous by Brotha Lynch Hung, Esham The UnHoly, The Gravdiggaz (who also were much better artists in my opinion). Tyler used shock value to get popular and his violent lyrics mixed with his unique voice is what has made him popular today. If you take away his shock content, then he is just a mediocre rapper, rapping about money with a creepy voice. The mainstream will no longer think he is relevant as well his hardcore fans, the ones who got him where he is today, will feel he is selling out and thus will leave him as well.
A couple updates on the release front, as first T.I. has revealed the title to his upcoming album, Trouble Man. The album is rumored to be released in February and the first official single should be released as early as next week.
Rick Ross revealed that due to his recent health issues that he would be postponing the release of his upcoming album God Forgives, I Don't moving the date back from December 13, to the first quarter of 2012. Mainly the reason for the delay is the fact that Ross could not perform the proper media presence needed for the album to be as big of a success as he thinks it can be.
Crooked I has announced the digital release of his In None We Trust - The Prelude EP, dropping on December 13th via Treacherous Records/COB Music Group/EMPIRE Distribution.
As well Chino XL has given a 100% for sure release date for his often delayed album RICANstruction. The new date sees the album release on December 8 through itunes (which is a Thursday), with no information on availability of a hard copy. Throughout his career Chino has had issues releasing material and this album is no different. We will see if this new date actually holds and if we actually get to hear the album which features tracks with Tech N9ne, Bun B, and Big Pun.

Music Outro
The music outro comes from the new single from Busta Rhymes which features Chris Brown. Busta is readying the release of his new album after singing to Cash Money Records. Although no release date has been set, it is safe to say that Busta has had a rejuvenation in the past year regarding his music.
"The mainstream will no longer think he is relevant as well his hardcore fans, the ones who got him where he is today, will feel he is selling out and thus will leave him as well."
You don't follow Odd Futures fans very closely, they would wade through s river of shit if Tyler was on the other side. The joke is always there, the fans will always find the joke.
