Hip Hop Herald 12.14.11: Watch The Throne Sequel, ROOTS Movie, Canibus Dissing For No Reason, More
Posted by Bill Wannop on 12.14.2011
News and thoughts J. Cole getting dissed by Canibus for being a fan, a possible Watch The Throne sequel, the ROOTS making their latest album into a movie, new album release dates and more!
Welcome one and all to the Hip Hop Herald. The column will deal with anything related to hip hop whether it be underground, mainstream, or the new-age pop infused rap (you know the stuff Timberlake and Timbaland make). We will cover news, opinions, release dates as well as feature some music and of course videos.
Be for we start, be sure to check out some of our exclusive interviews as well as follow me on Twitter.
After the release of their first ever concept album, unDun the ROOTS plans to turn the album into a movie or play. During an interview with Billboard.com, Black Thought stated:
"It's definitely a set-up for there to be something cinematic or theatrical," he said. "It could be a play or a full-length feature or a short or an iPad app that's more involved than the one that accompanies this record. The idea that those possibilities exist are why we approached (undun) that way; we want there to be an option for the music to be able to live on if we choose to take it there."
The story reverses the death of its protagonist, who spent his life hustling and searching for unanswered questions about existence. Though the potential is there for a visual representation, The Roots has only discussed it in closed quarters.
"It's been discussed amongst ourselves," he said, "but no one has approached us to say, 'Why don't you do this to further develop this character?' But the backstory that's told and the whole mockumentary thing set it up to be a possibility."
This would be interesting and I can see them putting this together. The ROOTS are one of the most diverse and artistic groups out there right now, so you can bet they would come up with something both entertaining and original. For those that have not listened to the latest album go pick it up now!
Canibus Disses J.Cole, Then Changes Mind
Canibus seems determined to continue his downward spiral, this time taking aim at J.Cole. Canibus recently released a diss song title "J Clone" where he disses Cole simply because J. Cole said that early Canibus material was an influence for Cole's young career. So Canibus is now dissing people who give him props? Canibus also released a statement explaining the diss, basically saying how Cole should be listening to his new material and get him on a track if he was a big influence in his career.
If the diss was not strange enough Canibus then retracted the diss song and statement, releasing a video apologizing for the disses.
"I've seen thousands and thousands of comments of ['J. Cole'], and all the negativity it's stirring up. After 48 hours of it, I feel confident enough to say that it's unanimous. Hip Hop has spoken up loud and clear, it's a 'cole world' right now, and you're reignin' champ, J. I take full responsibility for my actions and I apologize for steppin' over the line. It comes off as tacky, unsophisticated, and it's just not G. I love Hip Hop too much to further justify my selfish behavior."
It is quite evident that Canibus will never be relevant again, not even from a paying homage type of way. While Canibus has a ton of lyrical talent and no doubt influenced a lot of artists with his early work, he has continually shot himself in the foot and is constantly involved in beefs. This year alone Canibus has started issues with DJ Premier, Slaughterhouse and now J. Cole, again for no real reason. While Canibus has talent lyrically he has always been plagued with very poor production. I don't see that changing anytime soon
Watch The Throne sequel In The Works
With the recent success of the Jay-Z/Kanye West collab album Watch The Throne, fans may get their wish and the two may release a sequel in 2012. Speaking with MTV Jay-Z stated:
"It depends on how this thing finishes up," he said. "We I say we' because I'm in Throne mode we're in a great place creatively. You might see a Jay, then Kanye and a Throne album next year. You know, we're really in a great place creatively. We really found our zone."
This is good news for fans of Jay-Z and Kanye West as the two men managed to release a good album together and likely the sequel will be even better now that they know what each other is capable of on a full record. While no promises were made it seems like a lock that another Watch The Throne album will see the light of day, I am just not so sure that it will be in 2012.
DPG
A bunch of new album news has started to develop for 2012, the first of which is that the latest Dogg pound album will have executive production from Dr. Dre. The crew along with Snoop Dogg were all back together in the studio working on the latest album, Alumni
"It's Daz and Kurupt getting that DPGC together. Big Snoop is overseeing it, Dre's overseeing," said Kurupt in an interview with AllHipHop.com.
"We just got off a road trip for beats with Dr. Dre, who is still working on Detox."
Said Daz of the project: "We put the beats together, submit it to him [Dr. Dre] to let him know what we are working with and he comes and adds his flavor to it. It's natural."
This is great news for DPG fans as the group has been dropping solid releases for years now and adding Dr. Dre can only help to make things better.

What I Am Listening To
Had a chance to check out both the new Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa album as well as the Naughty By Nature album, Anthem Inc. I must admit that both albums are very good in my opinion. Snoop and Wiz have great chemistry and added with the non-serious nature of the album really make it a laid back enjoyable cd, while Naughty By Nature show that although many years have passed since they have released an album that they are still a force to be reckoned with. The group shows on the album that they still have the lyrical ability to hang with anyone, and add to that some quality production and you have a pretty good anniversary album.
That does it for another Hip Hop Herald. This will likely be my last column until the New Year, so everyone have a Merry Christmas
that canibus track is complete trash! not just what he says, but the beat and the features too!

Canibus what happened? Talk about wasted potential. I liked a couple of albums and lyrically he is creative. He just seems like a bitter old man, he never got the fame he wanted. He will never be relevant again.

I'm all for a 'Watch the Throne' sequel. I missed the tour, and I regret not going to it every time I listen to the album.

Watch The Throne was so mediocre from a production standpoint (outside of 3 tracks) it's not even funny. Unless the beats actually sound like rap/hip hop and not electro-fusion techno, WTT2 will be another mediocre affair.
Ditto on the Canibus track. The beat was garbage, and Canibus really didn't even say anything. It's a shame, Canibus is actually an amazing lyricist, sucks he never got the shine he could (due to himself and labels). Oh well, just listen to Rip The Jacker, Melatonin Magik, and From Whom The Beat Tolls and enjoy some nice Canibus albums.
