411 Music Fact or Fiction 08.31.12: Justin Bieber Gets Jaundice
Posted by Joseph Lee on 08.31.2012
Do we like Usher's new music video? Is it surprising that Britney Spears has a personality disorder? Are we excited for new Kings of Leon music? 411's Joseph Lee and Robert Cooper debate these topics and more in this week's 411 Fact or Fiction: Music!
Welcome to another edition of Fact or Fiction: Music. I'm your host, Joseph Lee.
This week we have Robert Cooper taking on me...because I sent the questions to the wrong person and have to do them myself now. At least I admit my mistakes.
I hate to come in negatively, but after watching the music video to answer this very question, I can say that I see this video as almost the reverse of his video for "Burn". Because in that video, it ended with everything being on fire, and this video ended up with everything being in water. I think I've seen this video before, but at least the song that went with it was not half bad.
Joseph Lee: FACT.
Because of my own mistakes I have to answer another question about Usher, who I am not a fan of. On its own merits, the "Dive" video is really no different than most R&B videos of the type, plus there's a lot of shirtless Usher. Fine for the ladies and some of the dudes, not for me. The song is depressingly mediocre, which doesn't help.
When I hear Missy Elliot, I am not usually too fretful, but that doesn't mean I'm all that interested in hearing any new music, or much of anything from her. I do hope that what she does put out will be of quality, I just wont find out anything about until years after it comes out.
Joseph Lee: FACT.
I could take or leave Missy Elliot, but considering how awful the world of mainstream female hip-hop is these days with Nicki Minaj and um...that's about it, I welcome back Missy Elliot with open arms. And hey, "Get Your Freak On" was a good song.
I am not very big on Bon Iver, the band might be the biggest bunch of hipster drivel ever to be put on record. But until a time where I become acquainted better with Bon Iver, I will have to say that the worst hipster band ever is wrestledabearonce. These douchecanoes dress in a very douchey brand of metal hipster chic, with such masterpieces as "Karate Nipples" and "Next Visible Delicious".
Joseph Lee: FICTION.
First of al, congratulations on Robert Cooper introducing a new word into my vocabulary with "douchecanoe". Hipster rock is very low on my personal totem pole of rock sub-genres (the worst being emo rock...die in a fire My Chemical Romance), so I don't listen to much of it. However, after listening to their 2011 album, I'll call shenanigans on this blog for the fact that Bon Iver may be "hipster", but they're mostly just...boring. While in some cases boring can mean bad, in music something that makes you want to stab your ears is worse. Bon Iver's not that bad so they can't be the worst anything.
Kings of Leon is one of those bands that for the longest time I liked their songs but never caught their name. I really enjoyed "Use Somebody" and a few other songs. So I can say fact here, because I am excited for more material. Maybe not so excited that I'll rush out and buy the album on the day of release, but I'll at least stream it on Spotify.
Robert Cooper: FICTION.
Their music does not do very much for me. They are kind of run of the mill to me, so until a time comes when I hear a song by them and want to listen to it again, i will probably just turn it when the song comes on a second time.
And the winner for most obvious question goes to...me! It is easy to make jokes and say we knew this was coming, but given her incidents way back when and the rumored incidents after that, it really was easy to see coming, especially since it seems apparent that she doesn't do drugs (at least it's never been rumored, has it?). I wouldn't be surprised to hear that other celebrities with problems also have personality disorders. If Lindsay Lohan gets diagnosed tomorrow, I'd just say, "yup". At least Britney's getting her life together with that successful tour/album and new job.
Robert Cooper: FACT.
I'm not all too surprised at the fact that she has a personality disorder, I feel that it is very unfortunate, considering that she has quite a bit of stress on her shoulders can not be good. Her "Crazy" spell from about 2006 was probably a good indication of how well her mental faculties were running, and adding the information from then to what we know now, it makes everything make much more sense.
I'll never understand the hate this kid gets for making mediocre music (that you don't have to listen to), but that's a debate for another day. No, I have zero interest in seeing him on The Simpsons. Part of that is due to Bieber, who I'm not a fan of (but I don't think he's the anti-christ, either) and part of is due to the fact I haven't seen The Simpsons in a long time.
Robert Cooper: FACT.
I really have no interest in the Simpsons anymore, and would like for the show to just be put down, so people like the Beibs can go do other things, like go fishing. I also think the idea of Bill Cosby playing Bane in The Dark Knight Rises is a much more interesting idea.
Score Card: 5 for 6
