411 Music Buy or Sell 09.20.12: Don't Judge the Killing Types
Posted by Jeremy Thomas on 09.20.2012

Greetings and salutations, Music Zone readers! Welcome to your top choice in music single opinion columns, 411 Music Buy or Sell! I'm your host Jeremy Thomas, and each week we'll look at some of the hottest new and hit singles and a couple of our esteemed writers will decide if they want to keep the song (Buy) or drop it like it's hot (Sell). This week's listeners are a former member of the 5&1 Illuminati from the Music Zone, the one and only Adam Hill, a current member of the 5&1 in the MMA Zone's Stewart Lange!

All right, enough of the introductions and rules…let's hop to it!

1) Pink - "Are We All We Are"
From The Truth About Love (RCA)
Released September 6, 2012
Adam Hill: SELL.

It's Pink isn't it? That's about all you need to know. It's what she does well, and an awful lot of. It's got some shouty bits, it's got some catchy bits, it's very poppy and bombastic and no doubt there will be a lot of sneering and faux attitude in the video. It's perfectly fine as far as Pink songs go, but it is not "Fucking Perfect."

Stewart Lange: SELL.

I actually have never minded Pink but this doesn't really hold much water for me. It's pretty standard stuff and I'm just not sure she still has what she needs to be popular.

ANALYSIS: SELL

2) Stone Sour - "Absolute Zero"
From House of Gold & Bones - Part 1 (Roadrunner)
Released August 13, 2012
Adam Hill: SELL.

Confession time, it's been a long old time since I last listened to metal properly. As a young 'un at school I would sit in science class with my walkman on rocking out with some of the other kids, now? Not so much. Anyway, this is ok for what it is. Older me isn't as moved or excited by it as much as younger me no doubted would have been. If you'd have asked me coughcoughcough years ago, I would have bought it no question. Not today though.

Stewart Lange: BUY.

Now, this is the opposite. I actually don't like Stone Sour, despite being a long time Slipknot fan. This is pretty interesting and at 8 minutes long, it had to be good to hold my attention. It does. I still prefer Corey's vocals against a Slipknot track, but this is good enough.

ANALYSIS: SPLIT

3) Chris Brown - "Don't Judge Me"
From Fortune (RCA)
Released August 14, 2012
Adam Hill: SELL.

You know what? Fuck it. I actually started to listen to this and then I thought, why the fuck am I even bothering? Nothing Chris Brown has done musically has ever made me think, ‘hmmm, you know what? That's pretty good', I doubt very much this slow ass piece of balls was going to change that. The problem he also faces, you know what with him being an unrepentant convicted beater of women, is that putting out a song called "Please Don't Judge Me" just lends itself to people saying, ‘nope already have, fuck off'.

Stewart Lange: SELL.

I'm not listening to this asshole. Sorry Jeremy.

ANALYSIS: SELL

4) Amanda Palmer - "The Killing Type"
From Theatre Is Evil (8 Ft. Records)
Released September 6, 2012
Adam Hill: SELL.

It's not bad, catchy and spiky though a little too art school wank for my taste. Also, she got $1.2m for her album through Kickstarter and still expects musicians to play her shows for free, she don't need my money. Sell.

Stewart Lange: BUY.

This is great! I really enjoyed this and the video is great too. I had never even heard of her until this track so I'm pretty glad I took this on this week. Worth the find for me. It has a real gothic 80's feel to it at times, like Bauhaus or similar. Well worth a download.

ANALYSIS: SPLIT

5) The Wallflowers (ft. Mick Jones) - "Reboot The Mission"
From Glad All Over (Columbia)
Released July 24, 2012
Adam Hill: BUY.

If you'd asked me, I'm not sure I would have ever put Mick Jones and The Wallflowers together but listening to this, it makes perfect sense. The former Clash guitarist lends his vocals and strings to this very dubby, very Clash sounding track and the result is fantastic. Unquestionably the stand-out track of the week.

Stewart Lange: BUY.

I've actually heard this song around for a little while and it's pretty cool. I really don't think it's good enough to merit an album purchase, but as a stand alone track I quite like it. It'salmost too long, as it doesn't go anywhere, but a good track none the less.

ANALYSIS: SELL

6) Slightly Stoopid - "Top Of The World"
From Top of the World (Stoopid Records)
Released August 14, 2012
Adam Hill: BUY.

I like this, I didn't know what to expect but it's got a really good, laid back vibe going on. It reminds me of the short lived but brilliant UK band LSK that specialized in chilled out and soulful reggae sounds. I can totally see people getting high to this and mellowing the fuck out. Not literally of course, that would be weird as everyone else has gone to bed. It would mean I was hallucinating. Hmmm, think I might put this on a few more times, wind down and go to sleep.

Stewart Lange: BUY.

Yeah, I like this too. It's pretty unusual that I finish the Buy or Sell without coming across as a grumpy, music-hating ass, but I'm enjoying this track too. Well worth a listen, it's a good, chilled hip hop track that makes me think of A Tribe Called Quest when they were good.

ANALYSIS: BUY

So after a rough start, this week finishes out strong with both the Wallflowers and Slightly Stoopid picking up full-on Buys! Thanks to Adam and Stewart for their participation this week; that will do it us! What do you think of the singles we covered? Agree? Disagree? Let us know in the comments!
