411 Fact or Fiction Music 10.26.12: Check Out My Blue Steel
Posted by Joseph Lee on 10.26.2012

New 411 Music Fact or Fiction Banner

Welcome to another edition of Fact or Fiction: Music. I'm your host, Joseph Lee.

This week we have Jeremy Wilson against Mark Radulich.

Round 1
1) Any controversy over the Game's Jesus Piece album cover is overblown..
Mark Radulich: FACT.

Sure, I guess. I mean even saying there's a controversy here irks me. The Game isn't being arrested for "distributing harmful matter" like say Jello Biafra/HR Gieger and he's not having to testify before congress. I'm pretty certain this album cover is going mostly unnoticed by the Federal Government so the "controversy" lies mostly with the fans and the media. And what exactly is the headline here, "Rapper makes Jesus look like a Blood, some fans hate it…film at 11?" Yes, I would say any controversy is too much and overblown.

Jeremy Wilson: FACT.

I've never listened to Mr. Game in my life. However, I do know a little something about art. And the thing about artwork – in whatever form it may take – is that if it doesn't have something to say and isn't offending somebody somewhere, it's probably not doing it right. Religion is a ripe topic for art and the most known "offensive" forms of art – be they visual or written or performed – have almost invariably involved religion in some way, shape or form. It's visually compelling and thematically interesting and people are talking about it...which is exactly what he wanted.

Score Card: 1 for 1

Round 2
2) You're interested in watching Spike Lee's Michael Jackson documentary.
Mark Radulich: FICTION.

Nope, not even a little bit. Now I in no way mean for this to come off a criticism of others but I stopped being interested in Michael Jackson's music many years ago, probably around the same time as the first child molestation charges. Anything I wanted to know about Michael Jackson I've learned from accounts of his Jackson 5 days. Not to mention that pretty much since Bamboozled I haven't been interested in anything Spike Lee has done.

Jeremy Wilson: FICTION.

I'm really not. I've had my fill of Michael Jackson and honestly, I need at least a decade before I sit down and watch anything about him again. I feel like I answer a Michael Jackson question every time I do Fact or Fiction, which I find slightly amusing since he's been dead going on three and a half years. Jacko is dead. The music lives. That's good enough for now. I know everything I need to know about the man and I'm tired of all that Bubbles, Peter Pan, Lisa Marie, Joe Jackson, drug addict, child molesting stuff. I need space from it all.

Score Card: 2 for 2

Round 3
3) You enjoyed the music video for Nicki Minaj and Cassie's "The Boys".
Mark Radulich: FICTION.

I'm not sure what is supposed to be so great about it. This video seems like any other one from that genre of music. Other than the odd Tim Burton-esque color schemes, it's a hot girl being fawned after by men. Been there, seen it, next!
Jeremy Wilson: FICTION.

I would rather shove pencils in my eyes and ears. Ugh, Nicki Minaj...I don't get it. On a sidenote: the rise of auto-tune as a legitimate musical effect and stylistic device will go down as the worst thing to happen to music of this era. Way worse than piracy. Worse even then Justin Bieber.
Score Card: 3 for 3

SWITCH

Round 4
4) Lady Gaga would actually be a good fit for a Zoolander sequel.
Jeremy Wilson: FACT.

I don't care. Sure, why not. I'm kind of over Lady Gaga; I don't hate her (I liked her first album and The Edge of Glory) but I've grown weary of the "Gaga persona." I really just wish she focus more on the music and less on feeding all her little monsters all the time and being outlandish outside of the music, but since she's seemingly desperate to be this era's Madonna, that's probably not going to happen. I'm not a fan of Zoolander so the sequel can do anything it wants.

Mark Radulich: FACT.

I don't see why not. She's into weird fashion and seems to have the ability to laugh at herself so she'd probably do well in a comedy.

Score Card: 4 for 4

Round 5
5) Stone Sour's new album wasn't as good as past efforts.
Jeremy Wilson: FICTION.

I've only listened to this Stone Sour album, so I can't speak to past efforts. I liked it. Admittedly, metal isn't my go-to musical genre, so I don't have a huge base of comparison. I liked it though. It's getting pretty good notices and songs like "Absolute Zero," "RU486," "Tired" and "Taciturn" are all standouts for me. I'd definitely listen to it again and it's good enough to get me to anticipate House of Gold and Bones: Part 2 in 2013.

Mark Radulich: FACT.

Yes, this seems like a bit of a rehash. Nothing really stood out to me on it.
Score Card: 4 for 5

Round 6
6) Beyonce is a great choice for the Super Bowl half time show.
Jeremy Wilson: FACT.

Would she be my personal choice? No. Is she a fine consensus choice for football and non-football fans alike? Yeah. She's at least a little more of an up-to-date choice than some they've had in recent years...in that she's under the age of 55. I don't know many people who out-and-out hate Beyonce, so that helps too. I have no idea if her set will be any good, but as far as popular, quality pop acts go, it'll probably be fine. Then again, I actually do watch the Super Bowl for the football so I honestly don't really care who plays at halftime, because that's bathroom break time anyway.
Mark Radulich: FACT.

100 times fact! Finally they are getting an artist who can entertain multiple generations of football fans without alienating either the young or the old. Beyonce may not be my cup of tea but one cannot deny that she's very talented and obviously successful as a cross-over media star. I might even watch now that she's performing.

Score Card: 5 for 6
