News and thoughts on Justin Timberlake giving Kanye a jab on Saturday Night Live, 40 Glocc suing the Game, MTV revealing their Hottest MC's list, Dr. Dre starting a music streaming service and more!
Welcome one and all to the Hip Hop Herald. The column will deal with anything related to hip hop whether it be underground, mainstream, or the new-age pop infused rap (you know the stuff Timberlake and Timbaland make). We will cover news, opinions, release dates as well as feature some music and of course videos.
Be for we start, be sure to check out some of our exclusive interviews as well as follow me on Twitter.
This week's music intro comes from Justin Timberlake, who has his new album, The 20/20 Experience dropping on Tuesday. We commented last week on how Kanye West spoke about how he was not a fan of his first single, "Suit & Tie". Well it looks like JT issued a response in the way of a subtle jab while performing the track on SNL, changing the lyrics of the song from "got a hit and picked up a habit" to "got rappers acting dramatic." Check out the video below for the full performance:
This week appears to be the week of the lawsuit as first rapper 40 Glocc has officially issued his lawsuit against rapper Game over an assault that took place last July.
According to TMZ, Glocc sued the Compton, California rapper for a staggering $4.54 million. He is suing Game for: $500,000 in pain and suffering; $500,000 in emotional distress; $750,000 in lost earnings; $2 million for punitive damages; $25,000 in medical expenses; and various other reasons.
During the incident Game beat 40 Glocc outside of a mansion in Hollywood, where, according to Glocc, Game and 15 other men jumped him.
Well it is safe to say that 40 Glocc's gangsta rap career is officially over. While he was not at the top of anybody's favorite emcee list, Glocc likely weighed the options and decided that he would try to get a quick payout and likely lose his music career, then try to retaliate against Game. You cannot really blame 40 Glocc, if the incident did occur the way he says it did, and he really just wants to cash in…
The next lawsuit involves Lil Kim, who has filed a $1 million suit against a lawyer and businessman, claiming that she was convinced to sign a series of bad licensing agreements.
According to NYDN, Lil Kim sued Sunny Barkats and Andrew Ro for having her sign the agreements. She claims that Barkats tricked her into entering transactions that gave him and Ro a 44 percent stake in a corporation formed to license her brand names. After confronting him about the deals in December, Kim claims that Barkats refused to rescind them and called the suit a "frivolous" attempt for her to back out of the contracts.
I have to agree with Barkats here, in that in all likelihood Kim signed the agreement and at a later date realized that she no longer liked the terms of the agreement. For her to come out and say they tricked her into signing it is really not an excuse. If you are talking about someone's finances and their livelihood you should have multiple people examine any document you are signing.
MTV Hottest MC List
MTV has released their annual list of the hottest MC's and it has everyone up in arms yet again. Most of the rappers on the list were actually upset that they were not ranked number 1! In my opinion the majority of artists should have not even made a top 20 list, let alone being listed at number 1. Let go through the list to see who (if anyone) belongs:
1. Kendrick Lamar
2. 2 Chainz
3. Rick Ross
6. Big Sean
7. Kanye West
8. A$AP Rocky
10. Meek Mill
I actually think that MTV got #1 right. Kendrick was ripping it up all last year and he could arguably be #1 on anyone's list. However, from #2 down, the list goes to hell. How does 2 Chainz always get ranked so highly by the mainstream media? What has Rick Ross done in the past year? Nas is a worthy addition, but Drake? Really Drake? This just rubs further salt in the wounds of hip hop fans after Drake won rap album of the year with an R&B album…
I really think that MTV has completely lost all credibility with this list…
What do you guys think the top 10 should look like?
Dr. Dre Starting Music Streaming Service
Dr. Dre continues to expand his empire, this time he has secured $60 million in investments to start his own music streaming service, codenamed project Daisy. The project is set to launch in late 2013 and also boasts Jimmy Iovine and Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor as co-founders.
If anyone were to get a project like this off the ground, Dr. Dre & Jimmy Iovine would be the two to do it. It will be an interesting rest of the year to see how Daisy develops and if it can become the top music streaming site, much like Dre's Beats headphones conquered the headphone market.
Release Dates & Album Updates
Not much news regarding album updates, with only T.I. dropping some information regarding his upcoming album, Trouble Man: He Who Wears the Crown. T.I. dropped his newest single,
"Memories Back Then," featuring B.o.B and Kendrick Lamar, however the song was originally supposed to sample, Gotye's Grammy Award-winning "Somebody That I Used to Know," however T.I. was unable to clear the sample:
"We just remixed it and did our own thing to it. Took the sample out so we wouldn't have any trouble in our due diligence," he said in an interview with MTV News. "I didn't want to waste the opportunity because it was such great performances and such a meaningful message from myself, from Bob and from Kendrick," he explained."
"'Memories,' it began as a record that my DJ MLK, he brought a record to me that was produced by Keno and it had a sample, the sample of the biggest record last year and basically I just rocked out as soon as I heard it."
T.I. took a positive spin on the matter, regardless. "I think the record is just as hot, if not hotter without the sample," he said. "No disrespect to the people whose record we sampled. If we could've done it that way we would've loved to, but we didn't wanna step on no toes."
T.I. said in another interview that he is about 60-70% his new album, and that he only has to finish a couple more tracks:
"The record is 60 to 70 percent done already," he said. "I'ma do about five to six more records just to put the ribbon on top and we'll be ready to rock."
No date has been given for the release.
