Jam Central Station 04.06.13: Ultimate Summer Music Festival Extravaganza Pt. 1
Posted by Jeff Modzelewski on 04.06.2013

Hey everyone! Hope you're having a great weekend. With summer quickly approaching, it's time to dive into our annual Ultimate Summer Music Festival Extravaganza! It's a preview of some of the best festivals this summer has to offer. From the biggest to some up and coming gems, if you're a music lover, you need to be at at least a few of these fests. So sit back, relax, and check out what's coming up!

April 12-14
April 19-21
Empire Polo Club
Indio, CA

Coachella acts as the "official" start to the festival season pretty much every year. While there are smaller festivals that preceed Coachella, the festival in Indio is one of the biggest and one of the best. It sells out well in advance, it gets a great lineup every year, and they recently expanded to 2 weekends. This year is no exception. Coachella is arguably the #1 American festival, and they work every year to hold on to that spot.

Why You Should Go
If you're going then you don't need to hear anything from me. If you're not, then it doesn't matter what I say, because tickets are already gone. But, as I said, Coachella is a premier festival every year. Along with a great selection of music, the festival includes a huge variety of food options (and not your typical festival fare), arts and entertainment, and an unbeatable setup. They know how to throw a festival with a minimum of hassles.

What You Need To Know
Tickets are (almost) completely sold out. Your only way to go to the festival is with one of the high-priced group packages. If you already have tickets, remember that camping tickets are separate, and those are sold out. Basically, if you want to go, get your tickets before the lineup is announced. If you don't like the lineup, you'll have no problem getting rid of the tickets and getting your money back.

April 18-20
Spirit of the Suwanee Music Park
Live Oaks, FL

While Coachella is the first major festival, Wanee is the first big camping festival. The festival is once again being headlined by The Allman Brothers and Widespread Panic, and they're bringing a nice variety with them this year. Warren will be pulling double duty with both ABB and Gov't Mule. Tedeschi Trucks Band will be there. Franti, Robert Randolph, North Mississippi AllStars, and Galactic are just a few of the bigger jam names on the bill. Les Claypool's Duo de Twang will be making one of their rare appearances for this fest.

Why You Should Go
.If you're an ABB/Panic fan, this is a fest where they're both known to bring the goods. Beyond that you've got some pretty nice and diverse bands to check out. The location is spectacular as well. Camping in the woods, camping next to a river, Florida in April, what could be better?

What You Need To Know
Tickets are $205 and include camping. The music goes from Thursday to Saturday, so nothing on Sunday. The park itself offers horseback riding, canoeing, and a variety of other activities on site. The park is actually a year-round venue, so this is just one of many events that happens there.

May 17-19
Gulf Shores, AL

The only festival on the beach! Hangout enters their 4th year, and they've been expanding since the beginning. This year is no different, with Tom Petty, Stevie Wonder, and Kings of Leon all headlining. Seeing as both Stevie Wonder and Kings of Leon headlined Bonnaroo a couple of years ago and Petty is headlining this year, Hangout is certainly heading in a bigger direction. Trey Anasasio Band (who headlined the first Hangout) are on the bill as well, along with Bassnectar, The Black Crowes, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Steve Aoki, The Roots, Passion Pit, and many others. It's a mix of indie and jam bands, with a few other things sprinkled in.

Why You Should Go
A fest on a beach sounds pretty amazing, right? Jam out while wading in the Gulf. Hoop on the sand. Really there's nothing bad about that at all. Add a lineup with a class of A-1 headliners and an undercard that features the best of almost everything, and you've got Hangout. They're looking to become one of the premier city festivals, and this lineup definitely ups the ante for everyone else.

What You Need To Know
See how I said "city festival" back there? Yep, that means No Camping. Get a hotel folks. Travel packages that include condos are available, and you'd be surprised how many people you can fit into a condo. Also, late nights are separate (a downfall of a city fest), so be prepared to buy extra tickets for the late night festivities. General Admission is $229.

 photo summercamp.jpg
May 23-26
Three Sisters Park
Chillicothe, IL

The annual Umphrey's McGee/moe. festival is back once again! Both bands will perform 5 sets throughout the weekend. On top of that you get a full 2 set show from the trey Anastasio Band, STS9, The Avett Brothers, Thievery Corp., Yonder Mountain String Band, Medeski Mountain & Wood, Keller, EOTO, and plenty of others. On top of that Victor Wooten is the "Artist At Large," meaning he'll be bringing his bad ass bass wherever he wants to go. It's Memorial Day weekend, so you have Monday off anyways, right?

Why You Should Go
Obviously fans of Umphrey's and moe. know to be at this fest. Adding Trey to the mix is pretty spectacular. However, more than anything, I would be excited to see what Victor Wooten does. Having him as the Artist At Large could mean him popping up with any of the headliners, sitting in with Trey, jamming with the bluegrass, getting jazzy with MMW, and who knows what else. That's a pretty special occurrence.

What You Need To Know
Your basic ticket is $180 right now, going up to $200 on 4/20. That, however, only gets you in Friday-Sunday, with no late night "red barn" shows. Thursday pre-party pass is $30 and worth the money for the music and the early access to camping. Late night shows are $30 each and tough to get your hands on. Of course every late night "red barn" band will also do a regular set as well, and there's always other music going on if you don't get into the barn. Finally, camping is "park and haul your stuff" camping, meaning no camping by your car. Sucks, but that's life.

May 24-26
The Gorge
George, WA

Sasquatch! is one of the coolest festivals, mixing jam, indie, and whatever else they want into a big pot and then tossing that at The Gorge, one of the greatest venues in the country. This year is definitely more indie-heavy than others, with Mumford and Sons, The Postal Service, Sigur Ros, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, vampire Weekend, The XX, and Elvis Costello all getting high billing. Other artists include Edward Sharpe & Magnetic Zeros, The Lumineers, Cake, Primus, Imagine Dragons, and Dropkick Murphey's.

Why You Should Go
It's the biggest festival held at the Gorge every year. The lineup is always very diverse, so there's really something for everyone. Frankly Mumford could headline the Gorge themselves, so having them on a festival at this location is a big deal as well.

What You Need To Know
As usual, tickets are already sold out. You should know to get on this early. If you're lucky enough to have tickets, all 4 days are included, as well as camping. You're going to get one of the best concert environments in the world for this show. It's a great "in the middle of nowhere" venue that's close enough to a big city to be easy to get to. Enjoy!

Lollapalooza lineup released
After being leaked about a week ago, the lineup for this year's Lollapalooza was officially announced. The festival will be headlined by Mumford and Sons, The Killers, Phoenix, Vampire Weekend, Nine Inch Nails, and The Cure. Other artists include The Postal Service, The Lumineers, Queens of the Stone Age, The National, Knife Party, Thievery Corp., and many, many others.

Strings and Sol
Strings and Sol will return in 2013. The bluegrass destination festival will be held from December 11-15 in Puerto Morales, Mexico. The all-inclusive resort only has room for about 1,000 guests for the event. The event will feature three performances from Yonder Mountain String Band and two shows each from Railroad Earth, Leftover Salmon, Keller Williams & The Travelin' McCoury's, and Greensky Bluegrass.

Newport Folk Fest adds artists
Some great names have been added to the Newport Folk Festival. The event will now be headlined by The Avett Brothers. Joining them will be Old Crow Medicine Show, Amanda Palmer, Justin Townes Earl, and other. The event already featured Jim James, The Lumineers, and others.

moe. adds dates
moe. added to their summer schedule this week. Along with festival performances, the band will be playing a run of dates through the East Coast. There are plenty of gaps, so there easily could be more added.

Also, I will NOT be around next week. I'll be on vacation with my wife for our 10th anniversary. Crazy stuff. But I'll be back in 2 weeks with some more jam for ya. Until then, head over to Facebook and Twitter. Until next week, Jam On!
