411 Music Buy or Sell 06.13.13: Love Somebody At the Family Reunion
Posted by Jeremy Thomas on 06.13.2013

Greetings and salutations, Music Zone readers! Welcome to your top choice in music single opinion columns, 411 Music Buy or Sell! I'm your host Jeremy Thomas, and each week we'll look at some of the hottest new and hit singles and a couple of our esteemed writers will decide if they want to keep the song (Buy) or drop it like it's hot (Sell). Our listeners this week the master of the Low End Theory in Tony Acero, taking on music writer Gina Bortolussi!

All right, enough of the introductions and rules…let's hop to it!

1) Maroon 5 - "Love Somebody"
From Overexposed (A&M/Octone)
Released May 21, 2013
Tony Acero: SELL

I actually like Adam Levine, and Maroon 5 ain't too bad for the most part, but the song seems a bit too generic for my liking. There is nothing wrong with it, exactly, but my interest waned after about a minute and a half, even though the music video was cool in an artisitic way.

Gina Bortolussi: BUY.

I actually really like Maroon 5. I think they could maybe do more to set themselves apart in the music world because so many bands do what they do, but they have some pretty great stand out moments when those moments happen. "Love Somebody" is one of those moments for me. It's a heartfelt song that's actually kind of heartbreaking if you listen to the lyrics and I like everything about it.

ANALYSIS: SPLIT

2) Falling In Reverse - "Alone"
From Fashionably Late (Epitaph)
Released May 7, 2013
Tony Acero: SELL.

While I can appreciate the combination of hardcore rock and rap, there are very few who can meld the two well. I've heard Falling in Reverse do it before, and I applaud the efforts, but this song does nothing for me as it seems too boastful. Maybe it's just not my thing, but listening to a rapper randomly start yelling at me only serves for me to change the song. If you sound like Lonely Island, you're not doing it right.

Gina Bortolussi: SELL.

I couldn't get into this at all. I was actually worried that my neighbors would hear me listening to this song so I turned the volume down very low and even that wasn't low enough. I don't even know what's going on in this song, what's it supposed to be? Rap, pop punk, hardcore? I'm confused.

ANALYSIS: SELL

3) Kelly Rowland - "Dirty Laundry"
From Talk a Good Game (Republic)
Released May 21, 2013
Tony Acero: SELL.

I find Kelly Rowland underrated, and she has really (finally) gotten out from behind the shadow of Destiny's Child. Still, this song is easily forgettable. I think what bugs me the most is the content, which is essentially the selling point od the song. Sorry, but it's not strong enough. It was a nice little confession of her own little issues, but that's what they all came out to - little issues. Not to say that they aren't important, but they're just unimpactful...and it's a song.

Gina Bortolussi: BUY.

The song's pace is a little slow for me, but the lyrics are kind of amazing and extremely honest so I respect Kelly Rowland for that. In the song Rowland is basically talking about being in an abusive relationship and how she felt living in the shadow of Beyonce after Destiny's Child broke up. Even though I don't personally relate to this song, a lot of other people will definitely be able to, which is cool.

ANALYSIS: SPLIT

4) Cassadee Pope - "Wasting All These Tears"
From TBA (Universal Republic)
Released June 4, 2013
Tony Acero: SELL.

Although I didn't say this is a BUY, I do want to point out that I am thoroughly impressed with her voice here. I don't watch The Voice, but my sister claims its an awesome show full of talent. Apparently, she is right. This girl's got some vocals and is a step above the fodder we get in that particular genre. Still, if I am being honest, then I would never BUY this. Nothing wrong with it, though.

Gina Bortolussi: BUY.

I watched Cassadee Pope when she was on The Voice and was a huge fan. Her voice is so versatile; she can sing any kind of song and hit any note. This is a good pop song that I'm a fan of now, but it's very Z100 friendly so I'm sure I'll end up hating it at some point because the radio ruins all of the songs that I like by playing them every ten minutes.

ANALYSIS: SPLIT

5) Halestorm - "Here's To Us"
From The Strange Case Of... (Atlantic)
Released May 14, 2013
Tony Acero: BUY.

Never heard of these kids, but apparently they've been around. It's a nice little celebratory song for the two, and it's a bit catchy. I loved the guitar, and I'm really diggin the chick's vocals. She's got a powerful little yell.

Gina Bortolussi: SELL.

This song is okay, but it really didn't excite me or move me in any way. The lead vocalist has a powerful voice, but it didn't really help the mediocrity of the song. The guitar shredding was the only saving grace. I wasn't really into this one.

ANALYSIS: SPLIT

6) Wu-Tang Clan - "Family Reunion"
From A Better Tomorrow (Soul Temple Music)
Released June 5, 2013
Tony Acero: BUY.

YAY!!! Ok, I haven't really been clamoring for a Wu-Tang return, but if this is what we're getting, I'll take it. Listen to it, this doesn't feel like a 2013 track at all, and I love it! Good shit, RZA and Co.

Gina Bortolussi: BUY.

I'm fascinated by rap music. There's rarely a rap song that I don't like and I like this one. I think it's kind of sweet that they got a little sentimental and named the song "Family Reunion" since Wu-Tang have been away from the scene for a bit. I like that they sampled the O'Jays for the chorus and gave the song an old school vibe.

ANALYSIS: BUY

It's a disagreement-heavy week this week, as only Wu-Tang Clan and Falling in Reverse avoid Splits with a Buy and Sell respectively! Thanks to Tony and Gina for their participation this week; that will do it us! What do you think of the singles we covered? Agree? Disagree? Let us know in the comments!
