Jam Central Station 6.22.13: Dangermuffin - 6.14.13 - The Beachland Tavern - Cleveland, OH
Posted by Jeff Modzelewski on 06.22.2013

Hey everyone! Thanks again for showing up. As you're reading this I'm probably in a van for a 3 1/2 hour trip down to Athens OH for an awesome show tonight. Or maybe I'm passed out afterwards in desperate hopes of recovery. Either way, good times. On with the show!

I almost always love going to see a show like the Dangermuffin show I went to last week. A show where I'm not familiar enough with the band to know the name of most of the songs, but where I know the style of the band and the tremendous talent that they bring to the table. With so much emphasis in the "jam band" music scene being focused on, you know, jamming, it's always great to see a band that is focused on solid songwriting and a straightforward performance. This 3 piece put on a solid set at the Beachland Ballroom that was part folk, part Southern rock, part jam, and all sorts of fun.

The band has put together a solid performance that included plenty of music from their 2 most recent albums, a few older songs, and even some covers. I personally enjoyed their version of Paul Simon's "Late in the Evening." For a song that is so expansive in the instruments used in the original, it was great to see a three piece not only do the song, but do a very good version. That was really the feeling throughout the night for me. The band doesn't include a bass guitar, just a drum kit, an electric guitar, and an acoustic, but the three members filled the space very well. The acoustic guitar helped fill in the low end, and everyone had plenty of room to make interesting music. Being able to hold down the low end while playing the acoustic was particularly impressive, but all three members really had opportunities to step out and shine.

I also don't want to say that the band doesn't jam either. While their set was certainly song-based and not just a platform to get deep into jams, they did improvise and take things in different directions. Both guitarists were left room to solo, and they took some time to jam together with the drums holding down the beat. The fact that the three piece has been together for 6 years and have spent much of that time on the road has certainly allowed them to build a familiarity with each other and a high level of comfort when it comes to trying out different things. Of course, it helps when you have such solid songwriting to base things off of.

Openers Syrup and Splitroot both put on strong yet distinct opening sets. The modern bluegrass Syrup mixed up originals and covers, keeping fans guessing where they were going to go. They even got Dan from Dangermuffin to sit in with them for a Grateful Dead song. Splitroot, on the other hand, focused mainly on original material with a couple well-placed covers. They opened with "Fixin' To Die Blues" and busted through a high energy set, stringing together blues and folk rock songs into a true Americana tapestry.

Overall this was a solid lineup and a great show by all three bands. It's especially nice to see Dangermuffin continue to solidify their following in the Cleveland area. They can draw from a diverse group of fans and they play music that has some very wide appeal. After seeing bands like Trampled by Turtles go from playing the Tavern stage to selling out the Ballroom in just a couple of years, I'm looking forward to seeing Dangermuffin do the same thing in a couple of years.
