411 Music Fact or Fiction 07.19.13: GQ, How Does That Work?
Posted by Joseph Lee on 07.19.2013
Will Chris Brown go to jail for violating his probation? Are Insane Clown Posse the worst rappers of all time? Are we excited for the return of Korn? 411's Joseph Paige Jr and Mikey Migo debate these topics and more!
Welcome to another edition of Fact or Fiction: Music. I'm your host, Joseph Lee.
This week we have Joseph Paige Jr against Mikey MiGo.
Perhaps if it was 1999 and I was still running home from school to watch TRL I'd be totally thrilled about "Head" rejoins Korn for a new album. But unfortunately it's 2013 and the music scene currently is not in need of a group of middle aged men who still thinks they got the rock spirit in them.
Mikey MiGo: FICTION.
I guess, the word "excited" is pushed it. I'm supportive of it. Not so much for the musicianship, but because if it reenergizes the band then that's fine by me. Korn is a not-so-guilty pleasure of mine. Not every band needs to be "hipster-friendly." I'm a big fan of their early albums and random selections from their recent stuff are pretty decent as well. They're just one of those bands that seemed to fall to the wayside and lost a step. If this can get them half of that lost step back, then I say good on them.
Like Korn, no one is checking for another will.i.am track. Let alone a track with the girl we all love to hate, Taylor Swift. Banjos and dubstep beats are not a great mixture.
I have zero interest in anything Taylor Swift does. I go out of my way to avoid her and anything about her. Every so often I'll get a whiff or some new drama and go into ranty tirade. There's the Bruce Banner me who lives a normal life, and then there's me who has to use brain power on Taylor Swift, gets angry, and then turns into the Hulk. And to be fair, I have no interest in William either. I know that's not the right way to spell/say his name, but I'm not arguing with my spell check for that guy.
When it comes to Chris Brown and the law this man has gotten off more than a teenage boy who has a high speed Internet connection and spare time. The fall of Chris Brown will not be due to a small fender bender in which Chris allegedly violated his probation by providing false insurance information. The true fall will be of epic proportions, and someone will unfortunately die. For Chris' same lets just hope it's his career.
Mikey MiGo: FACT.
I have a hard time imagining this guy in jail. It would not be pretty. He'd have to be in a super cushy and safe jail. Just think of all those dudes in there who'll want to "man up" to the guy who hit on the Umbrella-ella-ella-ella girl. He has the means to get out of this. I can't imagine the Chris Brown story having a happy ending. No matter how talented he is or could be, he's going down as one of the most unlikable performers in a long time. There is just a huge vibe of negativity surrounding him.
I'm not a fan of ICP. I've never been shy about that opinion. I used to be really mean and hateful about it like most people typically are, but I think I'm past it. Whatever makes you happy. If you want to wear clown make up and get into the ICP and underground scene then have at it. On a musical standpoint, ICP is not my thing. The lyrics are hokey, the music was never impressive, and their gimmicks got stale rather quickly. I've heard PLENTY of their music so I'm not blindly hating on them. It's just bad. There is not one ICP song that I'd request to hear… EVER. That said, it's hard to say they're the "WORST RAPPERS EVER". I'm sure there are worse. They might be on par with your local open mic rappers, but we can NOT forget that K-Fed made an album.
Joseph Paige Jr: FICTION.
GQ magazine declares Insane Posse as the worst rapper(s) of all time? Excuse me, have you heard of this Mackelmore kid that's constantly on the radio?
It sounds like Fall Out Boy. I don't like Fall Out Boy. Panic! At The Disco was never a band I was really into the begin with. I did enjoy some of their singles in the past and appreciated the artistic approach they brought to their videos and general presentation. They're a band that changes up their sound so I guess their current sound is Fall Out Boy.
Joseph Paige Jr: FACT.
Panic! At the Disco "Miss Jackson" is kind of groovy. Almost makes me forget how annoying the rest of their music has been.
This is much better track than the first single for sure. It's got a lot more soul to it and its easier to get into. I could imagine this song being the "summer jam" of the year if it catches on like it should. It's just one of those songs that gets you moving. It's got the smooth funk of an old "Off the Wall" Michael track, but it's undoubtedly Justin.
Joseph Paige Jr: FACT.
All though I've enjoyed the return of Justin Timberlake his choice of singles from the new record has been lackluster in my opinion. "Suit & Tie" sound cool when it first was released, but in hindsight comes off as incredibly corny and redundant. I think JT understood this and dropped his new single "Take Back the Night" nearly simultaneously with the music video "Tunnel Vision" off the previous album. Part 2 of the 20/20 Experience should be interesting to hear. So here's hoping that JT and Timbaland keeps the track lengths down to a maximum of 4 minutes.
Score Card: 5 for 6
