Jam Central Station 3.29.14: The Revivalists
Posted by Jeff Modzelewski on 03.29.2014
One of the newest bands from the great New Orleans tradition
New Orleans is one of the great musical cities, not just in the U.S., but in the world. Music is a part of daily life in the Big Easy. The city is home to dozens of concert venues, arguably the best metropolitan music festival, and it has served as the launching pad for more artists than I can name. The city celebrates diversity while also having a distinct sound to it. Jazz and funk are tied to New Orleans in the same way that country and bluegrass are tied to Nashville, but New Orleans has a deep tradition in zydeco, brass bands, Cuban music, and many styles of rock. One of the most recent artists to get their start in New Orleans is The Revivalists, a solid rock band that incorporates enough of the classic New Orleans sound to let you know where they're from and what they have going on.
David Shaw moved to New Orleans from Ohio in 2007, looking to make a career in music. He had some songs written and had won a local contest, and he had decided to give it a shot. Shortly after moving, he met guitarist Zack Feinberg while Shaw was playing music on a street corner. The two soon developed a friendship grounded in a shared desire to form a band. Feinberg had already been jamming with drummer Andrew Campanelli, and Campanelli called in the services of his college friend George Gekas for the bass. The final piece of the original lineup was set with the addition of saxophonist Rob Ingraham and pedal steel guitarist Ed Williams, with the final two solidifying their New Orleans sound.
For their first couple years, the band focused on honing their new band in the New Orleans area. They also quickly recorded and released a self-titled EP in 2008, which they released through CDBaby.com and quickly became a featured pick and a top seller. The band added keyboardist/saxophonist Michael Girardot in 2009 to fill out their lineup, and they quickly hit the road in the region. The ran in the same circles as Galactic and Trombone Shorty, who had came up from the region previously, and that helped The Revivalists find fans in a variety of settings.
By the time they released their first full length album, the band had developed a solid classic rock sound with a touch of New Orleans and a lot of heart. The horns and the steel pedal guitar helped fill out an already impressive sound that the band had put together. Vital Signs was marked by great hooks and melodies, impressive guitar work, and horns that gave the album tremendous depth. They were able to get Chris Finney to produce the album as well, who had worked with a vast array of artists previously. The album was very well received and got national airplay, allowing the band to head across the country.
Their second album 2012's City of Sound displayed even more growth for the band. By this time the band had figured out not only how to put on an energetic live show but also how to form that sound in the studio. The album was produced by Ben Ellman, who is also the saxophonist for New Orleans based band Galactic. That connection with Galactic continued when Shaw helped write and sing on the Galactic track "Hey Na Na."
Since the release of City of Sound The Revivalists have truly come into their own. They've shared the stage with many other great New Orleans bands while developing their own new fan base. They've become a fixture on festivals across the country as well, and their energetic live performances lend themselves well to an environment where they're performing in front of people unfamiliar with their music. 2014 looks to be a breakout year for them, as their songs "Criminal" and "When I Die" have both gotten substantial airplay on Sirius/XM Jam On, and they've already been named on many of the bigger festivals. They're ready to move forward as a band, and I see plenty of reasons why that should happen.
Allman Brothers postpone end of their Beacon run
The Allman Brothers announced that they will be postponing the final four shows of their Beach Theatre run. Gregg Allman missed the last two shows of the run with bronchitis, and the band brought in a variety of guests to help fill the hole. The band is planning on rescheduling the remaining shows, or fans can get a refund at the point of purchase.

Sasquatch! cancels 2nd festival
The Sasquatch! Music Festival cancelled their second scheduled event for 2014. They originally planned to add a second, unique festival for Fourth of July weekend to go along with their traditional Memorial Day weekend event. However, apparently that idea didn't have many folks excited, and the event has been cancelled. The Memorial Day weekend event will go on as planned.
