Jam Central Station 4.12.14: Break Science
Posted by Jeff Modzelewski on 04.12.2014

The explosion of the electronic music scene over the past five years has led to an influx of artists in the genre. They've come from various backgrounds and levels of experience to break out in a quickly growing genre. However, few artists were as prepared to lead the pack as drummer Adam Deitch. With over 20 years under his belt as a professional drummer and unparalleled experience, Adam Deitch has put Break Science at the forefront of modern live electronic music.

While many people say that they've been playing music for their entire life, in Deitch's case it's true. He's the son of two drummers and was playing in his parent's funk band from childhood. He branched out into hip-hop in the early 90's as both a producer and a drummer for local artists, including emerging artists like Erika Badu and Mos Def. He attended the Berklee College of Music, and from there began collaborating with a range of musicians in funk, jazz, hip-hop, and R&B, and it was there that the roots for future projects such as Lettuce and Fatbag were planted. He performed as a member of John Scofield's band and as a member of the Average White Band as well.

Lettuce became Deitch's primary outlet as a songwriter starting in the late 90's. The band gained a strong following in the funk scene around the country and they released four albums starting in 2002. Deitch served as producer and primary songwriter for the band, and the members also continued to pursue other projects as well. Deitch continued to perform and produce with other musicians including Xzibit, Redman, 50 Cent, John Scofield, Ledisi, and many others during this time.

By the end of the 00's, Deitch began to focus on a new project. He was looking to blend his drumming and production work with in a new project, and he was also looking at what up and coming producers like Pretty Lights were doing. He teamed up with Borahm Lee to begin putting the vision together. The result was a blend of electronic and hip-hop, with heavy hitting beats, room to improvise, and some great guest vocals as well. Break Science burst on the scene and was quickly hitting the club and festival circuit, using Deitch's extensive history to get the band some breaks early on. In 2011 the duo released their debut EP Further Than Our Eyes Can See featuring guest appearances by Talib Kweli, Paper Diamond, Gramatik, and others.

2012 saw the release of their second EP, Monolith Code. By this time the duo was also touring with Pretty Lights, and they used the tour to play numerous Pretty Lights after parties. They finally released a full-length album in 2013. Seven Bridges was again very heavy on guest vocals including Redman, Citizen Chance, CX, and others. Lettuce also guested on a song, and Dominic Lalli from Big Gigantic has a spot on the album as well. The success of this album, as well as their increased visibility from touring with Pretty Lights, has led to the band headlining their own shows and getting bigger crowds at festivals. The duo continues to work closely with Pretty Lights and Pretty Lights Music while still making their own path.

Lockin' adds artists
The Lockin' Festival added another round of artists this week. New performers include Umphrey's McGee, Wilco, Keller Williams Grateful Grass (featuring Keith Moseley & Jeff Austin) as well as Keller's Grateful Gospel, a new project featuring Keller's funk band More Than A Little along with Furthur's John Kadlecik, and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. The lineup already features Phil Lesh & Friends, Bob Weir & Ratdog, Widespread Panic, String Cheese Incident, Allman Brothers Band, and many other great acts. The collaborations coming from this event should be amazing.
