Jam Central Station 4.26.14: Summer Camp Music Festival Preview
Posted by Jeff Modzelewski on 04.26.2014
The first stop on Jam Central Station's annual Festival Tour is Summer Camp!
Since 2001, Summer Camp has been one of the most exciting jam-band festivals in the country. Originally hosts moe. have played a huge part in the event since it's inception and have played every event. Umphrey's McGee jumped on board a few years later, and they've been a multi-set staple at the festival for many years. Beyond that Summer Camp is known for an amazing atmosphere of family-friendly people, a beautiful location, exciting late-night opportunities in the red barn, and only occasional massive weather issues. 2014 looks to be no exception, with a huge lineup on tap that is sure to create a weekend to remember.
Umphrey's McGee and moe. are the annual Summer Camp headliners. Each band typically plays 5 sets over 3 nights during the weekend, giving casual fans ample opportunity to catch each and hardcore fans enough of their favorite band to last quite a while. Umphrey's McGee will also be playing a late-night "Red Barn" set on Sunday night, so Umphrey's weekend is going to be especially jam-packed. On top of these two stellar jam bands at the top of their game, fans are in for a special treat with both the Zac Brown Band and the Trey Anastasio Band playing 2 sets at the festival, and Bassnectar will be leading the electronic music delegation. Zac Brown Band is the leading country/jam crossover, with dedicated fans from both genres, while TAB is a go-to favorite for Phish fans when Phish isn't touring. Plus Trey has been sitting in with various artists at festivals recently (Furthur at Lockin' last year and the Allman Brothers at Wannee this year), so who knows if we'll see some extra Trey. Bassnectar always brings a party at his shows, and Summer Camp has a significant EDM component this year that will draw his fans.
The Top Tier
Beyond those acts, the top tier is very stacked. Primus brings the 90's alt-rock, Sligthly Stoopid has been around forever, and Girl Talk will bring a dance party. Yonder Mountain String Band will lead a pretty stacked bluegrass contingent at the festival, and Lotus and EOTO will be another impressive pair of EDM acts. Blues Traveler, Matisyahu, G. Love & Special Sauce, Lettuce, Beats Antique, and Keller Williams & More Than A Little all deserve recognition as well.
After the top names there really is something for everyone. Zac Brown Band fans will enjoy bands like Blackberry Smoke, and there will be some amazing bluegrass from bands like Greensky Bluegrass and The Devil Makes Three. The Wood Brothers have a great acoustic Americana feel. Break Science, Dopapod, The Werks, and Cosby Sweater each bring a segment of the live jamtronic sound. Other highlights include The Motet, Bill Evan's Soulgrass, Nahko & Medicine For The People, The Floozies, Floodwood, John Wayne & The Pain, The Ragbirds, Pimps of Joytime, Turkuaz, Twiddle, and many others. With multiple stages playing music all day, there's enough stage time to bring in plenty of great bands.
Summer Camp certainly focuses on the music, but there are some other fun things going on. There are acoustic performances and workshops in the Soulshine tent. There's also the annual Field Day competition where teams compete against each other in kickball, tug of war, and other fun and silly games. Some of these teams have been together for years, so it's always a tough competition. Beyond that there will be greening initiatives, the "RelaxSonic" portal, daily yoga, hooping courses, live art, and glass blowing demonstrations. So come for the music, but don't ignore the other stuff!
May 23-25, with a pre-party on Thursday the 22nd.
Three Sisters Park in Chillicothe, IL.
So many good reasons to go to this festival. The lineup is spectacular, obviously. Even if you don't like either Umphrey's or moe. there are dozens of other bands in various genres to suit any taste. The event has always had a very family feel to it, probably in no small part due to the fact that it's a "haul your stuff in" event, not a car camping festival. Folks get the same spot year after year and are able to camp in big groups with no problem. The grounds are relatively small for a festival of this size, meaning you can get between stages for shows without much trouble.
For me, I'm going for the lineup and for the people. I had a great time covering the event in 2012, and, if it weren't for family conflicts, I probably would've covered Summer Camp in 2011 and 2013 as well. I'm sure that there will be conflicts, but I'm hoping to cover multiple sets of Umphrey's McGee as well as Trey Anastasio Band, Primus, Girl Talk, Yonder Mountain String Band, Lotus, Blues Traveler, Keller Williams, Matisyahu, Lettuce, Everyone Orchestra, Beats Antique, The Devil Makes Three, Greensky Bluegrass, The Wood Brothers, Break Science, Dopapod, Nahko & Medicine for The People, The Ragbirds, and probably a half-dozen other bands. Looks like a good four days to me.
Jeff Austin leaving Yonder Mountain String Band
In a joint statement Jeff Austin and the rest of Yonder Mountain String Band annoucned that Austin will be leaving the band. Austin has been focusing on a solo career and will move forward exclusively there. The rest of the band will honor their 2014 commitments with a variety of guests before putting together a permanent lineup in 2015.
Boyd Tinsley reveals arthritis issue
Boyd Tinsley announced this week that he has been dealing with arthritis in his hand recently. There have been concerns about Boyd due to recent performances, particularly the fact that he has dropped his bow at shows recently. Tinsley stated that the arthritis is being treated and he expects to be fine.
