411 Music Fact or Fiction 05.23.13: Creepy Hologram Celebrities
Posted by Joseph Lee on 05.23.2014

Welcome to another edition of Fact or Fiction: Music. I'm your host, Joseph Lee.

This week we have myself against Jeremy Wilson

1) You have no interest in a new Maroon 5 album.

Jeremy Wilson: FACT. I've never bought a Maroon 5 album and don't go out of my way to listen to them. That said, I'm pretty sure all the major singles off their next album will be inescapable in some way or another, because they're a savvy band and Adam Levine has never been bigger thanks to The Voice. Although, I still contend Levine looks ridiculous with dyed blond hair.

Joseph Lee: FACT. A thousand times fact. I can't fathom why this band is popular, as their music is just terrible to me. I'm not a real music snob or anything but I just can't stand the vocals of Adam Levine whenever I hear him on the radio. Really not looking forward to hearing more.

Score: 1 for 1

2) The fight between Jay Z and Solange Knowles isn't a big deal.

Jeremy Wilson: FACT. I know I couldn't care less about it. I'm pretty sure most people couldn't care less about it. That said, it does make for great fodder among the tabloids and entertainment-industry TV shows, even if we have no clue what the real story is. They're in-laws. They had a fight. It got ratcheted up a notch. Unfortunately for them, it also got recorded. They'll probably laugh about it a few years from now. Unless, you know, this is a harbinger of the end of the Jay Z-Beyonce relationship. Then we'll look back and all race to say we knew it.

Joseph Lee: FACT. I'm not sure anyone really said it is, but there are some thinking Solange should be charged or whatever. Clearly Jay Z hasn't pressed charges. Can't we just look at it as a funny video where a woman half HOVA's size tries to beat him up? Why must we make a federal case of everything?

Score: 2 for 2

3) The Michael Jackson hologram at the Billboard Music Awards was a waste of time.

Jeremy Wilson: FACT. Holograms are cool. Holograms of dead celebrities are not cool. They are creepy and a waste of time. Especially in this case since I so astutely avoided watching the Billboard Music Awards, only for Joseph to ask a question about them and force me to go watch footage of it. If you enjoy creepy holograms of dead celebrities (most of whom were creepy when they were alive) and wish we could see even more dead entertainers brought back from the dead in digitally projected form FOR ONE NIGHT ONLY, I feel sorry for you. Ultimately, I want to blame CNN, for their blatant misuse of hologram technology.

Joseph Lee: FACT. Yeah I don't get the holograms of musicians either. Why would you want to see that? Do you think that it's "close enough" to seeing the actual guy perform live? It's not. You might as well sit in a movie theater and watch a concert film. At least for a music awards show there are other draws but they really pushed the fact that Jackson was "performing". The whole thing was kind of embarrassing.

Score: 3 for 3

SWITCH

4) Jack White's "Just One Drink" is another good song from him.

Joseph Lee: FACT. Yeah, I thought this was a lot of fun. Jack White can pretty much make any genre of music work, even a country-sounding tune like this. I eagerly anticipate his new album and hope that it's just as good as Blunderbuss, if not better.

Jeremy Wilson: FACT. The last time I participated in this, I was asked a question about Jack White's upcoming album. I responded then as I will now. I can't wait for this album to come out. I've dug the stuff I've heard so far, and this single has much more of a Rolling Stones vibe than we're used to with his stuff. It's not his best stuff, but even half-decent Jack White is better than 80-90% of other musicians.

Score: 4 for 4

5) The Foo Fighters documentary series on HBO will be worth watching.

Joseph Lee: FACT. I might not necessarily go out of my way to see it, but I think with Dave Grohl behind the camera and focusing on the creation of the band's music it might be better than normal. Sound City was decent, no reason to believe this wouldn't be.

Jeremy Wilson: FICTION. Frankly, I don't know if it's cool or not to like The Foo Fighters, but I've always had a soft spot for them. So I was going to say Fact, until I read the articles and press release for this. It sounds super gimmicky and a bit like a pretentious exercise in self-promotion. I'll give the album a listen, but I doubt I'd go out of my way to watch this...even if I had HBO (which I don't).

Score: 4 for 5

6) You're not a fan of 50 Cent's video "Twisted".

Joseph Lee: FACT. Not even a little bit. I've never cared for 50 Cent and it's not likely to change based on this. Pick any rap complaint you want and use it here. It's typical "look at me I'm great" stuff that rap has become and the music video isn't much better.

Jeremy Wilson: FACT. I don't pretend to be an expert on rap or music videos, but that has got to be one of the most dull, clichéd rap videos I've ever seen. The track itself isn't much to write home about, but the video is just alternating between shots of 50 Cent celebrating with his boys and making out with some woman. That's it, over and over again. Total snoozefest.

Score: 5 for 6
