Jam Central Station: The Pimps of Joytime
Posted by Jeff Modzelewski on 08.23.2014
One of the best new funk and soul bands around
Over the past 7 years, the Pimps of Joytime have exploded onto the music scene with their high-energy performances, excellent albums, and their own unique blend of soul and funk. The band has had a rotating cast of musicians, but Brian J, Chauncey Yearwood, and Mayteana Morales have formed the core of the band since its inception. With a variety of styles and experiences behind them, they've brought Pimps of Joytime to the forefront of the modern soul and funk scene.
The band got its start in Brooklyn, although they split time between Brooklyn and New Orleans. They started out with exceptional live performances, playing for bars and clubs but quickly gaining a following. By the time they released High Steppin' in 2008 the band was already gaining popularity. The release helped solidify their fan base as well as give them opportunities to play larger events. They began to collaborate with other similar artists, play major festivals, and generally gain exposure wherever they could. They averaged well over 100 dates a year around the country, maintaining a packed schedule and putting on spectacular shows.
They didn't record again until releasing 2011's Janxta Funk!, but the band continued to make a name for themselves. Brian J in particular developed both as a musician and a songwriter, tailoring his music to the band's strengths. By allowing each member to play to their unique strengths, the Pimps of Joytime have been able to stand out from the crowd significantly. Because of this, Janxta Funk wasn't so much an evolution for the band as it was becoming more what they already were, a diverse set of solid musicians and vocalists.
The band has continued to make their primary impact through touring. The festival circuit has been very good to the Pimps, and they play multiple major events a year. But they also do over 100 shows a year, keeping up a solid pace. Surprisingly, the band hasn't felt a need to record since their 2011 release, although there's no telling when a new album may be out for these guys. The good news is that their lack of recording doesn't seem to be a problem for their success, and fans are happy to see them live instead of listening to them on a record. They seem to be a band that's still getting off the ground, so it won't be surprising to hear a lot more from these guys in the future.
