All You Cannot Live Without 02.06.06: Manic Monday Edition
Posted by Ben Czajkowski on 02.06.2006
The Steelers are super again, more Smashing Pumpkins and Tool, rare Guns N Roses, P.O.D. flops, Marilyn Mason music and movies, Wes Borland vs. Fred Durst, and so much more inside!
Prelude to the Media
Anyone who was anyone last night was watching the Super Bowl. And anyone who is anyone knows how fucking lame and retarded everyone played. In the end, though, the Steelers came out on top, and Pittsburgh had a reason to smile again. And also a reason to torch couches, flip cars, and rip down a Subway Sandwich awning and burn it in the middle of the college part of the city.
Sorry, Modzelewski, don't take it personally. The Browns might, someday, in yours or your grandchildren's lifetime, win a Super Bowl. Let's settle for a playoff game first. I might be a dirty, no-good, disgusting Pittsburgh Steelers fan, but I'm a dirty, no-good, disgusting Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers fan.
Alright, enough of my Jeff-bashing section and onto the real stuff. Starting today, I'll be taking over the Monday slot that was originally Modzelewski's, since he's gone onto the Political Column realm of the site. Tool. His Monday Morning Metal column will be sadly missed, but I think Rhett and I can handle the load. Remember, Jeff, if you ever want to do a guest column, hit me up. I will try to cover the aspects of your column like GnR et al but I can't promise shit. The column is a bit late today because I've been traveling back and forth between Dayton and Pittsburgh this weekend to enjoy the Super Bowl with my family. And by family, I mean 35 drunk neighbors since my mother wasn't really interested in watching a crappy game.
Everyone knows what this Wednesday is! Yes, it's the Grammy's! Who's excited for them?! Yeah, that's what I thought. Not anyone that reads this column. There's really nothing exciting about them this year. No big, shocking performers, and it's most likely going to be a sweep by Mariah Carey. Heh, I wouldn't be too surprised if she wins best Metal song, too. Looking at the list of nominees for that If you missed my in-depth coverage from a few weeks ago, you can read it still! Forever! Or until Brandon or Ashish "accidentally" delete my archive.
By the way, I heard Godsmack's new tune on the radio Saturday afternoon, as I drove back to Pittsburgh, and, sadly to say, I was not wholly impressed.

The Low Down on the Underground
Well, here's another disappointing record sale. P.O.D.'s newest and crappiest effort yet, Testify, only sold 54,000 copies its first week in the United States. Debuting at #9 on the Billboard Charts, Testify has seen a lot of heavy publicity and plugging. It follows Payable on Death from 2003, which, in comparison, sold 106,000 copies its opening week (and also debuted at #9, coincidently). Let me spell it out for you: This. Album. Is. Terrible. Usually, I like one or two tracks, but I can't find a single one. I recommend picking this one up at your own risk. It already has my vote for worst album of 2006, and this year is only already only a month old.
Just so I can laugh at my friend Marshall, one of his favorite bands, Scarlet, their new album, which came out this past week, sold only 1,000 copies. Called This Was Always Meant To Fall Apart, the title has really held its ground for the band and proven true: their music has fallen apart. It's a complete step backwards from their prior album. I don't care what Marshall says, I'm right. I always am.
While I'm on the topic of flops for their first week, the heavily-anticipated new Sworn Enemy album also proved true to its name. Called The Beginning of the End, it will probably be the bands final album together, considering it sold only 2,000 copies.
And the only reason I'm posting this is because, oh my god, someone with almost-my-last-name is mentioned here. Coldseed, the new band featuring former Blind Guardian/current Savage Circus skinsman Thomen Stauch and Soilwork singer Björn "Speed" Strid, began mixing their debut album on February 5 with engineer Charly Czajkowsky (he he he). The CD will be completed by the end of the month for a spring release via Nuclear Blast Records. Rough-mix audio samples of two tracks from the upcoming CD are available at the band's official web site: "Democracy Lesson" (mp3) and "On My Way" (mp3). Strid had previously described Coldseed's music as "a mixture between Rammstein and Alice in Chains." What do I think it sounds like? Good question! Let me listen and the verdict it: it sounds like heavy Soilwork, but I can see where Strid gets off saying it sounds like Alice in Chains, just by the samples. Actually, I would say this is a much more melodic Soilwork. I like it a lot. Please, listen to the samples.
The sexiness of Lacuna Coil has made its way online in the form of the video for "Our Truth," the first single from the highly-anticipated Karmacode, due out in a couple months. You can masturbate to, er, watch the video over at this link.
Audioslave will release their third studio effort, coming this June. An exact release date, title and track listing are not available yet, although it is known that the band began working on new music as early as last summer, with work picking up again shortly after the Christmas and New Year holidays. Although there was a two-and-a-half year gap between the band's self-titled 2002 debut and its 2005 sophomore effort, Out Of Exile, the new disc will arrive just over a year since Out Of Exile's release last May.
She Wants Revenge has finally released the video for their highly-touted single "Tear You Apart," which comes from their self-titled debut. The CD was released on January 31, and the band is already heavily underway with touring. And unfortunately, due to my poorness, I'm going to miss them. I did, however, buy the album for $6.99 from Tower.com, which came with a signed CD booklet. Woooo! Here's the video. It's simply fucking amazing. I expect nothing less from this duo. The video is kind of like E.T. meets the Matrix.
Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler has told RollingStone.com that the band will start work on a new album in late spring. "It's going to be just like what the White Stripes are doing, and like a couple of songs on Sheryl Crow's new album," said Tyler. "You'll listen to it and be like, 'I've heard that before' but you never did." Look for that by year's end.
MTV.com is reporting that former Stone Temple Pilots and current Velvet Revolver frontman Scott Weiland has inked a publishing deal with Scribner to write his memoir, which will include stories about his rise to rock stardom, his battles with drugs, and his life now that he's sober. The title: "Why I'm A Fucking Idiot and Why I'll Never Overcome It," written a la James Frey. Weiland is also slated to co-star in a new film from Joe Carnaham ("Narc"), and to issue his own line of clothing through Von Dutch. In addition, Weiland's new solo album is tentatively scheduled to arrive this spring. What a fucking waste of everything.
Chevelle will have you seeing red again, soon. They've posted a message at its official web site saying that the band is currently writing and recording material for its fourth album. No other details on the project were made available.
Are They Still Out There or Did They Finally Overdose?
More Smashing Pumpkins updates for yinz guys. As, I've been reporting for a few weeks, the heavy rumor that Billy Corgan has rectified his sins of being a giant ass-cock. The band signed a new management deal with Front Line Management. Corgan and original drummer Jimmy Chamberlin will initially begin work on a new studio album, which will be the follow-up to 2000's MACHINA/the Machines of God. Rumors have it that multi-instrumentalist Billy Mohler will be involved in some fashion. The band is planning to tour this year and rumors already have them headlining Lollapalooza. So, how long do you think it's going to take for everyone to get pissed off at Corgan for being a self-centered, egotistical fuckhead? I give it very soon.
Melissa Auf Der Maur said she's not sure whether Corgan has reached out to guitarist James Iha or bassist D'Arcy Wretzky to complete the band's original lineup, but she said she's told Corgan that she'd be happy to pitch in if he needs her; Auf Der Maur replaced Wretzky in 1999 and worked with the group until it disbanded in 2000.
Rare Axl Rose (Guns N Roses) recordings made while he was a member of the early '80s band Rapidfire are still reportedly being mixed in Los Angeles. The tapes, which were recorded in May 1983, have been in storage in the original eight-track format for more than 20 years. The songs featured on the tape are as follows:
01. Ready To Rumble
02. All Night Long
03. The Prowler
04. On The Run
05. Closure
RAPIDFIRE's lineup was as follows: Axl Rose (vocals), Kevin Lawrence (guitar), Mike Hammernik (bass), and Chuck Gordon (drums). You can expect this later on this year, maybe.
Hey, I didn't know Aaron Lewis had a second kid I need to learn to care more.
Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne are among the Co-Chairs for 14th annual Academy Award Viewing Dinner and After-Party to benefit the Elton John AIDS Foundation (EJAF), set to take place on Sunday, March 5, 2006 at the Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood, CA. The Elton John AIDS Foundation party is one of the most important events on Oscar night, as it brings together the biggest names in the entertainment industry to raise money for one very worthy cause, the fight against HIV/AIDS.
In case you missed it, Disturbed frontman David Draiman's six-minute MTV's "Cribs" segment which originally aired on Wednesday, January 25 has been made available for download at this locale. It's 30 MB of pure sex.
According to The Los Angeles Times, Tool have been confirmed for the seventh edition of the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival, which will take over the small desert town of Indio, California on April 29 and 30. Tickets go on sale Saturday. Their new album has finished mixing and will be released in either April or May. Guitarist Adam Jones is currently directing the album's first single's video.
A video clip of the surviving members of Alice in Chains performing their classic track "Rooster" with the help of Tool vocalist Maynard James Keenan, Damageplan singer Patrick Lachman and Heart frontwoman Ann Wilson at a benefit for tsunami relief on February 18, 2005 in Seattle, Washington has been posted online at this location.
Apparently, Hollywood and music didn't learn its lesson when it gave Rob Zombie a camera and let him make "House" and "Devil's." Reportedly, Marilyn Manson's first film as a director, called "Phantasmagoria - The Visions of Lewis Carroll", will see him doing practically everything. He will play the title character (the author of "Alice In Wonderland"), in addition to handling the score, co-writing the script and directing. Model Lily Cole will play Alice, while Angelina Jolie has reportedly been approached to appear as the Red Queen. If you remember correctly, Johnny Depp said he would have stepped aside as Charlie in "Chocolate Factory" to let Manson take over, but Mason declined. Manson is slated to appear in a few other movies in 2006, including a supernatural thriller called "Rise", "King Shot" with Nick Nolte, and star and direct Asia Argento's "The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things". He's also interested in producing a three-film series from stories by Edgar Allan Poe. The piece of news you probably care most about: Manson has been working on his sixth studio album, which he hopes to release this spring.
Are They At Odds?
I know you all are wondering what happened to Limp Bizkit and their album sales plummeting and hardly any new music to speak of. Why, you might ask? Well, here might be some answers for yinz. This week's new feature pits Wes Borland against Freddy Durst. Borland is currently finishing up things with his new, awesome project Black Light Burns while Durst sits around with his thumb in his ass. Each man had something to say about the other.
Borland: To clear things up...
So please read this carefully before jumping to conclusions about me "Fucking over LB" and "Quitting the band again" because I haven't done either. A lot of you were asking questions about what has been going on with LB, and here is the best report I can give you. It's all I know, so can we please just leave it at this. Thanks, now here's the post from earlier:
Alright, ready here it goes... When I originally left Limp Bizkit, it was because I was sick of it for various reasons, I made a few friends, Worked with a bunch of cool people, and tried to get a new project together. After a few different variations of this project (Eat the Day was one, which included three different vocalists, The Damning Well was the other) I realised that although some cool stuff had been written, it wasn't good enough for me, and I was irritated at myself for spending so much time on it because I had just turned down the guitar spot in A Perfect Circle. Drag, but it was probably for the best. Shortly after I started talking to Trent Reznor and started to work with him during the demo process for With Teeth, and was lined up to be the touring guitar player. This was great at the time, but the more I thought about it, the more I kind of missed playing with Bizkit, and I thought before I get locked into NIN, I want to go talk to Fred and see if we are still at odds. Well, we talked and it seemed like we weren't anymore. So I told Trent that I was going to go make a Bizkit record, and that I was sorry to bow out of Nails, and he was cool about it. We started writing, and ended up having to write three records. Finally we got to a place where Fred claimed to be happy with the music, and so then we recorded. TWICE!!! Once with Sammy and once with John. Fred did vocals on 6 songs out of 13, and stopped. We have tried to go back in 2 times since then with the same result. Lots of music, no vocals recorded. So it would seem that what I write now is not what Fred wants to sing over, and nobody wants to tour. Touring is also impossible at this point due to last summer's cancellations. Nobody will book the band currently because they are afraid that LB will cancel again. So I'm depending on only myself now, and the few people I work with. Hope this clears it all up for you.
Durst's response, kind of:
There is no current activity going on in the Limp Bizkit camp. Fred is focusing more on his directing and Wes is spending his time on his new band Black Light Burns. Wes has not quit Limp Bizkit, he is just focusing on his new band during LB's downtime. Click on the picture below to check out Wes' new band, and in the meantime I put some new songs on the profile for you all. WEEEEEAAAAAK.
Black Light Burns looks to seek daylight this coming spring. Tracks set to appear on the album are as follows, but not in sequenced order yet (but pretty close to it):

It's A Problem to Just Quit, So I'll End With This
I'll have another BCSA next week. I didn't really think anyone was stellar because I had such a crappy week where nothing was splendid. Until next time: peace, love, a little pessimism and some chocolate BC
