Wake Up, Time To Rock 02.11.06
Posted by Tollah on 02.11.2006

Hey T-Fanz, welcome to the new and not really improved Wake Up, Time To Rock!! I am your host, the Supreme T-Meister, and I'll be your Saturday news reporter from now until the end of time. That's right, a news reporter that isn't metal (though there will be some), indie or hip-hop. Rock on.

Josh Homme Is A Band Whore

It looks like Josh Homme have spread himself -- now he is in three bands. The Queens Of The Stone Age frontman's new band called 5.15ers will make their live debut in the US later this month.

The band will consist of Homme and Chris Goss, who has previously participated in Homme's Desert Sessions projects as well as producing several Kyuss albums -- the band Homme was in before QOTSA.

The band is not planning to record as of yet, but are focusing on playing live. Goss told Billboard he is unsure how the band will sound as the band have no songs written at the moment.

He added: "We've never done it (played live) before. I think there will be some improve involved. Perhaps some covers, we're thinking." He described their music as "art fag", according to NME.com.

Another band featuring Josh Homme, Eagles Of Death Metal, have recently announced details of their upcoming second album (read story on UG). "Death By Sexy" will be released on April 10 via Downtown Records.

Preceding the LP, the first single to be taken from the record will be "I Want You So Hard (Boys Bad News)" and the group have just finished filming the video in Los Angeles.

Art fag? Okay, that sounds really really gay. Anyone who describes themself or anything about themself as 'fag' or 'faggot' is trying too hard. I certainly won't be checking out this queer band!

NFL Is Too Boring To Handle The Stones

Two of the three songs performed by the Rolling Stones during their 12-minute-long Super Bowl XL halftime set were cleaned up by censors. Lyrics from the band's "Start Me Up" and "Rough Justice" didn't make the telecast.

According to The Associated Press, the show's editors cut portions of two lyrics that were deemed too sexually suggestive for broadcast. The one Stones tune to escape the dump button was the 1965 hit "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction," which, as frontman Mick Jagger pointed out, was the "one [song] we could have done at Super Bowl I.

"The changes to the Stones' performance were made by the National Football League and its producers. The inclusion of a five-second tape delay — and the decision to edit the two Stones songs — follows two years after Janet Jackson's breast was exposed during a halftime routine with Justin Timberlake. That incident resulted in fines of $550,000 for CBS.

Thanks a lot, Janet Jackson. Now I won't be able to not hear sexual lyrics when I don't watch the Superbowl. Stupid bitch.

Velvet Revolver News

Velvet Revolver frontman Scott Weiland is slated to co-star in a new film from Joe Carnaham, the celebrated director of "Narc", and to issue his own line of clothing through Von Dutch. In addition, Weiland's new solo album is tentatively scheduled to arrive this spring, according to a press release from Canongate Books, who have acquired U.K. rights to Weiland's forthcoming memoir, "Desperation No. 5".

Written in collaboration with David Ritz, the co-author of landmark, bestselling autobiographies of Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin, among others, and the only four-time winner of the Ralph J. Gleason Music Book Award, "Desperation No. 5" is described in the press release as "Weiland's haunting, no-holds-barred memoir of the years when he scaled the pinnacle of stardom, only to plunge into the chasm of addiction, and then — unlike so many others, including his contemporary Kurt Cobain — manage to claw his way back up. Weiland is committed to exploring everything 'from my addiction to opiates to the psycho-pharmacological treatment of my bipolarity' and how he finally emerged as a sober, business-savvy artist at the peak of his creativity, as well as a loving, dedicated husband and father."

Canongate expects to publish the book in autumn 2007. Scribner are publishing in the United States.

Wow, I had no idea he was releasing a solo album this year. My God, that will suck tremendously! Hopefully it does really well so he quits Velv and they can hire a good frontman instead.

Smashing Pumpkins Reunion On The Cards

Melissa Auf Der Maur, ex-Smashing Pumpkins bassist since 1999, has told MTV that rumours of the band's reunion are absolutely true.

Auf said frontman Billy Corgan has been working on material that will, at some point, surface in the form of a new Smashing Pumpkins album.

"From what I understand, Billy [will be] making a Pumpkins record over the next little while," Auf Der Maur told MTV News last week. "Everyone knows Billy doesn't need too many people to make a Pumpkins record, other than Jimmy [Chamberlin, longtime Pumpkins drummer] — who he has [on board]."

A spokesperson for Azoff Management confirmed Thursday (February 2) that Corgan and Chamberlin have signed on with the firm as Smashing Pumpkins, and that the two are writing new music. A source close to the situation told MTV News that the duo plan to record over the summer and that the new Pumpkins could surface before the end of the year — however, no definitive plans are set.

Auf Der Maur said she's not sure whether Corgan has reached out to guitarist James Iha or bassist D'Arcy Wretzky to complete the band's original lineup, but she said she's told Corgan that she'd be happy to pitch in if he needs her.

"My services are there for him whenever he needs them," she said. "Assuming I'm not on tour — but even then, we can cross paths. I love the Pumpkins, and to play those songs again would be nothing but fun for me. It was a big part of my life."

Auf Der Maur said it wouldn't be a true Pumpkins reunion without D'Arcy's bass. "The coolest thing would be if D'Arcy was around, but I don't know where she's at and I don't think [Corgan or Chamberlin] do either," she said. "But I feel very comfortable being second best."

Speculation that Corgan's seminal rock troupe would be taking Coachella's stage in late April was at least partially quashed on Wednesday, when the event's organizers released the two-day concert's Pumpkin-less official bill. That same afternoon, rumors began circulating that the Pumpkins would be headlining Lollapalooza this summer. However, according to the source, if Lolla does come back, "You can take it to the bank [that the Pumpkins] won't be on it."

Whether or not she's involved, Auf Der Maur says she just wants the band's reunion to be done right. "I hope they don't rush it, 'cause the record should be the absolute best it can be. [And they should] then strategize, because as we know, grunge is about to come back: The '80s trend is almost done and we're about to hit 1990 again. It's scary to think, but very true."

Credit: ultimate-guitar.com

What 80s trend? Am I missing something here? Where's the hair metal, the sleaze, the thrash and the glam? You could say the Darkness but they sound more 70s (Queen, Van Halen, Def Leppard) than 80s. Grunge became big by being the exact opposite of these things. I have come to the conclusion that Melissa Auf Der Maur (stupid name and probably fake) has no idea what the hell she's waffling on about.

BTW, a new Pumpkins album will probably be completely awful.

Massive Lesbians Form Led Zep Cover Band

Four women rockers who took on the music of Led Zeppelin are driving club audiences to a frenzy and, offstage, whipping up speculation over their sexual tastes with the name of the band: Lez Zeppelin.

"We have sort of a 'don't ask, don't tell' policy," says Steph Paynes, lead guitar player and the "Jimmy Page" of the group. "It's better to keep it all a mystery, and in the end it really doesn't matter. What matters is the music."

The New York-based quartet, which came together almost three years ago, is among a small but growing number of all-female tribute bands Spin Magazine recently referred to as "Chicks With Picks," and include the playfully dubbed AC/DShe, Cheap Chick and The Ramonas.

"It wasn't like we decided just to do an all-girl cover band for the sake of it," Paynes said in an interview with Reuters. "It was strictly me lounging on the couch, listening to a Led Zep album and being in absolute ecstasy over the music. I can't think of anything I'd rather be playing than this."

With veteran New York-area musicians Helen Destroy on drums, Lisa Brigantino on bass, mandolin and keyboards and Sarah McLellan on vocals, the group is electrifying. But the question that consistently follows the band around is whether any or all of its members are, in fact, lesbians.

"Oh, definitely maybe," Payne said. "There's no question about maybes.

"I was aware of what the name might suggest, but that to me was not a problem at all," she added.

Paynes said despite the nudge and wink the band's name conveys, their audience is not dominated by lesbians. "There is some gay and lesbian following, but it's mostly just a Led Zeppelin following. Male, female, in every age group," she said before getting ready for a sold-out gig that night at New York's Bowery Ballroom.

Paynes said she thinks many come to see if a group of women can recreate music with such a testosterone-driven sound. "It was pretty daunting to perform this stuff live, even for Led Zeppelin," she said. "Even they didn't keep it going once John Bonham died."

Lesbians rule and Led Zeppelin rule. Umm, I'm not sure why this is news. Hopefully they are hot lesbians and not ugly masculine ones.

Lars Ulrich Almost Gets Pissed On

According to Jason Gagnon of The Daily Cougar, "one brave man made an attempt to urinate on troll Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich" last Friday night (Jan. 20) at a Houston bar "before being tossed out by some of the 'musician's' entourage." Added Gagnon: "I know this isn't as awesome as the guy from the North Side Kings knocking out Danzig, but we should still treat local rocker Bill Fool (bands include Bickley and the Down 'N' Dirties) as a hero for trying to give that Napoleonic little bastard a golden shower.

"Of course, this is hard to believe, but there is photographic evidence of the encounter that is making its way to my mailbox shortly [photo; credit: Tracy Sanchez], and after talking to a barroom of people who witnessed this glorious event, allow me to provide you with a brief explanation of what went down.

"Bill was wasted out of his mind at the bar when some friends notice a rather short fellow who looked an awful lot like Ulrich in a corner. After some recon work, it turns out the guy was in town for the Basquiat exhibit (which you all should go visit on a daily basis) since he owns some of the paintings on display. So, in a moment of divine inspiration, Bill found someone with a camera, walked over to the rock star's table, exposes himself but is unfortunately thrust out of the venue before he could even squeeze out a drop.

"Having known the man for about a decade and having seen him do some pretty outlandish stuff (usually involving his unleashed genitalia), nothing has made me prouder to be his friend than his failed attempt at pulling an R. Kelly on one of the most annoying little jerks in music history. All hail Bill Fool!"

Credit: ultimate-guitar.com

Ha, I like how they describe him as "troll Metallica drummer". I am sure the guy's received plenty of golden showers from Kirkie so I don't see why this would be such a big deal. He'll probably write some song lyrics about it that James Hetfield doesn't like and then sulk and whine until the rest of the band let him put them on the new album. Probably.

Japan Loves Judas Priest

JUDAS PRIEST management co-ordinator Jayne Andrews has posted the following message on the group's official web site:

"All of the band took a well deserved break over the Christmas and New Year holidays. Having been touring for nearly two years, they were badly in need of recharging their batteries! Now they are raring to go and are starting work on their new studio album. For this reason, they have decided not to do any touring this year but to work straight through on the new album! Once we are further down the line with it I'll give you some updates!

"We have just heard from Burrn! magazine in Japan that JUDAS PRIEST have swept the polls!

The Best Group of the year: JUDAS PRIEST
The Best Album of the year: JUDAS PRIEST 'Angel Of Retribution'
The Best Live Performance in Japan: JUDAS PRIEST
The Best Album Cover: JUDAS PRIEST 'Angel Of Retribution'
The Best Vocalist of the year: Rob Halford/JUDAS PRIEST

"Needless to say we are all very happy about these results — they are fantastic! So a big thank you to JUDAS PRIEST's Japanese fans!!"

Hopefully this album will rock as hard as the last one. What's the next logical step after a 13-minute song about the Loch Ness Monster? I would say a 20-minute track about dinosaurs, but that's just me. Feel free to email your ideas to the T-Bomber.

New Whitesnake DVD Is Fucked

WHITESNAKE frontman David Coverdale has commented on the reports from some of the group's fans that some copies of WHITESNAKE's newly released "Live... In The Still of the Night" live DVD contain audio/video glitches. In a posting on the band's official message board, Coverdale wrote, "I did everything I could to make this a complete, functioning piece of work. The project I approved was not, I repeat, not, faulty in any way. You must do whatever is necessary to be happy with your purchase. Perhaps you can ask the store where you purchased it to change it for another copy that hopefully works to your complete satisfaction, or, as you say, ask for your money back. I promise you I am very saddened by all this. Until I hear from the distributors I can only express my disappointment alongside yours. From what I understand, the actual concert part of the DVD is working perfectly. it's the documentary that seems to be compromised on some of the DVDs. At this time I can only offer you my apologies. . . All I can say is bring it to the store or the distributors attention. I am doing what I can to find out what the problem is. It appears that it is not a problem for some, so, at this time I do not know how to answer you fully. I fulfilled all my contractual obligations to the production company as an artist and there was no problems when I signed off on the project. Something must have happened with the manufacturing end. Unfortunately, I have nothing to do with that, other than approving what I am given as the final production copy. This I did, and there were no problems, glitches, whatevers...I promise you I did not approve sending out anything that was faulty. I have never done this, and I would never knowingly do anything of the kind."

As previously reported, WHITESNAKE are tentatively scheduled to record several new songs for a planned collection of live material recorded over the course of the last three years. A video compilation featuring all the WHITESNAKE clips, the COVERDALE/PAGE videos and as-yet-undisclosed "not-so-well-known" clips is also in the works.

WHITESNAKE have just issued their first single-disc retrospective via Hip-O/Geffen/UMe. Entitled "The Definitive Collection", the CD spans nearly every studio album issued by WHITESNAKE, including their pre-U.S. fame LPs "Snakebite" (1978, with the band's first hit, "Ain't No Love in the Heart of the City"), "Lovehunter" (1979, with "Walking in the Shadow of the Blues" and "We Wish You Well"), "Ready An' Willing" (1980, with the title track) and "Come An' Get It" (1981, with "Don't Break My Heart Again").

"Live... In The Still of the Night" is the best name they could come up with? Lame. Should be a rocking DVD though. Whitesnake are somewhat wrongly lumped into the pop-metal genre. I've always thought they had a grittier and much less poppy sound than the likes of Bon Jovi and Def Leppard. Not that any of those bands don't rule, mind you.

T-Reccomended Album Of The Week: Little Birdy - Bigbiglove (1994)

Perth band Little Birdy have become a big hit for Franz-loving Triple J listeners down here in Oz over the last couple of years. This isn't without reason - Katie Steele (brother of the Sleepy Jackson's Luke Steele) is one of the most unique and talented artists in Australia today. As singer, guitarist and songwriter she is the engine behind this pop-rock outfit. Her songwriting and lyrics are good but it's her vocals, a cross between Kate Bush, PJ Harvey and Karen O, that either draw you in or push you away. Basically you either love or hate Katie's voice, there's no inbetween. I, obviously, love it, and I'm super pumped for their next album which will be released some time this year.

T-Mail

Well, my GnR Column the other day sure did cause a lot of controversy around here, and my mailbox proves it. My previous feedback record of 1 has been far surpassed. Here are a few of the thousands of emails received from T-Fans all over the world.

Dear Sir,

In regards to your Defense of Guns N' Roses column, I have but two words for you. Simply, thank you. For every bonehead and simpleton I've come in contact with (and will more than likely come in contact with again) that has attacked my faith in this wonderful band, I now have a comprehensive list of points to refute their idiotic claims. GNR is quite possibly one of the best bands of the late-21st century, and by reading your column, my love for them is completely reaffirmed. Thank you for doing them most honorable justice.

And as for Chinese Democracy...sure, I'll listen to it, but if Axl wants my cash, it better be absolutely mindblowing.

Thanks again and keep up the stellar work,
Brandon Yocum

No, thank you, Brandon, for your email made me feel noble and just - even moreso than usual. Everything I do is for my T-Fans and the more I can bring joy to, the better.

From James Applegate:

I completely agree with you. I dont know what the other guy was smoking, but if he was going to put the sex pistols ( Very over rated band in my opinion, got popular for the way they dressed, and having a controversal bass player) as untouchable, and not Guns N Roses ( who actually had talent, and staying power), I dont think his reviews should be taken seriously. Just my opinion though.

Not to mention that Axl and Slash could kick Johnny Rotten and Sid Vicious's asses any day of the week. Just saying.

Hey there, former 411 writer Dave Gagnon here.

I would like to say a huge fucking THANK YOU for your rebuttal about
one of my favorite bands of all times, Guns N' Roses.

I, too, just don't understand how 7 minutes is too long for a song.
That's what I loved so much about GNR, they had a great talent to
compose epic songs. How can this guy trash Coma? Axl is awesome in
this song, with his long rant driven by Slash's unique riffs.

I'm glad that someone stood up and called him on his bullshit.

And even though I sincerly think that it really won't be Guns N' Roses
without Slash, I can't wait to hear Chinese Democracy.

Great work.

Gags

I am not sure how anyone can trash Coma, Gagsie.. not sure at all.

From dedicated T-Fan, Matt Spayth:

You have some good points in the article, but calling rage against the machine a "shitty nu-metal band" is ridiculous. First of all, they are not nu-metal, and second, they are arguably one of the greatest band of the 90s. It's hard to take anything you take seriously with baseless comments like that.

It's hard to take anything you take seriously with baseless comments like "Rage are arguably one of the greatest band of the 90s". Taco, por favor.

From Josh:

Good column. That Stephen fellow wrote an awful column, glad to see someone call him on it. But Rage is nu-metal? weird. anyways, good stuff.

Well I've heard Rage called one of the pinoeering bands of nu-metal from time to time, so I just threw them in there. I'm not really bothered what you want to classify them as, I don't like 'em and that's that.

From my homedogg Justin Midyette:

Dude, thanks for the GNR defense. I'm asuming you guys send articles to one person before they're actually posted on the site. Here's a suggestion, If someone has to report on a band from the 80's, make sure they were old enough to experience the 80's. This guy is the same type that would report in 10 years that Nirvana wasn't that good and that Coldplay is the second coming of the Beatles. I could keep going but won't. Once again, Thanks for defending one of the most important bands in my life, and yes, one of their cd's is in my player now.

Awesome man. It's a pleasure to defend one of the most important bands of my life too. Rock on.

A heated email from the mysteriously named "HauntedHouse" (Mansion Fan, anyone?):

I want to thank you for putting that idiot that dissed GNR in his place. GNR is without a doubt the worlds greatest band and what that moron said was all propagonda and his opinion is shit. Even if you dont like their music you need to respect them they revolutionized music. If hes gonna write columns completly bashing a widely respected and loved band he shouldnt be on 411mania because frankly myself and a few others are getting fed up with him. Sure he can have his opinions but there is no reason to put down a great band like that in the way he did it. Once again I cannot thank you enough for defending the greatest band of all time and please tell that asshole what I said if you could.

Haha there you go. I'm sure the damn terrorist will stop spouting his propaganda now. Seriously, great email.

I'd like to thank everyone who emailed me. It's rare that columns on 411Music elicit such a response and all feedback is greatly appreciated and will be rewarded by showcasement (yes, that's a word) in my column. Thanks, gang.
