All You Cannot Live Without 02.13.06: Seriously, Read This
Posted by Ben Czajkowski on 02.13.2006

Dear Bono, retire. Sincerely, everyone who didn't win a Grammy.

P.S. Slipknot got one, too, but no one else because Bono horded them all for himself. That's not entirely true, but you catch my drift if you've read any of 411Mania's continuing Grammy coverage. Slipknot, who had been nominated six years in a row, finally snagged one for the track "Before I Forget."

By now, most of what I have to say about it is old news, since the ceremony was 5 days ago, but here's a recap of the winners and how well I fared picking them:

BEST NEW ARTIST
Predicted: Fall Out Boy
Winner: John Legend
RECORD OF THE YEAR
Predicted: Green Day
Winner: Green Day
ALTERNATIVE MUSIC ALBUM
Predicted: The White Stripes
Winner: The White Stripes
SOLO ROCK PERFORMANCE
Predicted: Bruce Springsteen
Winner: Bruce Springsteen
DUO OR GROUP WITH VOCAL
Predicted: Coldplay
Winner: U2
HARD ROCK
Predicted: System of a Down
Winner: System of a Down
ROCK SONG
Predicted: Coldplay
Winner: U2
ROCK ALBUM
Predicted: Coldplay
Winner: U2
MALE POP VOCAL PERFORMANCE
Predicted: Rob Thomas
Winner: Stevie Wonder
METAL SONG
Predicted: Slipknot
Winner: Slipknot
POP PERFORMANCE BY DUO OR GROUP W/ VOCAL
Predicted: The Killers
Winner: Maroon 5
POP COLLABORATION W/ VOCALS
Predicted: Gorillaz
Winner: Gorillaz Featuring De La Soul

Linkin Park also won a Grammy for their work with Jay-Z on "Numb/Encore." So, for my first attempt at picking Grammy's, I went 6 out of 12, which, I guess, really isn't bad considering that U2 was just handed Grammies for all of their service work that Bono has done. Save those starving kids, Bono!

My Sweet Little Bitches

Listen, we here in 411Music, we're like a family. And as all families do, they fight and argue. If you're a regular reader of all of the columns, you'll notice that, as well. I, personally, have no problem with anyone in this section, except Modzelewski for leaving us. Not even that. We're a solid bunch of brothers here, and despite everything we will continue to be. I think it's a bit silly to fight over GNR. I mean, GNR fights enough over themselves. We don't need to do it, too.

That will be the only touching moment I ever want to have here, in my column. Now, onto the individual stuff.

Jared McGuckin debases and defiles legend Trent Reznor in his column last week.

Tollah comes to the defense of Guns N Roses so that I don't have to, thank God. He's your GNR Man, Modzelewski, not me.

Stephan Mogan looks at Oasis and some more GNR. I'm kind of feeling left out at this point…Not really.

Michael Horvath is back, and he brings new track reviews for Yellowcard, Foo Fighters, and 30 Seconds to Mars.

Frank Estrada does all the Grammy Reviewing so I don't have to. Thank you, Frank!

Holy shit! MM is back, too! This has been an awesome week for the music section. He talks about everything music, from Nirvana to Fitty-cent.

Matt Shoemaker takes a look at all music Pennsylvania and its underground scene. He features A Life Once Lost, which is an awesome band from PA., and then two other lesser known ones.

Ian Wright looks at the indie stuff for us. It's good; check it out.

Brian Berry has more of his patented, sweet Radio-free column.

Phil Watts II looks at the new and upcoming music scene.

Rhett Walker is clearly this week's rant-tastic writer. I've lost my angry edge for the moment.

Tollah --hey, wait! He's already listed here…oh well. He had more to report, this time about lesbian Led Zeps. And a bunch of other stuff you should check.

The Low Down on the Underground

How about some Rob Zombie samplers to get this week's music column started! These tasty, little appetizers feature the first single from his newest album Educated Horses and is called "Foxy, Foxy" (WMA) (Real). The second little nibbler is "Let It All Bleed Out" (WMA) (Real) can also be heard online as well.

Now, how about a sexy main course. As expected, rumors about Tool's upcoming album are flying around the internet. On April 25th, the band is expected to release Elephtheria. Track listing for the album could include:

01. "Greed Lies"
02. "Psychiatrical"
03. "The Distant"
04. "LK"
05. "Venomous Souls"
06. "Karma"
07. "Lost City"
08. "24th Hour"
09. "Area Unlocale"

Nothing has been confirmed by the band or their label, Volcano Records. So far, these are the only reported and confirmed tour dates:

April 29th - 30th in Indio, CA @ Coachella Festival
June 2nd - 4th in Nurburgring, Germany @ Rock am Ring
June 3rd - 5th in Ibbenbuhren, Germany @ Pinkpop Festival
June 16th - 18th in Interlaken, Switzerland @ Greenfield Festival
June 29th - July 2nd in Roskilde, Denmark @ Roskilde Festival
July 4th - 8th in Kristiansand, Norway @ Quart Festival
August 25th - 27th in Reading, UK @ Reading Festival

I have to say, though…only 9 fucking tracks after how many years of waiting? I'm a bit pissed, but I'm still a happy camper.

Trying to slowly spread out the news about Lacuna Coil, the cover art for their upcoming record Karmacode has been circulating around the internet for a few weeks now. I thought it was about time to bring it to those of you who haven't taken the time to scope it yet. I think it's a pretty neat little ditty:

The album is due out in about 2 months or so, depending on which continent you currently occupy. The final track on Karmacode, "Enjoy the Silence", is a cover of the band Depeche Mode.

We are, apparently, not the only country with a Grammy's show that matters. In Flames recently won the Swedish government's Exportation Award at the Swedish Grammy's. This is the first metal band ever to win this award. Says the Swedish economy minister Thomas Östros, "Thanks to In Flames, Sweden now have a Metal band in the absolute world elite." Pick up your copy of their awesome new disc Come Clarity, in stores now. It debuted at number one on the Swedish and the Finnish national album charts. Pretty fucking impressive. Propelled by the red-hot single and video 'Take This Life', Come Clarity has taken over the #1 position on the CMJ Loud Rock and FMQB Metal Detector charts, as well as the CMJ Loud Rock Select Albums, Mediaguide Metal Specialty Albums and Mediaguide Metal Specialty Songs charts, respectively.

Wicked Wisdom, the five-piece band featuring actress Jada Pinkett Smith, wife of Will Smith, will release their self-titled debut album on February 21 via 100% Womon/Suburban Noize Records.

The self-titled track listing:

01. Yesterday Don't Mean
02. Something Inside of Me
03. One
04. Bleed All Over Me
05. Cruel Intentions
06. You Can't Handle
07. Forgiven
08. Set Me Free
09. Don't Hate Me
10. Reckoning

Wicked Wisdom are currently on the road opening for Sevendust and have more dates planned for late summer and fall. "This is passion," Jada told MTV.com. "I feel really blessed and grateful to have this opportunity." Yeah, well, we're really not blessed and grateful that you're putting out music, Jada. Go home and stick to acting and sucking on Will.

Good news for the metal community after reading about Wicked Wisdom. Roadrunner Records continues to put out quality mixed CDs for its fans. Roadrunner will be issuing the third segment of the MTV Headbangers Ball compilations. This year, it is entitled The Revenge.

The tracklisting was just announced this past week, and here is how it shapes up:

Disc 1:
01. Slipknot - Before I Forget (Exclusive, Unreleased Mix)
02. Korn - Liar
03. Iron Maiden - The Trooper (Live)
04. Hatebreed - To The Threshold (Previously Unreleased)
05. Mudvayne - Forget To Remember
06. Avenged Sevenfold - Burn It Down
07. HIM - Vampire Heart

18. Walls Of Jericho - A Trigger Full Of Promises (Previously Unreleased)
19. Kingdom of Sorrow - Buried In Black (Previously Unreleased)song
(Jamey Jasta with members of Crowbar, Down & Seemless)

Look for this in stores on April 11th, one day after my 21st birthday. Honestly, I have no idea how I feel about this disc yet. Clearly, the first one is much more commercial than the second, and the second is geared more toward the heavier side.

Seemless, the band featuring the former Killswitch Engage vocalist, has set a June 27th release date for their album. The tracklisting, tentatively, looks a little something like this sexy piece of wording:

01. In My Blood
02. Cast No Shadow
03. Numb
04. Eyes Of A Child
05. ........7
06. The Deep Below
07. Jaded
08. Parody
09. Maintain
10. Things Fall Apart

The album is still untitled.

One of the best bands 2006 is likely to see, Flyleaf recently posted their video for their bombastic single "I'm So Sick" to their website. The band is quickly climbing the charts, and, currently, they reside at #10 on the Heatseeker's Chart and at #5 on the Alternative New Artist Chart.

Linkin Park have chosen producer Rick Rubin (Red Hot Chili Peppers) to produce the follow up to 2003's Meteroa. In a posting, DJ Joe Hahn said, "Right now we're in the experimental phase of the writing process for our new record. There is no solid direction yet, we're trying to be as eclectic as we can for the moment and then we'll see what stands out the most out of all the music we write which will give us more of an identity to strive for." The currently untitled disc is expected to be released in late summer.

Are They Still Out There or Did They Finally Overdose?

The Juliana Theory disbanded. That's all I have to say about that.

Some bands never can just catch a break. This includes Minneapolis-band American Head Charge. This time drummer Chris Emery has announced his departure from the band in the following online emo-esque post on why he decided to part ways with AHC: "I choose to. I'm tired of watching drugs and alcohol destroy everyone around me including myself. I choose to live with more options. The party is over for me. See you on the other side. If you want to come with, I'll be cheering you on. This is my final post. Good bye and God SPEED.... " Emery left the band on February 10th, the night before the band was scheduled to play in their home town.

Thought I could go a week without mentioning the Smashing Pumpkins? Naw, especially not since they're my hottest piece of news. Recently, on AOLMusic, you could stream The Killer in You: A Tribute to the Smashing Pumpkins. I think that speaks for itself. This features such bands as Poison the Well, Eighteen Visions, Hopesfall, and more. The album also has an awesome version of the SP song "Zero" covered by newcomer 32 Leaves.

Still receiving much-deserved publicity, Trivium was announced to play alongside Metallica, Prodigy, and Bullet For My Valentine at this years Download Festival set to take place June 9-11 in Donnington, UK. Trivium are infamously connected with the festival after they were moved to the main stage last year after their stellar performance on the Roadrage Tour. More acts will be announced each week leading up to the event.

Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme will be taking some time away from the band to work on a side project with longtime collaborator Chris Goss. The band will be called the 5:15ers. The duo has no songs written at this time, has no idea what their sound will be like, has no album ideas, and will just be playing a few live shows. In fact, I have no idea why I'm even reporting this. QOTSA's recent record Lullabies to Paralyze, has seen moderate success.

While I'm on the subject of Josh Homme and QOTSA, Eagles of Death Metal (the other side project of vocalist Josh Homme) have set April 11th as the release date for their upcoming album Death by Sexy. A video for the track "I Want You So Hard (Boys Bad News)" is due shortly featuring Jack Black & Dave Grohl. This promises to be an amusing video.

The new Hoobastank album, Every Man For Himself, has received an April 18th release date. The first single "If I Were You" can now be heard on the band's website. No word yet on a tour to support the album, but I'll pretend you care and keep you updated.

Well, I can't say that I'm really that fucking surprised. Fuel recently officially parted ways with their long time lead singer Brad Scallions (from 1994 on, I do believe). "Brett's a great guy, a long time friend, and we wish him well" says guitar player Carl Bell, who remains as Fuel's songwriter and lyricist. "It was a very amicable split, we've had some great times and we will miss him." Hey, I recently heard the same thing about Amy Lee and Shaun Morgan. Fuel is currently underway with auditions for a new frontman and will begin recording their 4th record for release on Epic Records this year. Bell also had this to say, in a subsequent blog posting: "The album is written and we are just working now to get all the pieces together to put it out. Hey, change is always confusing and frustrating, but at the same time, can be very rewarding and exciting as well." This means, translated from music-speak to natural language, "Our band is probably going under and you'll find me flipping burgers or guesting on someone's next album."

After announcing his departure from Fuel, Brett Scallions will now focus on his new band, The X's, where he will handle bass and background vocal duties. Audio and tour dates are available on the bands MySpace page.

Shadows Fall are putting together a final release for Century Media entitled Fallout From the War, which will likely see a spring release through the label. They expect to have 11 tracks featured on their next release. The outing is set to include six newly recorded tracks, originally written during the sessions for The War Within album, plus some re-recorded b-sides and 3 covers when it sees a release this May. Currently the tentative list of tracks for the effort are as follows, in no order:

Mark Of The Squealer (Leeway cover)
December (Only Living Witness cover)
Teasin' Pleasin' (Dangerous Toys cover)
Deadworld
In Effigy
Will To Rebuild
Haunting Me Endlessly
Seize The Calm
Carpal Tunnel
Going, Going, Gone
This Is My Own

Furthermore, the band has nearly completed writing two songs for their upcoming Atlantic debut, which they will be recording later this year. So, look for lots of new music in the up-and-coming months from these guys.

Recently, the boys from Lostprophets checked in. They're busy in crappy Canada, but they did offer their fans a glimmer of hope. (As I write this, I'm listening to their cover of "Cry Me a River" for a good laugh. Oh, Justin Timberlake…) Jamie, of the band, had this to say: "Record is shaping up to be some of the best tunes we have ever written. We are all stoked at how it sounds and cant wait to get it out there." While he was in Hawaii a little while back, he dislocated his ribs. God only know how the hell you manage something like that. I'm sure someone out there can enlighten me.

As I Lay Dying has announced plans to re-release their first two recordings, both previously out on Pluto Records. Both Beneath the Encasing of Ashes, which was recorded two months after the band started, and their split EP songs, which were recorded a year later, will both be on one CD. No date for this has been set.

Aerosmith's Joey Kramer and Tom Hamilton, along with Buckcherry vocalist Josh Todd, are among the guest musicians featured on Run DMC's (Darryl McDaniels) long-in-the-works solo debut, Checks, Thugs and Rock'n'Roll, due on March 14 via RomenMpire. The CD/DVD set boasts collaborations with Ciara, Sarah McLachlan, Kid Rock and Doug E. Fresh, among others, and production by slain Run-D.M.C. member Jam Master Jay, according to Billboard.com. The first single from the new offering will be "Machine Gun", and the album will be followed by an international tour.

411Mania Music Presents: Making the Band

In another new segment of my column, I continue to look at the band, Monument the Ghost, who recently (in the last few months) decided that they didn't like most of the music that they saw in Pittsburgh, PA. So, they decided to put together their own metal band, the likes of which the sleepy, slowly-digressing town has never seen.

In the last few days, the band acquired guitarist Nathan Carmichael (no relation to the dirt biker guy), completing their line-up. So far, aside from Carmichael, MTG is Ben Zebrasky (vocals), brother Bob Zebrasky (guitar), Eric Ambrozic (bass), and Matt Hooper (drums).

This past week, I've had the lucky opportunity to give a listen to some of the instrumentals that they've recorded (sans vocals, if you're slow in following). Most of what I've listened to has been simply awesome and bloody raw. Some of the tracks, tentatively titled are "Intro", "Wayne Gretzky's Family Has a Gambling Problem", and "Colesseum No Vox", which will see Ben laying down vocals for it sometime this week. So far, they have about 6-8 tracks written, which they will use for a set list when they begin to play publicly, hopefully in April.

To further record their musical process, Bob has recorded a first in the series of what the band is calling "Monument the Ghost TV," which will later be feature on their DVD. They've posted the video on their MySpace page, and it's freakin' hilarious. Check it out: http://www.myspace.com/monumenttheghost.

This Week's Benjamin Czajkowski Stamp of Approval (BCSA) Goes To…

Shaun Morgan of Seether for finally dropping Amy Lee from Evanescence. Despite your reportedly amicable break up a few weeks ago, Shaun, deep down, we all know why you split up. Amy's a self-centered bitch and probably wouldn't go down on you. I'd break up with her, too, but not for that. Maybe it's because you got tired of her ever-so-emo personality or her lack of fashion sense. Maybe you got your head out of your own ass and you heard her talk. Or even sing. Without being electronically enhanced, which I can say, doesn't cover the rest of her. Shaun, here's a piece of advice: don't mix business and pleasure anymore. I'm sure you've realized this by now, but bringing home your work (music) and trying to make it your life (Amy) just doesn't cut it. Trust me. I tried dating a writer once (my work), and she just used me to further her protagonist's struggle in the book she was writing. So, Shaun, if we've learned anything, learn this: stick to Seether and find something completely unrelated to fuck every night: groupies, hookers, a pillow, whatever works for you and keeps you off and out of Amy and any musical duet with It. And that's the BCSA.

The Stuff I Can't Put Down (Like Scott Weiland and His Heroin)

This week was a mellow week for me, so I was listening to a lot of mellow stuff.

5. Beth Orton – Comfort of Strangers
4. Pink – Try This
3. Collective Soul - Home
2. Underworld: Evolution – OST
1. 32 Leaves – Welcome to the Fall

It's A Problem to Just Quit, So I'll End With This

So, yeah, this week's column was packed full of good stuff. I hope you all have a good week. Please, drop me a line and let me know what you think of the column. Also, I changed (heavily) my myspace page, and I think it looks fucking awesome. Check it out. Until next time: peace, love, a little pessimism and some Coke… –BC
