The Stuff You Haven't Heard 05.31.06

Three great metal bands for you to check out this week.
Well, it's a bit late, but I suppose getting this out goes along with the whole "better late than never" saying. I now am an official high school graduate. It feels damn good. I've been doing my far share of working and partying, so I've been exhausted on both ends.
This week, I did some searching for some heavy metal bands that not many people may have heard of. These three bands have caught my ear over the past few months, whether I heard about them through a friend or saw them on TV. These bands are absolutely awesome, so I figured that you, the people, needed to hear them.
No mail. As usual.
And since he plugs my column all the time, I'm gonna return the favor to him. Go read All You Cannot Live Without, written by possibly one of my favorite columnists on this site, Ben Czajkowski. And a brief note to him, I know the song that the line is from, the title of your column gave it away in a heartbeat, but I can't figure out the movie, and I don't wanna look it up just yet. And thanks for all the support.
And awaaaaay we go.
First up this week is Through The Eyes Of The Dead. Hailing from South Carolina, this band is about as extreme as metal gets. Fast paced, loud, and angry, this is pretty much quintessential metal. Although the vocals are very incoherent and kind of faded into the music, what you can understand will blow you away. The guitars are also excellent here, played at a blinding speed most of the time. But, the thing that will amaze most people out of all the things going on is the drums. The drummer for TTEOTD does some sick, sick stuff on the set. While his hands are fast, and he can pull off some great fills with just his hands, his feet are incredibly fast. On the breakdown for the song Two Inches From A Main Artery his feet hit blinding speeds, more than double what the guitars are doing in the song. Everything just flows together perfectly with this band. The songs seem to take interesting turns in timing, fluctuating between common time and accelerated timing. This band is seriously something you gotta check out if you're a fan of heavy metal. I believe the band is/was on tour with God Forbid, as well.

Next up, is If Hope Dies. This band really surprised me when I saw the video for their single Anthem For The Unemployable on Headbanger's Ball. However, once I listened to more of their material, I grew to like them even more that I did after that first video. Their music is fast, aggressive, and guttural. The vocals are very low, and very incoherent. (There seems to be a trend forming here). The guitars are nicely done, as are the drums. Musically, this band isn't much to shout about. They're just a really good overall band.

Finally, a band introduced to me by the guitarist of my own band, Beneath The Sky. This band continues the pattern of the incoherent vocals, but this singer's vocals are more screams than low, guttural growls, but it works very well. Again, the drums are a very high point here. This drummer's feet are great, working both very fast and very slow. The guitars are also great, turning out some really crunchy riffs, along with some nice technical ones as well. This is seriously a band to keep an eye on. They should be huge if they keep up this work.
