The Slightly Slanted Music News Report 06.07.06

Pearl Jam tells stories no one wants to hear, Twister Sister is back in time for the holidays, Peter Steele on VH1, and more inside! If that dosen't make you click the link, I don't know what will...God, I hate slow news weeks.
Hello my little chickadees and welcome to another picture filled, all style no substance Slightly Slanted Music News Report. Not much by way of introduction this week, aside from an incredibly disappointing season finale of The Sopranos. For those of you who did not see it, I'm not going to give anything away, but it was a pretty lackluster end to a fairly lackluster season. Tony getting shot in the season opener was a hellava way to kick things off, but it just fell apart after that. The last eight that are due to be shown in January better be really fucking good. On to the news….
Sometimes The News Just Writes Itself, But Most Of The Time I Have To Type It Out
The News: Former American Idol contestant Chris Daughtry has turned down Fuel's offer to replace signer Brett Scallions. Fuel publicly and privately offered the job the Daughtry weeks ago but the Idol contestant never gave a definitive answer until now.
The Slant: What a fucking idiot. If this Daughtry character thinks he's going to make anything of himself on his own he is sorely mistaken. For Christ sakes, he lost American Idol, its not like he won or was even a runner up. He just got offered his one big chance in the music business and he turned it down, probably because Fuel is shitty band, but nevertheless, he blew it.
The News: Masked heavy metal band Slipknot have announced they will begin working on a new album by the end of the year. Guitarist Mick Thompson told Billboard magazine, "We're going to start getting back together and working on stuff. The core that writes the songs tend to get together — it's not as easy to work out stuff when you've got nine people standing in the same room. I would say we'll start working within the next few months. I've talked to [Slipknot bassist] Paul [Gray] a few times. Very slowly, no pressure."
The band is currently set to release a follow up DVD to the largely successful Disasterpieces. "It's going to be different than our last one," Thomson said. "Our last one mostly focused on the concert, and this one is going to have a lot more personal stuff on it. You get to see more stupid shit. There'll be some music and stuff, but you're getting to see what our days our like. It should be a lot more fun."
The Slant: Now, does Thompson have to talk to Paul Grey very slowly because he's retarded? I kid, I kid. New Slipknot isn't band news at all, in my opinion. As far as the DVD is concerned, I think this exactly what the Slipknot fans wanted all along. I think people want to see the band interacting with each other and doing "stupid shit". I'll probably check it out just out of curiosity.
The News: Pearl Jam has just finished filming an episode of VH1 Storytellers in New York City this week. The performance features the following songs:
Better Man
Unemployable
World Wide Suicide
Gone
Sleight Of Hand
Army Reserve
Insignificance
Alive
Here's to The State of Mississippi
Life Wasted
The episode is et to air on July 1st.
The Slant: I like the Storytellers series, for me it's a lot like VH1's Behind The Music, I'll watch it on anyone. In fact, I'm surprised it took this long for Pearl Jam to get involved. Anyway, the show itself features a pretty weak setlist. I'm not a big PJ fan but their first three albums were damn good and they were the most well received. With that said, wouldn't it stand to reason that the majority of the songs played should songs people want to know more about?
The News: It's been an on again-off again week for fans of the horror movie franchise Halloween and Rob Zombie. News broke in early in the week, that Zombie was set to direct the latest installment in the 20 year old movie series. The next day, Zombie released a statement that he was not, in fact, going to be involved in Halloween 9. Days after that, it was announced that Rob Zombie IS going to write, direct, produce and become the music supervisor on the next Halloween movie.
Rob Zombie stated, "I am not making 'Halloween 9'. That series is done, complete, over. But what I am doing is starting totally from scratch. Call it a remake, an update, a re-imagining or whatever, but one thing that [is] for sure is this is a whole new start — a new beginning with no connection to the other series. That is exactly why the project appeals to me. I can take it and run with it."
Before accepting the job, Zombie told Variety he'd reached out to director of the original Halloween movie, John Carpenter, seeking his blessing.
"He said, 'Go for it, Rob. Make it your own.' And that's exactly what I intend to do. Over 25 years and a lot of movies, a very scary character became something of a Halloween cliché, with Michael Myers dolls that play the Halloween music when you press their stomachs. By the end of the sequel cycle, there was little connection to the original. I take that film very seriously, and I want to make it terrifying again."
The film is set for release in October 2007.
The Slant: I know it may be more "movie" news, but it has music elements to it. This should turn out to be interesting. I agree with Zombie, as a huge fan of the horror genre, the Halloween movies have gotten progressively more unwatchable as they went on.
The News: Type O Negative frontman Peter Steele is reported as one of the celebrities to take part in VH1's Surreal Life. The show features a select group of out-of-the-spotlight celebrities and films them as they live together in a mansion in the Hollywood Hills.
The Slant: I get such pleasure from a fall from grace. Suck it Steele!
The News: 80's band Twister Sister have signed to record label, Razor & Tie, to release a final CD. The CD, of all things, will be a Christmas album. The record will feature all the Christmas standards in heavy metal fashion.
The Slant: Now, I like 80's metal just as much as the next guy, maybe even more but as far as a Twister Sister Christmas CD…Fuck Yes! I will at the CD store first thing in the morning the day that gem is released. I've met lead signer Dee Snider a few years ago in Orlando, when he and his family were staying at the Hard Rock Hotel just a 3 rooms away from mine. He was such nice guy, cool as shit. It's funny, I met him in Orlando, but he lives only a half an hour away from me in New York.
Now that I've named dropped a little, isn't he Jewish?

I love writing for 411 but it really sucks when I do the news and there's no real news to report on. That's it for me this week, drop me a line if you want, otherwise, go fuck yourself.
