The Sentence 09.20.06: ______ Is The Album That Should Be Issued To Every Freshman
Posted by Frank Estrada on 09.20.2006
Back with a new column just in time for all you just starting school; fill in the blank: ______ is the album that should be issued to every freshman entering college.
Frank Estrada, former writer of Tale of the Tape and Feel Good Hit of the Summer, here to bring you a new interactive column called The Sentence. What I bring here is a column based on sentence and hopefully all will comment on. In the future I open this column to all my readers and fellow columnists to fill in the blanks as well and I will post them. Makes sense? Well it will when you read on.
THIS WEEK THE SENTENCE: ______ is the album that should be issued to every freshman entering college.
I love this question. This could be anything, especially since music changes everyday. Which is the album every freshman should have? Thinking back to my college days I encountered a lot of music, was introduced to a lot of music and found a lot of music being a college d.j. I remember going to parties, where you know you are going to hear Margaritaville by Jimmy Buffett, Friends In Low Places by the Garth, and whatever was in the clubs or the radio at the time. But I am going to have to fill in the blank with the album that should be in every student's arsenal.
THE ANSWER: BOB MARLEY LEGEND is the album that should be issued to every freshman entering college.
This is the album that all colleges and universities should require all students to buy along with their other fees. This is not just a stoner album. This is not just a drinking album. This is not just a protest album. This is not just a great lets have sex album. This is all that and more. This is an album, when the first note hits, everyone sits back and grooves with. There are songs you just have to sing along to. I was listening to this last night and it is a very simple album yet it is so complex. If you listen to his words and realize what he was saying, you can argue these lyrics wouldn't make it today. He was talking about the issues of the day, he was talking about love conquering all, and he was talking about religion. Yea U2 does the same, but while U2 continue to make great albums, with similar issues, they have yet to put out an album that is this complex, this cool by all people, that simple. This is counting their greatest hits albums too, because Legend is a greatest hits album. Let's put it this way. There are other Bob Marley collections you can buy. But this one has some perfect magical quality to it. This song lineup transcends generations and boundaries.
In the dorm, or the apartment or any backyard, you can throw this on and you instantly get a vibe. Got a girl with you and you want to chill, here you go. Got your buddies ready to smoke out, take off your Jack Johnson and put this on. Getting ready to protest with your brothers and sisters against the administration, get up stand up. Need some calm music while you study for midterms? Marley is your man. Do you catch my drift? See what I'm saying here? Can Coldplay do this? No. G Love? No.
Key Tracks. Is This Love, No Woman No Cry, Could You Be Loved, Three Little Birds, Redemption Song.
Honorable Mention:
Here on The Sentence I am not sure if I will always have an honorable mention, but today I do: Steve Miller Band Greatest Hits is an album that should be issued to every freshman entering college.
I only bring this up because a lot of parties I went to seemed to have this on, and not for the Joker either. This is a great album for pounding beers with your buddies. Its good background music before the d.j gets there. You have Fly Like an Eagle, Rock N' Me, Take the Money and Run, among others. Oh yea the Joker. While this isn't Bob Marley's Legend at all, this cd will help your social life.
Well that is it this week kids, what did you think? What albums do you think all college students should be issued? Maybe you agree with me and want to tell me. Maybe you have a better on I over looked? Like the idea of The Sentence? Me too. Here are some future sentences I am thinking about, and if you want to fill it out and send it to me or come up with your own, I will defiantly give you credit on a future column. Here is what I'm thinking of:
1) I hate ________'s fans, they are such posers.
2) Why did I buy_______, when I only use this cd as a coaster?
3) I bought_________, because it was my girlfriend's idea.
4) I'm a music snob because_________/I hate music snob's because___________
