Dancing About Architecture 04.10.07
Posted by Ian Wright on 04.10.2007

The bit at the start

Hello, if you're reading this now either you've not overdosed on chocolate in the past couple of days, or you're older than 12. Easter always struck me as a pointless holiday, ok if you dig Jesus then it's a big deal but the manner in which it's celebrated always struck me as somewhat lame. I'm with Bill Hicks, Lincoln Logs in a sock drawer would have been better.

Anyway here in Ireland Easter for the Godless and those who rationalise away their not going to Church as a protest against organised religion means a 4 day weekend and for me personally a chance to get this column finished on Monday afternoon so I can spend the evening with my glockenspiel.

Little babies, LET'S GO!

Beg, borrow, buy, steal or download this album.

Jeff Buckley - Live Sin é

Gorgeous pre-Grace live recordings from a Manhattan café.

The Dancing About Architecture MySpace band of the week.

Cap Pas Cap

Danceable post-punk from Dublin 4-piece. Warning, may include cow-bell.

Recommended song: Said Say It.

You news, you lose

Oh please no.

Despite being wrongly touted as the Beatles finest work (hello, Revolver!!!) Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band does stand out as one of the most significant albums of the last century and we are fast approaching the 40th anniversary of its release, June 1st to be precise.

On June 2nd BBC Radio 2 will be broadcasting a probably awful tribute to the album which sees 13 bands (half of which have been announced and all are dreadful) covering material from the album. All the bands will use the Beatles' original recording equipment and the project will be overseen by Beatle engineer Geoff Emerick.
The acts announced thus far are Oasis, the Killers, Kaiser Chiefs, Travis, James Morrison, the Fratellis and Razorlight. 7 completely bog standard and boring acts covering one of the most innovative bands ever, that sounds like a really good idea.

I'm not a huge Beatles fan and shouldn't really care about such matters but even I find this idea offensive.

"Homer Simpson, smiling politely"

James Iha has said that he most certainly won't be a part of the upcoming Smashing Pumpkins reunion but rather is focussing his attention on his next solo record and running Scratchie records which he heads with Adam Schlesinger of Fountains Of Wayne. Speaking to Rolling Stone's Rock n' Roll Daily blog he said "I'm not part of the current Smashing Pumpkins album or tour. I haven't spoken to Billy [Corgan] in years."

So this means that of the classic Pumpkins lineup only Billy Corgan and Jimmy Chamberlain are in the reunited band with no other members filling in the blanks which leads me to suspect that the upcoming Zeitgeist album will feature Chamberlain on drums and Corgan playing everything else and the touring band will probably be them and some session players.

Which to me doesn't really sound like the Smashing Pumpkins, it sounds like Zwan, or Billy Corgan's solo project. It's not the pumpkins without at least 3 of the 4 as far as I'm concerned and as Darcy seems to have disappeared off the face of the earth Iha would have had to have been the one to return.

At least he's not trying to get back together with Dave, Matt and Pez.

British Summer festival news.

If you're Scottish and don't fancy heading over to T in the Park (although the lineup does look pretty good this year) then you've got an alternative in Glasgow's Indian Summer Festival in Victoria Park on July 14-15.

Details are kinda sketchy at the moment with organisers saying that there'll be "at least" 3 stages but despite that the bands/DJs announced to perform thus far are fairly appealing with the Flaming Lips, the Rapture, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Annuals, Optimo, and Prins Thomas all pencilled in. Optimo will also curate their own area of the festival.

Furthur south the second annual Latitude Festival on the weekend of July 12-15 has one of the best lineups of the summer and will feature Arcade Fire, Wilco, the Good, the Bad & the Queen, the Rapture, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Jarvis Cocker, CSS, the National, Explosions in the Sky, Patrick Wolf, Midlake, the Magic Numbers, Gotan Project and Damien Rice as well as theatre, comedy, film, poetry, literary events, and children's activities.

This screaming silence.

The Knife have revealed details of their in no way cashing in super-dooper reissue of last year's Silent Shout which is due out on May 8th. The reissue will naturally feature the original album as well as a bonus disc of multimedia content. All in all it's a pretty good package and if you don't have the album already then it'd be worth picking this up.

Iron and Wine's upcoming third album The Shepherds Dog will be preceded by the single "Boy With A Coin" on July 10th via Sub Pop. The single will feature a single edit of the song as well as two other songs from the album sessions.

Odds on that all the songs will be gentle and lovely.

ATP ATP ATP.

OK, so I'm now officially in the "I wish I was going to this" camp. The latest bands to be added to the ATP vs. The Fans fest at Butlins Minehead in the south of England next month are Slint, Isis, Cornelius, Les Savy Fav, Wilco, Yo La Tengo, the Go! Team, the Thermals, Daniel Johnston, Clinic, Okkervil River, Annuals, Trans Am, Two Gallants, and Bat for Lashes.

All this talk of the Fan curated event shouldn't take away attention to the Dirty 3 curated festival taking place a couple of weeks previously which just had Suicide's Alan Vega, Einsturzende Neubauten, White Magic, Sally Timms, We Ragazzi, and Yann Tiersen added to the bill.

Writing under the influence

Without which this column would not have been possible:

Talk Radio
Joanna Newsom and The Ys Street Band.
The National – Boxer
TV On The Radio – Young Liars EP
My Bloody Valentine – Glider EP

The bit at the end

The more and more I hear it the more and more I think that Boxer is my favourite album of the year to date. It's marvellous.

That new Joanna Newsom EP, not so nuts on the first track but the other two are great. I'm seeing her on Saturday and am now very excited about it.

Does Jesus really care if Zach Johnson wins a golf tournament? I doubt it somehow.

I wasn't listening to it while writing the column this week but I have given the Handsome Furs album Plague Park a lot of listening time in the past week. I'm really liking it a lot, it's very nasty and dirty sounding and it makes me really optimistic for the next Wolf Parade record after hearing what Boeckner and Krug have been doing away from each other over the course of the past year.
