Joanna Newsom live thoughts, Sonic Youth, Pitchfest, the greatest show on earth, Caribou, The Flaming Lips, Ryan Adams.
The bit at the start
3 years.
That's how long I've been waiting to see Joanna Newsom play her own gig after I started listening to The Milk-Eyed Mender 2 weeks after her only Irish previous date. I don't really want to think about seeing her at ATP last year considering the levels of fury that it elicited from me due to the people around me NOT SHUTTING THEIR ANNOYING BRAYING FUCKING MOUTHS. It was too dark to see if anyone the pricks had goatees but in my head they all did, especially the woman.
Sorry, started a rant there, happy thought time.
I went to see her play in the Olympia in Dublin on Saturday. Absolutely worth the wait. She played for the best part of 2 hours and aside from the brilliance of the material and performance she was completely charming (no winsomeness or annoying pixyish bullshit) and surprisingly funny ("How many hippies does it take to screw in a light bulb? Hippies don't screw in light bulbs they screw in dirty sleeping bags.") Whoever had "1 song in" in the "when will an idiot shout ‘I love you Joanna' at her" pool would have cleaned up by the way. She looks like she's got Bell's Palsy when she sings.
Less pleasant was Amusement Parks On Fire the night before. I really liked the first album but hadn't heard anything from the follow up. If I had then I might not have bothered going along, the only good songs were the 3 I knew and the only other thing that approached a highlight was a pretty cool wall of feedback to end the main set.
But I don't want to be mean so...
Beg, borrow, buy, steal or download this album.
Amusement Parks On Fire – Amusement Parks On Fire.
The best nu-shoegaze album I know of. Get Loveless first.
The Dancing About Architecture MySpace band of the week.
The greatest New England indie-rock of the 80's. Yes, that means better than the Pixies and Dinosaur Jr.
Recommended song: None of my favourite songs are on their MySpace, probably "That's How I Escaped My Certain Fate".
You news, you lose
I'm too old for Teenage Riots but that's not really all that important.
Widely regarded (it's in the library of congress for goodness sake) as their finest recorded work (though my feet are planted in the Dirty camp) Sonic Youth's Daydream Nation will be 20 next year. The band are obviously not sick to death of the record because they are planning on performing it in it's entirely live at various venues and festivals around the world in the coming months . They've also been spending time going through their old tapes from that era in preparation for the Deluxe Edition of the album which is due out on June 12th and it looks as though they've put together a fantastic package featuring bonus demos, rare covers, live versions of every song on the record and brand new photos and liner notes.
Disc 1 unsurprisingly features the original album but with an extra track, an early demo version of "Eric's Trip" while disc 2 collects the live versions which were recorded on the tour in support of the album as well as covers by The Beatles, Neil Young, Captain Beefheart and Mudhoney.

OMG LOLZER BEST TOUR EVER WTF
Long time (or anyone who's been keeping tabs on the column for about at month) readers will be familiar with my adoration for both Arcade Fire and The National (once again, I can't stress how brilliant Boxer is). So imagine the massive feelings of jealousy I had towards the people of New York, Atlanta, Ashville, Washington and Philadelphia when it was announced last week that the former had invited the latter to open for them in those cities on their upcoming tour. Other acts invited along on the trek are The Handsome Furs (whose upcoming Plague Park I'm also quite taken with) Electrolane and St. Vincent; no disrespect to those acts but their mothers and sisters are all whores but I know which dates I'd rather be at.
The tour dates are support are as follows:
04/26 San Diego, CA - Spreckels Theatre - TBD
05/01 Atlanta, GA - Civic Center - The National
05/02 Asheville, NC - Thomas Wolfe Auditorium - The National
05/04 Washington, DC - DAR Constitution Hall - The National
05/05 Philadelphia, PA - Tower Theatre - The National
05/07 New York, NY - The United Palace - The National

05/10 Boston, MA - Orpheum Theatre - TBD
05/12 Montreal, Quebec - Arena Maurice Richard - St. Vincent
05/13 Montreal, Quebec - Arena Maurice Richard - St. Vincent
05/15 Toronto, Ontario - Massey Hall - Handsome Furs
05/16 Toronto, Ontario - Massey Hall - Handsome Furs
05/18 Chicago, IL - Chicago Theatre - St. Vincent
05/19 Chicago, IL - Chicago Theatre - Electrelane

In related Arcade Fire news Win Butler had surgery for the sinus problems which called a halt to the band's European tour last month and is planning to try to start singing again this week. He also turned 27 last Saturday so happy birthday Win.
Once again, fuck you Handsome Dan.
Dan Snaith is set to release his second album under the Caribou name this August entitled Andorra. Written, recorded, produced and whatevered almost entirely by Snaith (save for a guest vocal spot from Jeremy Greenspan of Junior Boys) the album will be out in Europe on City Slang and in North America on Merge.

My dreams of Ryan Adams walking on stage and quoting "This Is Spinal Tap" at length have been shattered because the organisers of the Salsisbury International Arts Festival have cancelled his planned gig at Stonehenge (yes, that one) on June 5th due to fears that too many people would show up without tickets. The gig won't even be moved to a more appropriate location with the NME reporting that, "a suitable alternative site cannot be found, and Adams is no longer taking part in the festival."
Well shit.
Pitchfork Festival finally stops getting better.
My ever increasing levels of seething jealously towards the residents of Chicago abated somewhat last week when the latest round of new performers at this year's Pitchfork Fest in Union Park were announced. Deerhunter, Menomena, Klaxons, Fujiya and Miyagi, Oxford Collapse, Beach House, Dan Deacon and Craig Taborn's Junk Magic have all joined the bill; the good news (for me) is that I'm a fan of none of them so for this week at least there's I'm not going "arrrgghh, I wish I lived in Chicago."
The bill at the minute now looks like this ...
Friday, July 13:
Sonic Youth performs Daydream Nation
Saturday, July 14:
Cat Power and Dirty Delta Blues
Clipse
Iron and Wine
Girl Talk
Grizzly Bear
Battles
Fujiya & Miyagi
Oxford Collapse
Dan Deacon
Beach House
Professor Murder
Ken Vandermark's Powerhouse Sound
Sunday, July 15:
New Pornographers
Stephen Malkmus
De La Soul
Of Montreal
Jamie Lidell
Menomena
Klaxons
The Ponys
Deerhunter
Craig Taborn's Junk Magic
If you can you should go to these gigs.
Sonic Youth.

Joanna Newsom – Walnut Whales EP
The bit at the end
Have I mentioned how much I love Eliot Smith recently? No? Well I'm a big Eliot kick right now, I'm finding it hard to get either/or off my stereo.
There's been a whole bunch of fabulous albums released already this year, 2007 is shaping up to be the best year for music since 2007.
