Cat Power live thoughts, tour cancellations, Smashing Pumpkins robbed, New Okkervil River.
The bit at the start
Oh man I was so disappointed coming home from Cat Power on Thursday night. I'm a big fan of Chan Marshall but I've never seen her play live throughout the unpredictable nutjob years and had been led to believe that since the release of The Greatest last year she'd been playing more consistently good gigs.
The people who had said that were fucking liars.
The best part of Cat Power's music is her voice and it really should be the centrepiece of any performance by her. That's pretty hard when her backing band consists of a keyboardist who plays his awfully hokey "Like A Rolling Stone is the only song I listen to" parts far too loud. The same goes for Judah Bauer from The Blues Explosion who's got all the chops any guitarist could want but who once again drowned out Chan's voice. Jim White(from the Dirty Three)'s drumming was pretty great though.
That being said she's oddly fidgety on stage and as a result is strangely compelling to watch.
Beg, borrow, buy, steal or download this album.
Elliott Smith – New Moon.
Brand new archival release, he's still so terribly missed.

On the subject of cancelled gigs.
If family illness isn't a good enough excuse for you to cancel shows then how about getting busted by the fuzz? That's the reason that CocoRosie gave for cancelling a number of shows recently, although they didn't go into too many details about the whole affair simply posting the following on their MySpace...
"dear loves
we are so sorry to announce that we cannot play the rest of the US tour dates
the band got arrested, thats all i can say
we love you all
we are playing a free show in New York on may 19th
please come if you can
we are crying
say a prayer for our band
love
Sierra and Bianca
later..."

Robbing Pumpkins.
Last week some hooligans, (yes that's the term I'm using) broke into the Smashing Pumpkins' Chicago rehearsal space and stole a number of photograph's connected to the band's upcoming comeback album Zeitgeist. The photos were uploaded to the NetPhoria Pumpkins fansite. The pictures featured images of ...
-- Paris Hilton posing in front of a backdrop of a bomb exploding
-- The Grim Reaper standing at a podium emblazoned with the Seal of the President of the United States, in front of a black and white Smashing Pumpkins flag
-- A person in a business suit wearing a devil mask and being crucified
-- Five blonde children saluting
-- Close-up of Billy Corgan in a hoodie
-- Billy Corgan in a hoodie, standing next to a woman with no shirt on
There's no getting away from Paris these days is there?
The thieves have since been apprehended and a statement from the band's management says, "Management for the Smashing Pumpkins confirms that the band's rehearsal studio in Chicago was burglarized last week.
"The two people who are now in jail illegally gained access to the band's private space and stole various items belonging to them over the course of several hours while the band had left for the evening.
"The band's management says the group feels their rights have been violated by this crime and will always pursue their rights and the law to protect their property and the safety of themselves, their families and their fans."
Regarding the pictures themselves the statement goes on to say, "the photos are stolen goods and anyone who posts them will have to take them down."
Netphoria removed the photos and issued their own statement which said, "What this person did amounts to theft and band takes this very seriously as does Netphoria. I know everyone here is hungry for more information on the new album but this is not the way to go about it. Nobody here should condone or be supportive of the actions this individual took...The band requested the stolen pictures be removed and I believe they are well within their right to do so..."
Best news in forever.
Get ready to adopt some Stage Names for that is the title of Okkervil River's forthcoming album and the follow up to the brilliant Black Sheep Boy due out on the Jagjaguwar label on August 7th.
The 9 track album was recorded in the band's home town of Austin with Brian Beattie who recorded the band's previous 2 albums. Jim Eno of Spoon mixed the album and the artwork (below) was done by long time collaborator William Schaff.

Things have been pretty quiet on the Mirah front with only a remix album to show since she released 2004's C'Mon Miracle but August 7th (wow, that's gonna be a great day for releases) see her, along with Spectratone International and Kyle Hanson of Black Cat Orchestra will release Share This Place: Stories And Observations.
The album, which was inspired by the work of French entomologist Jean Henri Fabre, explores the unusual subject matter of the lives of insects and was produced by Nirvana, Low and Beat Happening knob twiddler Steve Fisk and Mount Eerie of Phil Elvrum.
The project is intended to be part of a multi-media experience as the album is a companion piece to 12 animated shorts by Britta Johnson. The film Credo Cigalia is included with the CD.
