Cat Power is working on a sequel to her 2000 Covers Record which is due out on Matador in January.
Writing on her MySpace page last week Chan Marshall revealed that the album will be mixed this week with Stuart Sikes in Dallas and that she has "24 covers to choose from. With so many covers, tryin' to decide if I should release COVERS RECORD 2 VOL. 2 ???"
The album has been in production since late last year and if it's half as special as the last one then it should be really good. If it sounds like she and her band did when I saw them a few months back it could be a giant mess with too much organ.

Tracklisting:

02 Yeah Yeah Yeahs - "Cheated Hearts"
03 Sonic Youth - "Do You Believe in Rapture?"
04 The Shins - "Phantom Limb"
05 Spoon - "The Underdog"
06 Bright Eyes - "Four Winds"
07 Cat Power - "Lived in Bars"
08 Neko Case - "Hold On, Hold On"
09 Of Montreal - "Heimdalsgate Like a Promethean Curse"
10 Deerhoof - "The Perfect Me"
11 The Hold Steady - "Chips Ahoy!"
12 Cold War Kids - "Hang Me Up to Dry"
13 Ted Leo and the Pharmacists - "Colleen"
14 M. Ward - "Chinese Translation"
15 Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - "Satan Said Dance"
For the most part it's a pretty O.C. indie mixtape and the most out there thing on it is the Deerhoof (who I insist should be experienced live rather than on record) track but there's some good stuff there and anything that gives more exposure to Ted Leo is a good thing. I really hate the Clap Your Hands Say Yeah song though.
Wanker.
The guardian ran a piece on the new wave of shoegaze a couple of weeks ago and in it Alan McGee was interviewed about the original shoegaze band's because as the head of Creation he put out lots of it. In it he said it was "Bloody nonsense. My Bloody Valentine were my comedy band. Ride were different - they were a rock band, really, a fantastic rock band - but My Bloody Valentine were a joke, my way of seeing how far I could push hype."
Douchbag.
Anyway, it's an interesting enough piece and worth reading. Asobu Seksu still don't do much for me.
The return of the Doherty watch.
Ex-libertine/current Babyshambles singer Pete Doherty is due in court today for sentencing for his latest drugs charge.
Doherty pleaded guilty to possession of class A drugs on July 3rd after he was stopped by police in London on May 5th. It's the latest in a long line of busts for Doherty who in the past has pled guilty to possession of crack, heroin, cannabis and ketamine and also has 2 driving offences on his record. Additionally he faces further charges of failing to appear in court without reasonable excuse after he was late for the initial hearing.
Since that hearing Doherty has gone back into rehab in Yorkshire as per the courts instruction.
A couple of years ago when I started writing this column I used to really lay into Doherty on a regular basis, mainly because I thought he was marginally talented and only received publicity due to his lifestyle. I still think that but he's not thrust into my face by the NME as regularly so I don't find him as annoying these days.
Pay me my money you fucker.
Ex Marilyn Manson keyboardist Stephen Bier (a.k.a. Madonna Wayne Gacy) is suing his former boss for over $10,000,000.
Bier claims that he was promised a share of he band's earnings rather than merely being an employee and is entitled to money that Manson instead spent on a house, drug treatment and collecting Nazi paraphernalia. However Manson has said that the claims are "really ridiculous," adding, "It just seems like another ex-band member suing me and trying to assassinate my personality as a means to financial gain."
The suit claims that Bier was told that the band was not making much money despite Manson spending £980,000 on a house as well as "African masks made of human skin, the full skeleton of a four-year-old Chinese girl and the full skeleton of a 17th Century male in a wheelchair," and coat hangers used by Adolf Hitler.
During that time, Biers claimed, Manson as well as the band's lawyers and business managers cut off his salary and band credit cards and also refused to pay his medical expenses for work related problems.
The suit states, "Because of Manson and others' fraudulent conduct, Bier has spent almost two decades for working for one of the world's most popular rock bands that has made millions of dollars in profit and now has almost nothing to show for it."
However Manson told the BBC "The fact that he's claming that I've treated him unfairly financially is really ridiculous. And I would never spend my money on a Chinese girl skeleton. That would be crossing the line."
"It's a Chinese boy, for the record."
It's quite a slow news week.
