Dancing About Architecture 08.14.07

Festivals, festivals, festivals, the death of an icon, I.N.S. vs. Lily Allen, Radiohead, concert dates and more.
The bit at the start
Good day to you. I overdosed on football a bit at the weekend taking in all 3 of the live sky games. Michael Chopra made me forget that I hate Roy Keane, Malouda made me regret that Arsenal didn't buy him in the summer and Reading made me giggle uncontrollably.
I realise that I should be talking about music here but I've been listening to track 5 of the following album on repeat all weekend and all other music seems entirely redundant to me now.
Beg, borrow, buy, steal or download this album.
Afghan Whigs – Gentlemen
The ultimate break up record.
The Dancing About Architecture MySpace band artist of the week.
Cork based punk tinged synth pop outfit with a debut album due in the coming months.
Recommended song: Signature.
You news, you lose
De mortiis aut bene aut nihil.
Look it up.
Tony Wilson passed away over the weekend at the age of 57 following a battle with kidney cancer (though some reports indicate that he died of a heart attack unrelated to his illness). Wilson was a TV presenter in the UK (with hosting the British version of "Wheel Of Fortune" amongst his credits) but his most significant achievements were as a music impresario. He was one of the founders of Factory records and helped launch the careers of Joy Division as well as a number of other vastly overrated Manchester bands. He also opened the Hacienda, the first of the UK superclubs and helped spawn British rave culture in the early 90's.
I'd better stop now.
I'm moving to Austin.*
* I'm not moving to Austin, I get the sweats just thinking about the heat.
You can add Fun Fun Fun fest to the list of reasons why Austin is the USA's top festival city because the lineup for the event ("2 days, 4 stages, [and] 75 bands") is pretty great.
The second edition of the festival takes place on November 3rd and 4th in Austin's Waterloo Park and already confirmed to play are New Pornographers, Girl Talk, Ted Leo and the Pharmacists, Of Montreal, Okkervil River, Battles, Diplo, Murder City Devils, Lifetime, Cadence Weapon, Explosions in the Sky, Final Fantasy, Mates of State, I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness, Emma Pollock (ex-Delgados), Neurosis, Busdriver, the Sword, the Saints, Against Me!
Does anyone even listen to country music in that town?
If you live in England and fancy a nice chilled weekend on September 14-16 then why not try the End Of The Road festival at Larmer Tree Gardens in North Dorset which claims to be "an intimate music festival for just 5,000 people."
On the bill are Yo La Tengo, Super Furry Animals, Architecture in Helsinki, I'm From Barcelona, Jens Lekman, the Concretes, the Twilight Sad, Scout Niblett, Danielson, Lambchop, Howe Gelb, My Brightest Diamond, Midlake, Joan as Police Woman, Richard Swift, Vandervelde, Loney, Dear, British Sea Power, David Thomas Broughton, Jesse Sykes & the Sweet Hereafter, Robyn Hitchcock, Brakes, Archie Bronson Outfit, Euros Childs, Devastations, the (Band of) Bees, Jim White, King Creosote, Viking Moses!, and a bunch of others.
As far as I'm concerned it'd be worth the price of admission just to see YLT, SFA, TTS and IFB. I've got no love got AIH. Then there's the bands that don't have 3 letters in their name.
Another fucking festival.
One of my fondest musical memories is of CMJ 2005 when I saw Arcade Fire play Central Park and David Bowie came out for the encore and played a couple of songs with them. After that I rushed across town to the Mercury Lounge to see the Wrens play a late show and my favourite New Jersey band (who am I kidding, favourite American band) blew what I'd seen earlier off the stage. Such is the magic of the College Music Journal Music Marathon when every year the best and brightest of alternative music (well those that aren't already living in Brooklyn) descends on New York City.
This year's festival takes place from October 16-20 and although timetables and performers are still not set in stone attendees do have the chance of seeing the following as well as many more …
Spoon, Xiu Xiu, Deerhunter, Dan Deacon, Justice, Simian Mobile Disco, Marnie Stern, Jesu, Islands, Mates of State, Devin the Dude, No Age, the Ponys, Crystal Castles, Brother Ali, the Brunettes, MSTRKRFT, A-Trak, UNKLE, Little Brother, British Sea Power, Del Tha Funky Homosapien, KavinSky and Ruins.
If there's a Radiohead story rest assured I'll be here to cover it.
The BBC's composer in residence and sometimes Radiohead guitar hero Jonny Greenwood is to take part in this/next year's Wordless Music series. The series sees classical musicians mixing it up with dirty indie rockers with possibly sexy consequences and as well as Greenwood other participants include Do Make Say Think, Beirut and Múm.
Greenwood's contribution will be the US debut of his modern classical piece "Popcorn Superhet Receiver". The performances (January 16th & 17th) are part of a "program(s) of works exploring the subjects of religion, technology, and modernity," and will feature 18 violins, 6 violas, 6 cellos and 4 double basses.
The full programme of events for Wordless Music is …

Lily Allen was denied entry into the US on August 5th at LAX airport and had her work visa revoked. Apparently the decision is due to an alleged assault on a photographer in London last March however a spokesman for her told the BBC, "all her commitments will carry on as normal. The work visa will be sorted out by her next visit."
They'll have to get a move on for that as those commitments begin on September 6th in San Diego however Neale Easterby, Allen's manager seemed confident that everything would be sorted out and has said, "It's rubbish. There's no story; it's all good. She's in Las Vegas right now, and she will be there until Thursday shooting a video with Common and Kanye West [for Common's 'Drivin' Me Wild']...It's all going to be sorted out."
Allen herself has commented on the situation and is quoted by the Beeb as saying, "I am trying everything I can to sort this out. It is my intention to play my American dates in September. This depends on the authorities granting me a new work visa. I want my fans to know that I will do everything I can to be back in America in September. I don't like letting my fans down and this is a situation that I am sure we can sort."
No comments has be forthcoming from US government authorities and any suggestion that the visa was revoked due to Keith Allen being a colossal prick are just wild speculation on my part.

The bit at the end
Lawrie Sanchez is an arse and I hope he looses his job very soon.
After taking it easy for the past little while this is going to be quite a gig heavy week for me. Fridge play their first show together in years on Thursday, Friday sees Dan Deacon make his Irish debut and Slint are playing Spiderland in full on Saturday. I've already seen them do it once but I'm still really looking forward to it.
