Quick ‘n’ Dirty Music News: 08.17.07
Posted by Mitch Michaels on 08.17.2007
Wu-Tang to cover the Beatles, problems for the Violent Femmes, new Counting Crows album, the return of Don Imus, new albums from American Idol stars, Van Halen tour, J. Lo's new album, delay in Stones documentary, new albums you should buy, What's Hot on the Dial, the Musical Piece of the Week, and more!
Hey hey, kids. Mitch Michaels, back again after being absent last week. My apologies, I didn't have time to nail down a replacement. Like any of these lazy fucks around the zone would've filled in for me.
Lots of news to get to, so let's get to it. It's quick. It's dirty. It's news.
STAND BY…FOR NEWS!
All news items are from 411 Music's newswire unless otherwise noted:
While My Beatles Fans Gently Weep
Reunited rap unit the Wu-Tang Clan have announced that their upcoming fifth studio album will include a song that borrows heavily from The Beatles classic "While My Guitar Gently Weeps".
"Gently Weeps", from the upcoming 8 Diagrams, will heavily feature samples from the Beatles tune, but that's not all. It will also feature both Red Hot Chili Peppers' John Frusciante and Dhani Harrison, the son of late Beatles guitarist George Harrison, on guitar.
8 Diagrams is currently scheduled to be released in October on SRC Records. It will be Wu-Tang's first album since 2001's Iron Flag and the 2004 death of member Ol' Dirty Bastard.
It's nice to kick off with some news that I know will piss off Beatles fans. Me, I think it's cool. You have to look at the big picture here. The WU is considered one of the greatest rap crews of all-time. Their debut, 36 Chambers, regularly shows up on "Best Of" album lists (including 411's own ongoing Top 100 Albums Ever…actually, I think I just gave away a future entry). Plus, Wu-Tang is KNOWN for their sampling. They've sampled so many R&B and soul classics that it's hard to keep count. Donny Hathaway, Stevie Wonder, Hall & Oates, Earth, Wind & Fire, etc. It's almost historic, seeing as how this just may be Wu-Tang's first ever non-soul, straight up rock sample in a song. The inclusion of John Frusciante insures that it's gonna sound good (the man is a machine on the guitar, perhaps even a throwback to the psychedelic Beatles in '69), and the inclusion of Dhani Harrison adds a nice air of legitimacy, which tells me the RZA and the rest of the WU are taking this track seriously.
So, shut the fuck up you negative Beatles fans. If you hadn't read the news bite, you'd never have heard this song anyway.
Passive Aggression Is The New Violence
Violent Femmes bassist Brian Ritchie is suing the band's frontman Gordon Gano, claiming he was not credited for writing on some of the band's songs, among other financial discrepancies. Further, Ritchie believes that the band's reputation was willingly tarnished by Gano when he allowed their signature song, "Blister In The Sun", use in a Wendy's fast food commercial.
According to the lawsuit filed by Ritchie, "This action is the unfortunate culmination of an ongoing intra-band dispute between Ritchie and Gano over Gano's misappropriation and mis-administration of Ritchie's interests in the jointly owned songs and assets of the band, misappropriation of assets solely owned by Ritchie, improper accounting and nonpayment of royalties."
In response, Gano expressed shock and surprise. "We just played a really, really good tour," he said. "Since the early '80s, everything's really good. We're playing better than ever."
Ritchie is hoping to gain half the control of Violent Femmes, claiming he founded the band before even bringing Gano aboard. Gano claims that, with a couple of exceptions, he has written all of the band's songs.
Violent Femmes formed in 1980 by Ritchie and percussionist Victor DeLorenzo, but didn't become a live or recording band until Gordon Gano joined months later. The band was semi-successful on modern rock radio throughout the 80's and early 90's. They haven't released a new studio album since 2000's Freak Magnet. DeLorenzo left the band to pursue other projects in 1993 and was replaced by Guy Hoffman.
Currently, Violent Femmes have only two more dates scheduled for 2007, a two night stand at Mohegan Sun Casino in October.
I find this news both odd and hilarious. First off, it's hard to believe you've been on tour, out of the country with someone, completely unaware they were going to be hitting you with a lawsuit in a couple days. Brian Ritchie must have been really pissed and good at hiding it or Gordon Gano just is a completely oblivious moron.
Still, Ritchie is one of the band's founders, so he should be getting his due. Sure, Gano is gonna be getting all the publishing rights income, etc, but when it comes to BAND checks, there's no reason Ritchie shouldn't be seeing his bigger third of the pie. And I'm not saying he's not getting that. For all I know, Gano went and bought a Hummer with his Wendy's money (the truck, ya pervs!) and it drove Ritchie over the edge.
As for the advertising bit tarnishing Violent Femmes reputation…uh, yeah. Like ANYONE was holding "Blister In The Sun" up as some kind of magnificent work of art. The truth is, bands use advertisers for publicity just as much as the opposite these days. Hell, TV ads made Moby and has brought oddball bands like Flaming Lips into the mainstream. As long as you keep it tasteful (and what's more tasty than Wendy's Value Menu?), the only folks complaining will be those cocksucks at Rolling Stone (who actually have more ads than content if you ever open the magazine), singers who don't have songs that advertisers want, and stupid fans with their thumb up their ass who would be criticizing any move the band made anyway (while still buying all their albums, of course).
If the Wendy's ads sold any extra copies of Violent Femmes or Add It Up (and chances are it did, a friend of mine who worked at a record store said you wouldn't believe how many people come in looking for "that song from the commercial"), then Ritchie should be thanking them and thanking Gano for having the good sense to go for it.
Oh, Oh, Oh – It's Magic
On October 2nd, Bruce Springsteen will release Magic, his studio follow-up to last year's We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions and his first album with longtime backing outfit The E Street Band since 2002's The Rising.
Bruce and the band are expected to embark on an arena tour following the release. The band's most recent tour, in 2003, was their most successful ever, despite a relatively low ticket price of around $75.
I really like that title. You could say there's something…MAGICAL about it? Bwahahaha! I can't find the quote, but one of Bruce's people called this a hard rocking set, which is a relief. I LOVED Seeger Sessions, as it had Bruce lightening up after years and years of being too serious. And don't get me wrong, Bruce's serious side is good. His acoustic albums are great. Ghost Of Tom Joad will always hold a place in my heart. But 2002's return to E Street was way too influenced by politics and the events of 9/11. Not that it wasn't appropriate, but when Springsteen and the boys get together, it should be a rock ‘n' roll revival, not a rock ‘n' roll wake. Do you realize we haven't had a rocking Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band album since 1984?!? Hopefully Bruce will take some of that loose energy from his Sessions Band and translate it into this classic project.
The Bong Show
The Streets (aka Mike Skinner) has issued a unique new contest via his MySpace page. Skinner is requesting that a creative fan create him a new bong. The winner will be able to test the device out on stage with Skinner at the "Get Loaded In The Park" festival. The festival will be held on August 26th at Clapham Common in London.
According to Skinner's blog: "As you know, The Streets are headlining this year's Get Loaded In The Park at Clapham Common on Sunday August 26th (the day before the Summer Bank Holiday). Mike has decided to invite one of you to go on stage with him for the finale of the show. All you need to do is design a home-made bong, which you'll then smoke live on stage during "Irony Of It All"."
Bong designers can email a photo or drawing of their bong, plus a description to loadedbong@hotmail.com with your name, address and a contact number. The designer of the best bong gets a pair of VIP passes to Get Loaded In The Park. Entries are due August 22nd and the winner will be announced on Mike's blog on August 23rd.
Let me pull back the curtain a little here. Finding interesting music news can get tedious. It seems there are very few types: new release, new tour, legal trouble, breakups and reunions. When I saw this contest, I just had to jump on it for the uniqueness of it all.
Sadly, there's no comment I can make here. The event is called "Loaded In The Park", for God's sakes, they've covered all bases! The Streets rule.
Saturday Night And Every Day After
The new Counting Crows album, Saturday Nights, Sunday Mornings, is due out this November on Geffen. It's the follow-up to 2002's Hard Candy. Frontman Adam Duritz has worked hard at rehabbing himself, physically and mentally, over the past five years. Says Duritz, "I told everybody at the beginning of the record, it was my fault...I took off for the last few years, but there isn't any more free ride here. Everybody's ass is grass. We're fucking going to be a great band or we're not going to be a band."
The new record will be divided by both themes and sound, with the harder rocking, darker "Saturday Nights" material (produced by Gil Norton) standing in contrast to the slower, sorrowful "Sunday Morning" section.
The Counting Crows are currently touring arena's and ball parks with Live and Collective Soul. For the shows, the band is pulling out some new and rarely performed music. They're also set to release an expanded version of their debut, August And Everything After, in September.
Fuck yeah, new Counting Crows. It's about time they got off their ass and made some new music. For the band's part, they've been good at satiating fans with stuff in the interim, be it live albums or that hits compilation. It's nice to hear that the group is revitalized because they're one of the few 90's alt rockers I can see still having an impact at radio and on VH1. All they need is a video with some celeb chick in it and they're back in.
The album excited me, too. I've always said it'd be great if the band could go back and make another album like Recovering The Satellites, and having Gil Norton aboard as producer is another step in that direction. If the songs can hold up (and Adam Duritz may be a semi-emo bitch, but he's always brought the goods lyrically), this could be one of the band's best records.
Nappy Headed Woes
Radio personality Don Imus has reportedly reached a settlement with CBS, who fired the talk show host four months ago following his controversial comments regarding the Rutgers women's basketball team. According to sources, Imus has settled the $120 million suit he brought against his former employer, which would pay out the remainder of Imus' contract as well as damages. Imus' lawyers cited a clause in his contract that stated his show was "unique, extraordinary, irreverent, intellectual, topical, and controversial" and further that his show had violated none of CBS' policies or rules.
As part of the settlement, Imus is now free to shop his services elsewhere, though he's not allowed to make disparaging public comments about CBS in the future. Imus is hoping to jump to WABC-AM, a talk format station that houses personalities like Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh.
As for CBS, they will replace Imus with former NFL star Boomer Esiason and NJ DJ Craig Carton.
Word is that Imus got a settlement of around $20 million, half of what CBS still owed him on his contract. And, wouldn't you know it, just after the figures came out, the center for Rutgers, Kia Vaughn, files a lawsuit against Imus for defamation, slander and all the usual suspects. To clear her good name, of course. I guess Vaughn found out that the WNBA doesn't pay near as well as radio lawsuits. Of course, Vaughn is worried about her image as an "inspirational figure", you know, for winning basketball games and being called names. To be fair, her hair doesn't seem all that nappy. Vaughn being a public figure, though, I'm pretty sure this won't amount to much unless Imus' lawyers go for the quick settlement.
As for a comeback, Imus sure has the material to comment on, but I don't think he'll ever be as respected in the political community. He'll probably finish out his career on MAYBE a major market or two and that's that.
Strike While The Idol's Hot
American Idol's most recent finalist and first runner-up, Jordin Sparks and Blake Lewis, have said that they're hard at work on their respective debut albums. The singers have been using downtime in the ongoing "American Idol Live!" tour to work on recording. Both hope to have their record out before Thanksgiving.
Sparks has recorded four songs for her debut thus far and has another session scheduled for this week. She hoped to complete the untitled record during an L.A. recording session after the tour wraps up in late September. Says Jordin, "It's kind of [got] Kelly Clarkson's pop edge, a little bit...and I recorded a ballad-y type song, like a power vocal song, and then I recorded just a really fun, fast one. I'm trying to mix everything together. I'm loving all the songs I'm recording, so hopefully that will come off the album when you listen to it and you'll be able to feel the emotion."
Meanwhile, Lewis has reportedly completed eight songs for his first album, tentatively titled Audio Daydream. Says Blake, "It's your favorite 80's mix tape...very inspired by Michael Jackson, Prince, Erasure, Depeche Mode, Duran Duran, the Cure. It's all over the map, really -- very influenced by 80's hip-hop, old school breaks, whatever...They're letting me down the album I've always wanted to make."
Both Lewis and Sparks are signed to BMG.
It's hard to say how this year's crop of Idols will fare commercially. Jordin has a good voice, but definitely lacks the look, which is tough for female pop singers. Blake, on the other hand, seemed to have the potential for big things, but will have that stink of A.I. on him for the next couple of years when it comes to serious collaborators. I could just imagine this cat doing a whole album unchecked. It'd be un-fucking-listenable, no matter how great he thinks. Look for Audio Daydream to mostly play it safe, though.
I think it's funny that the other 10 contestants have to wait till the end of the tour to see if they'll get record contracts. You get on national TV, do a national tour, then go back to your shitty job at the local Walgreens. That's 15 minutes for you.
Tour Scheduled, Eruption Pending
Van Halen has announced the dates for the first leg of their upcoming tour, their first with original frontman David Lee Roth in over twenty years. During a press conference, the band hyped up the shows and made several references to the announced dates being just the beginning of this classic Van Halen reunion. A new studio album was alluded to, but never mentioned outright. Van Halen hasn't recorded a full album with Roth since 1984.
The band will feature Roth on vocals, longtime members (and brothers) Eddie Van Halen and Alex Van Halen on guitar and drums, and new bassist Wolfgang Van Halen (Eddie's 16-year old son) on bass.
Well, of course the big question now is how many dates will this tour make. The original buzz was a 50 date jaunt, but we've only been announced the first leg, which has 26 shows. Technically, you could say this tour has been canceled once already, thanks to Eddie's rehab.
A conservative fan may say the band will tough out this leg, but you can forget those other 24 dates. Then you have to remember: this is VAN HALEN. Eddie hates Roth, that's a given. But don't miss the fact that Eddie's ex-wife, actress Valerie Bertinelli, will also be touring with the group to keep an eye on her underage son and Van Halen bassist Wolfgang Van Halen. That creates the tension between Eddie and Valerie, Wolfgang and Valerie/Eddie AND David Lee Roth and Valerie, who never got along to begin with. It's the perfect storm. Further, the last few dates are shit on the list, with places like Vancouver, Portland and Calgary set for shows in December, where it's gonna be cold and not near as fun. The band has a near-packed October and then an easy November, with a few big dates at Madison Square Garden and in L.A. I'm gonna be conservative and call L.A. the last Van Halen show. Glendale, Arizona residents, don't bother picking up your tickets. That's 16 dates, for those keeping score!
It's No Supernova, But…
After his performance at Lollapalooza, rapper Lupe Fiasco spoke to the media about the chances of a full album by his CRS project (short for Child Rebel Soldiers), a collaboration between himself and fellow hip-hop stars Kanye West and Pharrell Williams. Says Lupe, "[Our labels are] working it out...Whoever is going to pay is going to pay a whole hell of a lot. Everybody is excited, [but] "Us Placers" is the only record we have."
"Us Placers" was released via an online mixtape. The track, which samples Thom Yorke's "The Eraser", has been performed by Fiasco at recent shows.
Currently, Kanye West is gearing up for the September 11th release of his third studio album, Graduation, on Def Jam/Roc-A-Fella. His most recent single from that album, "Stronger", reached #6 on the Billboard Hot 100. Producer Pharrell Williams' second solo album, Out Of My Mind, is in limbo thanks to label Interscope Records. It has been shelved indefinitely since July.
Meanwhile, Fiasco is anticipating the November 20th release of The Cool on 1st & 15th/Atlantic, his sophomore album and the follow-up to Food & Liquor, which reached #8 on the Billboard charts and was nominated for a Grammy for Best Rap Album in 2007.
This could be the best rap supergroup since…wait, have there been any other rap supergroups?
I wouldn't think now would be the time for a project like this (outside of a couple singles), given the market is about to be saturated with Kanye and Lupe material. You've got the new Common which Kanye's hands are all over, then all these guys have upcoming albums (‘cept Pharrell, but he's always busy with something). I'd say this time next year would be a good time for this release, maybe a little longer.
Oh, and a rap group that samples Radiohead? We may finally have unity in this world.
!Aye Caramba¡
Pop star Jennifer Lopez has announced the release of her sixth studio album, Brave, due out October 9th on Epic Records. The lead single "Do It Well" recently hit radio. Brave follows Coma Ana Una Mujer, Lopez' first Spanish album, which reached #10 on the Billboard charts earlier this year. Brave will feature appearances by producers such as J.R. Rotem, Ryan Tedder, Middi Mafia and Bloodshy.
The album will hit stores just a few days after the beginning of Lopez' first tour, which she embarks on with husband Marc Anthony September 29th.
Well, supposedly you've got all the big name producers on this one (Swizz Beatz, Timbaland, Jermaine Dupri, Ryan Tedder), so there's no doubt J-Lo will be hitting MTV and the charts hard soon. I've never found Lopez to be the kind of talent that, say, Beyoncé is, but she's got the sense to work with the right people. It's a Hollywood mentality that, sadly, pays off more than talent in the music biz these days. Especially in pop and mainstream R&B/hip-hop.
Stones At The Movies
Shine A Light, a documentary chronicling the Rolling Stones' concerts at New York's Beacon Theater in 2006 directed by Martin Scorsese, has been postponed. The film, which was originally penciled in for September, has been moved to April of 2008. The studio cited a need for more promotional time as the reason for the delay. The Stones are currently in the midst of touring.
The 2006 Beacon performances were part of the Stones' "Bigger Bang" tour, which is the highest grossing tour of all time. The shows featured appearances by Jack White, Buddy Guy and Christina Aguilera, as well as several notable audience members.
It's kind of easy to have the highest grossing tour of all time when you charge insane prices for tickets. I'm convinced people who go see the Stones and then see that they DON'T die before the next tour have to be disappointed, because you know for like two decades folks have been thinking, hey, this could be their last show!
Other than the money it made, I hardly see "Bigger Bang" as worthy of a Scorsese-directed concert film. The Stones are so far past their prime that I don't think they can even see it anymore and, as history shows, are still nowhere near hanging it up. So what makes this as important as, say, The Last Waltz? That's right, not a damn thing.
The Brothers Gallagher
Lord Don't Slow Me Down, a chronicle of Oasis' 2005 world tour, is set to be released on DVD October 29th. The movie, directed by Baillie Walsh, had a limited release in UK theaters last year. The DVD is expected to contain commentary by Oasis' Gallagher brothers, outtakes and a second disc featuring 16 songs performed from the '05 Manchester, England show. The 2005 tour was Oasis' biggest ever, playing in over 26 countries to over two million fans.
According to Noel Gallagher, recording for Oasis' seventh studio album began on July 3rd of this year.
Despite my disparaging remarks against the Stones, I actually am a big fan of concert DVDs. This will be Oasis' definitive live DVD, of course, and it'll be interesting to see what the brothers have to say in the commentary. They're always good for a laugh. Assholes.
It's also good to see Oasis gaining some momentum again. They really are a great rock band.
NEW RELEASES FOR AUGUST 21, 2007
WHAT EVERYONE WILL BUY:
The New Pornographers - Challengers - It's another slow release week as the world gears up for Kanye and 50 Cent. New Pornographers aren't exactly a big mainstream band, but 2005's Twin Cinema was nearly a Top 40 hit and there's a lot of buzz around their new disc. I could see it doing pretty well, especially in a slow release week. Neko Case is always cool. Either this, or people will be eating up the new Joe Nichols album.
WHAT WILL BE NUMBER ONE:
Well, I was out last week, but I sure got fucked calling Hairspray to hit #1, didn't I? Common took it, which I didn't foresee given historical sales, but I didn't realize the power of Kanye, I guess. Korn also outperformed Sean Kingston, which I figured would top all of the new releases. I guess there is counting for taste. Kidz Bop 12 snuck in there on me, too, which means maybe there ISN'T counting for taste after all.
Then last week, UGK stole #1 with Underground Kingz, which actually would've been easy to call given that it's a double disc set. Plies debuting at #2 surprised me cause, seriously, who the fuck is Plies? The Jonas Brothers also got some Top 5 love with their second, self-titled album. Not to mention, Common and Korn absolutely sunk in week two with only about 1/3 the sales.
This week…no brainer…can you say High School Musical 2? This will be an easy grab, as both UGK and Plies should see sharp falls, and the rest of the Top 10 are pretty stale (seriously, how long can Miley Cyrus stick around in the Top 5?). Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds will be strong contenders and will probably settle for #2. Never underestimate the power of the DMB fanbase. The bottom of the Top 10 should see debuts by both country singer Luke Bryan (cause it's been a while since we've seen a new country debut) and electronica guru Paul van Dyk, thanks to the strength of his single, "White Lies", featuring Jessica Sutta of the Pussycat Dolls.
WHAT YOU SHOULD BUY:
There's always something worth buying in the New Release section. Here are my picks:
Talib Kweli - Eardrum – Support alternative hip-hop. Phil Watts, Jr. would want you to. Plus, any friend of Ben Kweller is a friend of mine.
The New Pornographers - Challengers - I talked about this above. Neko Case is a wonderful vocalist and this edgy Canadian indy band has been making great albums for years now. Stand up and take notice.
Travis Tritt - The Storm - Another throwback to outlaw country that gets shit on by people who don't know better (a la Toby Keith). I've NEVER heard a bad Travis Tritt album.
Halloween: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack - Misfits, Alice Cooper, KISS, BÖC…all via Rob Zombie? I am creaming my jeans for this movie.
WHAT'S HOT ON THE DIAL?
Billboard has about a million charts, so each week I'm gonna round up the #1s from each format. That way, no matter WHAT station you flip to when not using your presets, you'll be aware of what you might hear. Newly crowned #1s are in bold:

MUSICAL PIECE OF THE WEEK
I got an email from a rep from AXE this week, pointing me to some tasty videos of the Pussycat Dolls' Jessica Sutta doing an awesome new dance for their "Bom Chicka Wah Wah" campaign (you gotta admit that gets stuck in your head, plus the TV spots are hilarious). You can check her out at the AXE myspace site, here and see the videos. I believe there are six and they're all pretty good for *watching*. You gotta act soon though, cause they'll only be up for one more week.
As far as Jessica, she's working on a solo career now (still with PCD, as far as I know), and her first solo work is with German electronica artist Paul van Dyk. The song, "White Lies", has been gaining airplay at radio (also the #1 dance single this week) and the new CD, In Between, came out this week.
Hey, we all love the Pussycat Dolls, right? Here's a pictorial tribute to Jessica Sutta, our Quick ‘n' Dirty Piece Of The Week:
THE END
Hope you all had fun. Be sure to drop me a line on what you liked, didn't, etc.
