Dancing About Architecture 9.25.07
Posted by Ian Wright on 09.25.2007
Radiohead are serial killers, Richie Ramone sues everyone, lots of JAMC, The Meg White sex tape, Songwriting lessons and Ryan Adams.
The bit at the start
OK, work was long and hard today, I can't do an intro as I think my legs are about to fall off at the knees. But if I don't do something the image I'm about to post will fuck up the ad on the right of this text.
That should do it.
Beg, borrow, buy, steal or download this album.
Nels Cline and Thurston Moore – Pillow Wand
2 of my favourite guitarists, together 10 years ago.
The Dancing About Architecture MySpace band of the week.
Proof that membership of Oasis doesn't mean that you (or in this case Andy Bell) is devoid of decent musical ideas.
Recommended song: Vapour Trail
You news, you lose
Sex tape? What sex tape? Oh, there's no sex tape.
Did you know that on the internet you can find videos of people having sex?
It's called pornography apparently.
A piece of "pornography" appeared on the Internet last week which showed a woman having sex (well duh). The raven haired "model"/"performer"/"actress" in this particular video is said to bear a striking resemblance to White Stripes anxiety sufferer/drummer Meg White.
Obviously this resemblance led to the following probably being posted on a number of message boards (fact checking? research? what?) …
OMGLOLZORZMEGWHITESEXTAPELOL!!!
Well if you've downloaded the video or are planning to do so I've got news for ya bub, it's not bad, it's not good, it's just news. It's not her (apparently according to her publicist).
The statement from the White Stripes publicist reads, "Some people have a very twisted sense of humor and this prank is in particularly bad taste. The tape circulating on the internet as featuring Meg White is fake. It's definitely not Meg."
So there you have it. If you really want to see Meg White on the job then you still have to do it the old fashioned way, go to Detroit, maybe lose some weight, definitely get a lot more charming, hide any contempt you have for her "drumming" and get very, very lucky.
If you do you should totally tape it and put it on the web.
Obligatory Radiohead news.
So the mystery of the Zodiac killings has finally been solved. It was Thom Yorke.
A series of images like this one …
appeared on Radiohead's website over the course of the past few days. Upon first inspection it appears to be a cipher similar to semaphore but there's no way in hell I'm going to bother trying to break it.
The crack team of cryptographers (none of whom are as hot as Audrey Tautou) on the at ease dot com message boards have taken a stab at it though. One message is said to translate as "Yes we are still alive" while another seems to feature lyrics to "Bodysnatchers", a song recorded for Radiohead's upcoming 7th album.
A little less time messing with your fans' minds and a bit more time releasing the record I've been waiting 4 fucking years for perhaps guys?
JAMC sandwich.
I skipped the Jesus And Mary Chain's appearance at the recent Electric Picnic Festival here in favour of seeing Final Fantasy play. I'm completely comfortable with that choice. I would have still been cool with it if the Reid's had been joined on stage by Scarlet Johansson as at Coachella. In fact, such was the magnificence of the Canadian violin genius' set that Ms. Johansson could have performed a sex act with a microphone on stage and I'd have been happy that I got to hear "Many Lives -> 49".
Anyway, if you're the sort of person that would have gone to see the Jesus And Mary Chain instead then you might be interested in learning that the band are to release a new song, "All Things Must Pass" (which they performed on Letterman back in May) on the upcoming soundtrack to "Heroes", which I understand is quite popular but which I couldn't sit through the first episode of even after it had been a huge hit stateside. Christ, I even made it to episode 4 for Lost season 2 before deciding that it was crap.
Anyway, the soundtrack will be out in January and there'll possibly be a new album soon after.
Is suing punk? Nevermind, having Phil Spector produce you and in the process recording one of the greatest singles ever isn't punk either.
Ex Ramones drummer Richie Ramone (known as Richard Reinhardt to his mum) is to sue (deep breath …) Wal-Mart, Apple, RealNetworks, the band's management and the estate of Johnny Ramone for $900,000 in unpaid royalties that he claims that he's owed for 6 songs ("Smash You", "Somebody Put Something in My Drink", "Human Kind", "I'm Not Jesus", "I Know Better Now" and "(You) Can't Say Something Nice") that he wrote whilst a member of the band.
The songs in question don't really stack up to "Sheena Is A Punk Rocker" in the Ramones canon but nonetheless Ramone (Richie) claims that the band and all the others that he's sued (which is probably everyone that he could think of) have been getting fat off his work as there was no mention of digital sales in writing when the original agreements about royalties were arrived at.
Which is pretty obvious, when that happened the internet was just a twinkle in Al Gore's eye. I'd suggest that Reinhardt is on crack but he'd probably sue me if I did. Anyway glue sniffing is more likely considering what the band I'm writing about is.
Minnesota is cold, I wouldn't like to live there, but this makes me want to visit.
I love those Fargo style accents.
Anyway, if you live in the Twin Cities (and I may be the only person in all of Ireland who knows that the "other" one is St. Paul) and fancy a lesson in the art of songwriting then your luck is in because Alan Sparhawk (one of America's finest song writers in my mind) as well as members of Atmosphere and Low will be participating in a the latest series of lectures/interviews/performances called Making Music taking place at The Whole venue in the University of Minnesota. The series, according to it's website "features long-format discussions with talented musicians about their art...[and] includes interviews, live demonstrations, videos, exclusive and unreleased tracks, prizes, and Q&A from the audience," which sounds kinda cool.
First up is Tapes n' Tapes' Erik Applewick on Thursday. Sparhawk's appearance is on October 10th and Sean "MC Slug" Daley of Atmosphere rounds things off on November 29th. All events are fee and all-ages but prebooking is advised.
He never stops.
Hey, do you realise that it's been at least a week and a half since Ryan Adams released something?
Seriously, it's true, check if you don't believe me. The dude has been slacking lately.
In fact you have to wait until October 23rd before the most prolific man in indie since Robert Pollard/music's worst self-editor puts out something new. The something new in question is an EP entitled Follow The Lights on the Lost Highway label.
Follow The Lights features 2 brand new songs as well as some live studio takes and an Alice In Chains cover and almost definitely won't be as good as Heartbreaker.
Tracklisting:
01 Follow the Lights (new)
02 My Love for You Is Real (new)
03 Blue Hotel (previously unreleased, recorded live in studio)
04 Dear John (live in studio)
05 This is It (Cardinals version, live in studio)
06 Down in a Hole (Alice In Chains cover, live in studio)
07 If I Am a Stranger (live in studio)

The bit at the end
If you're into experimental guitar stuff you really should check out that album I plugged earlier.
It's spectacularly good to be an Arsenal fan right now.
