Quick ‘n’ Dirty Music News 10.19.07
Posted by Mitch Michaels on 10.19.2007

What the fuck, angel babies? It's Mitch Michaels, back again for another week of ballads, boobs and bad words. I'd apologize for my no-show last week, but hey, you can't expect me to bring the awesomeness week in and week out with no break. If you're itching to know where I was (and God knows you must be, given all zero of the emails I got asking about my well-being), let's just say that continuing your education can be a pain in the ass.

Anyway, I'm here, you're here, so let's get to it…

Oh, and before I forget, check out Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers: Runnin' Down A Dream, which is set to air on the Sundance channel on October 29th. It's a four-hour documentary that is absolutely amazing. I know everything about this band and I'm still finding out new things. Or, if you can't wait, pick up the DVD, which comes with a full live concert from last year and a CD of rare performances.

Now, let's get to it.

It's quick, it's dirty, it's news.

STAND BY…FOR NEWS!

All news items are from 411 Music's newswire unless otherwise noted:

Rock Concert

The iTunes celebrity playlists are always interesting, and it's fun to find out what famous folks have the same tastes in songs as poor slobs like you and me. A few weeks ago, I stumbled across one of their latest. It's from former WWE Champion and star of The Gameplan, Dwayne "Don't Call Me Just The Rock" Johnson. Here's the list of The Rock's favorites:

Sam Cooke – "You Send Me" – Nice way to start out his list and instantly credible. Sam Cooke never seems to get enough attention, despite the fact that he pretty much pioneered the R&B genre. This is Cooke's first big hit from 1957. Rock calls this a great love song. I guess he'll be playing it for other chicks since he and his wife separated this summer. You won't see ANY of that Gameplan money, bitch!

2Pac & Syke – "All Eyez On Me" – Ah, more cred! Loving "All Eyez On Me" is pretty much mandatory for anyone who's down with 90's rap, but knowing that The Rock could be blasting this while preparing to put on a big smile for the set of a crummy Disney movie makes him seem instantly cooler to me.

Luther Vandross – "So Amazing" – Step One: Light a candle. Step Two: Put on some Luther Vandross. Step Three: Pull out the People's Strudel.

Elvis Presley – "Fame And Fortune" – So Rock wasn't just pretending to be an Elvis fan when he founded the Smackdown Hotel. This is an interesting choice as it's not an instantly recognizable Elvis song. It's a B-Side from Elvis' first hit of the 1960's, "Stuck On You". I'm sure The Rock means every word of this one.

Eric Clapton – "Wonderful Tonight" – What the fuck? This came out of left field. Let me be on record as stating that I fucking can't stand this song, other than that guitar lick. It's a song about getting drunk and having your wife bring you home. My friend's dad did that when we were in Junior High and it wasn't romantic at all.

Lil Jon & The East Side Boyz – "What U Gon' Do (Remix)" – More rap to get him through the day. The lead single from Crunk Juice. WHAT?

Kool & The Gang – "Take My Heart" – A funky classic and a Top 20 hit from 1981. I'm really digging Rock's urban tastes here, but the classic rock is feeling out of place.

David Banner – "Talk To Me" – Another album track. This guy is deep.

Elvis Presley – "Are You Lonesome Tonight?" – Another Elvis song from 1960. I guess we know what maw and paw Johnson liked listening to.

Willie Nelson – "Crazy" – Huh? Now, I love "Crazy". And I think Willie Nelson's "Crazy" is better than Patsy Cline's. But this song, wow, it just does not fit on Rock's playlist. Listening to these ten tracks straight through will make your brain shut down. For only $9.99!

See, he likes music just like you and me. He just has way more money.

Nas Resurrects The N-Word

Nas has announced that the name of his next album will be Nigga. The album is due out by the end of the year.

Wow, and I thought Hip-Hop Is Dead raised some eyebrows. This is a bold move by Nas, who has risen to become mainstream hip-hop's most respected artist without making a good album in about seven years (did anyone else dig God's Son?). Bold or just hilariously stupid. Bottom line is this, if you're album is going to have a title that makes people uncomfortable, it damn sure better deliver double. Last year's Hip-Hop Is Dead ruffled some feathers, but the actual music wasn't anything near the kind of thing that could save the genre. Hell, even Jay-Z's indulgent "comeback" album outshone that CD.

I think this is just a sad publicity stunt that feeds on the racial tension that exists in the US. Now newspapers, magazines and TV critics are gonna have to worry about "can I say this about Nigga?" "Can I even SAY Nigga?" The whole thing could potentially backfire, I guess, seeing as how the media could reporting on the album (thusly, not having to deal with the sensitivity of the title) altogether.

Still Popular?

Nada Surf's new album, Lucky, is due out February 5th. Guests on the album include Death Cab For Cutie's Ben Gibbard and the Long Winters' John Roderick, along with singer/songwriter Ed Harcourt and Jesse Sykes guitarist Phil Wandscher.

I guess Lucky refers to the fact that this band is lucky to still have a record contract. Oh wait, they're out on the indies now. Not that I didn't dig "Popular", but, Nada Surf, what have you done for me lately?

Actually, Nada Surf is a good example of one of those bands that got screwed over by their label and was never quite able to recapture public attention. It's been 11 years since "Popular" was on the radio, and I can't name one Nada Surf song or album title that has been released since. And I'm still not sure if those football players at the end of the video were getting ready for some man-on-man action.

T.I. Vs. The F.E.D.s

T.I. was ordered today to remain in jail on weapons charges until a bail hearing later this week. The rap star was arrested Saturday before his scheduled performance at the BET Hip-Hop Awards in Atlanta. According to Federal authorities, T.I. tried to buy three machine guns and two silencers from a man cooperating with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco Firearms and Explosives.

After attempting to purchase several machine guns from an undercover ATF agent, the unnamed individual -- who said he had been a bodyguard for T.I. since July 2007 -- was arrested. He began cooperating with the government and said that he was buying the machine guns and silencers for T.I., a convicted felon, the complaint said.

Man, T.I. just can't keep out of jail, can he? This is pretty shitty that his weasel-ass bodyguard turned on him, but hey, I guess it's tough when you're facing charges of your own. You don't think T.I. could have helped make those charges go away, though, do you? Where's Frank Lucas when you need him?

It's too bad he got arrested, because T.I. has other charges against him and is, reportedly, still on probation thanks to an earlier sentencing. With the array of celebrity jailings lately, I just hate to think someone I actually like could be going away for quite a bit.

And some people will be saying, why the FUCK did T.I. need machine guns? Well, I'm not justifying it, but when you come up as a drug dealer and then have your close friends shot and killed when you've become a legitimately successful rapper, I can see how you may feel the need for an extensive armory.

In My Thoughts I Have Seen Ringtones Through The Trees

Rock legends Led Zeppelin have partnered with Verizon Wireless to make their music available digitally for the first time ever. The new Led Zeppelin downloads and ringtones will be available on November 13th. Later that month, Led Zep will reunite in London for their first live show in nearly 20 years. They will also be releasing a brand new compilation, Mothership, a 2-CD set of their best songs remastered.

Well, I guess the Led Zeppelin hype has officially begun. Don't worry non-Led Zep fans, this comes around every few years and will die down before 2008 gets into swing. The thing about Led Zeppelin is that they're NEVER going to release a new album. Never. So re-releasing material (like Mothership, or How The West Was Won a few years ago) is as good as it gets for Zeppelin fans. Well, technically, this concert is as good as it gets. And when the CD or DVD of this show gets released, we'll go through another surge of people talking about how Led Zep IV was the greatest album of all time for a few days.

It's how they stay relevant without actually doing any work!

Mandatory Britney Spears News

Britney Spears turned herself in to Los Angeles police last night on charges of an August hit and run incident. The troubled pop star was only at the police station for around 45 minutes, in which time she was fingerprinted and photographed. She showed up wearing large designer sunglasses because, according to her, she had pinkeye.

Spears faces a court hearing on the charges at the end of next month.

Pinkeye? How fucking gross. If Britney was suffering from pinkeye, bet's on that it was the kind you get from copious amounts of alcohol and not from allergies and infections. Of course, with the mysterious pinkeye excuse, you have to wonder exactly what Britney was hiding behind those oversize designer glasses. Here are the top 5 guesses:

TOP 5 GUESSES ON WHAT BRITNEY WAS HIDING BEHIND HER SUNGLASSES

1. Jayden & Sean
2. Panties
3. Business Permit For "NYLA 2" (Remember that?)
4. Spare Baby Bottle For Paparazzi Attacks
5. Last Shreds Of Dignity

Joshua Tree Rises Again

Rockers U2 are re-releasing their notable Joshua Tree album to commemorate its 20th anniversary. The newly remastered disc will be available in a single disc set, a 2-CD set with extra tracks, a 2-CD/DVD package and a double vinyl package. The discs will drop on November 20th via UMe.

The extra tracks will include demos, alternate takes and B-sides, while the DVD will feature a full 1987 concert by the band from Paris.

The Joshua Tree was U2's fifth album. Released in 1987, the record reached #1 on the Billboard charts and spawned the hit singles "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" (#1), "Where The Streets Have No Name" (#13), "Bullet The Blue Sky" (#14 Mainstream Rock), "With Or Without You" (#1) and "In God's Country" (#44). It has since been certified diamond.

This may be something I pick up, since I only have The Joshua Tree on vinyl and that 2-disc version sounds mighty attractive. Here's a question: when something is re-released on vinyl these days, where the hell do you buy it? Indie record stores maybe, but those are getting harder to find than songs on rock radio that aren't by the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

If you've forgotten, The Joshua Tree was ranked #20 on 411's Top 100 Albums Ever list and deservedly so. The same list, by the way, that was recently pissed all over by the new kids in a recent Top 5 column. That's right, I'm always keeping my eye out new staffers. Piss me off and I'll have you reviewing hot dance singles from here to eternity.

Hip-Hop Bop

A man is accusing Sean "Diddy" Combs of assaulting him at Manhattan club Kiosk early Saturday morning in the trendy neighborhood of Soho. Investigators were seeking to locate more witnesses before questioning Combs. In a statement, Combs' attorney denied any wrongdoing by his client. Combs and the man apparently were arguing over a woman before Combs punched the man in the face.

Meanwhile, Foxy Brown has pleaded not guilty to charges that she threw a cell phone at a neighbor who complained about the volume of her car radio. Brown entered the plea to the assault charges in Brooklyn state Supreme Court today after arriving from Rikers Island prison wearing casual street clothing. Brown and the woman got into an altercation on July 30th over Brown playing her car stereo loudly outside of the woman's house.

Man, I wish I had Diddy's money, because you know no one's gonna be stepping forward to say that they saw him punch this motherfucker in the face. And you know what, why should Diddy be charged for punching a guy? I'm of the mind that 1) if you're at a bar/club and 2) a woman is somehow involved, punching someone in the face should be perfectly acceptable. If people aren't free to punch other people in the face because they're being an asshole, how will we ever find out who not to fuck with? How will the alpha males ever rise?

As far as Foxy Brown goes…ha! The woman's in prison for anyway, what can they sentence her to after throwing a cell phone? And why are we talking about Foxy Brown anyway? She hasn't released even a moderate hit in six years.

The funny thing is that Brown threw a cell phone at her neighbor, but she's in jail for a fight that stemmed from her refusing to pay a $20 manicurist bill. If you're fighting over a $20 bill, I don't think you should be fucking around with your cell phones, Foxy. This chick needs therapy AND financial counseling.

Neil's On The Road Again

Neil Young will begin a North American tour on October 18th in Boise, Idaho, two days after the release of his new album Chrome Dreams II on Reprise Records. Concerts continue until December 13th in New York, including two nights at the historic Massey Hall in Toronto, Canada, the site of early legendary shows by the acclaimed singer-songwriter.

Chrome Dreams II is a collection of eight new and two classic Young songs. Recorded last summer in Northern California, musicians include Ben Keith (pedal steel guitar, dobro and other instruments), Ralph Molina (drums) and Rick Rosas (bass), who will all be performing in concert with Young.

Pegi Young (Neil's wife) is opening artist on the tour. She released her debut album last summer on Vapor/Warner Bros. Records, followed by a series of sold out shows in Northern California and New York.

On October 27th and 28th Young will host the 21st annual Bridge School Concerts in Mountain View, California, which also features appearances by Metallica, John Mayer, Tom Waits with the Kronos Quartet, the trio of Eddie Vedder, Flea and Jack Irons, and others.

I first got into Neil Young my first year in college, and I just could not get enough of him at the time. The thing is, I can't name a single bad Neil Young album (other than maybe Sleeps With Angels) from before 2000. The guy knew how to jam and he knew how to write tight classic rock tunes. Any Neil Young compilation is worth picking up because the guy just rocks the hell out of everything.

Sadly, Neil made two cardinal mistakes: 1) he kept making albums and 2) he quit making good albums. Seriously, the guy is 61 years old, but he's put out seven albums over the past seven years. Can you name those albums? (not to mention they haven't been very good).

In contrast, contemporaries like Tom Petty and Bob Dylan (different eras, but still fit the "classic rocker" mold) have each released two albums since 2000, and all of those have been pretty big media events. And were they great albums? Not really. Dylan's Love & Theft was barely listenable and Petty's The Last DJ was his weakest album possibly ever. Still, those guys are enjoying their legendary status while Neil continues to crank out largely irrelevant tripe.

Neil, sit back, take some time off, have a ham sandwich. Just don't cut your finger.

C-Murder Most Foul

Rapper C-Murder will see trial early next year for the the shooting death of 16-year old Steve Thomas at a Louisiana nightclub in 2002. C-Murder (ne Corey Miller) was convicted of the shooting in 2003, but the conviction was overruled due to withheld evidence by the prosecution. If convicted again, C-Murder faces a life sentence without parole.

C-Murder is the brother of rapper Master P. He debuted in 1998 with the platinum #3 album
Life Or Death. His follow-up, 1999's Bossalinie, reached #2 and went gold. His last album to chart was 2005's The Truest Shit I Ever Said, which was released on Koch Records. His next release, Screamin 4 Vengeance, is set for an early 2008 street date.

Yes, this story is only interesting because the guy's name is C-Murder. Apparently, C-Murder is being charged with second degree murder after the kid, Thomas, was shot in the chest at a nightclub. Thomas was admitted into the club after flashing a fake ID. I can't find much else on the story. C-Murder was placed under house arrest at his grandmother's house during the first trial. I guess Murder's life is gonna be all cookies and milk and board games again until this shit gets straightened out.

Man, I love my grandma, but the thought of being stuck at her house 24/7 for months on end would have me thinking seriously about jail. 85 degree temperatures, early bedtimes, terrible cable line-up…

We did have some fun watching "Matlock" back in the day, though. And it's still better than getting fucked in the ass, I guess.

QOTSA So Good They Wanna Make A CD

The newest line-up of Queens Of The Stone Age, which includes drummer Joey Castillo, multi-instrumentalist Troy Van Leeuwen and new members Michael Shuman and Dean Fertita (The Raconteurs), is the best version of the band yet. That is if frontman Josh Homme is to be believed. Says Homme, "The other night we were up 'til six in the morning, all of us playing guitar...Queens sounds better than it ever has live, but we're trying to figure out how to tour and how to [write and record], 'cause I think for everyone right now the idea of creating something is even more enticing than going on the road. This lineup feels like we could basically blow through a whole record quick."

Homme is also talking about several projects for the new QOTSA, which includes one or more EPs, a new album in 2008 and a live CD or DVD.

QOTSA's latest album,
Era Vulgaris, which was recorded by Homme, Castillo and Van Leeuwen, reached #14 on the Billboard charts upon its release earlier this year.

That's cool and all, but what was wrong with the three-man line-up? If I remember correctly, I gave Era Vulgaris a really good review.

Infiltrating Death Row

During a Q&A session following an L.A. screening for the documentary Tupac Assasination - Conspiracy Or Revenge?, the audience was stunned to hear ex-Death Row bodyguard Kevin Hackie calmly state that he was an undercover FBI Agent during his employment at Death Row from 1992 to 1996.

Hackie, who also said that "An arrest will be made in this case," made his comments to an already anxious and restless crowd of close to one hundred people who peppered the panel with questions. Hackie joined the film makers, R.J. Bond and ex-Tupac bodyguard "Big Frank" Alexander on the panel for the Q&A after taking issue with an LAPD detective who was in the audience defending the department's handling of the case, which had serious L.A. implications even though Tupac was killed in Las Vegas. More can be heard from Hackie on an upcoming bonus feature on the DVD.

The murder of Tupac has been a compelling mystery for 11 years, but with Hackie's revelation the plot only thickens.

According to press, the new DVD Tupac Assassination already lays out the entire murder conspiracy plot surrounding the murder of the best selling hip-hop artist of all time. This eye-opening documentary points out all of the failures of law enforcement officials to fully investigate, follow up on leads and interview key parties involved in this tragic event. The filmmakers claim that the DVD will dissipate the smoke and confusion caused by unsubstantiated rumors, myopic myths and urban legends and a clear picture will appear from the confusion.

The DVD will be in stores on Tuesday, October 23, 2007.

What the hell was going on with hip-hop in the early 90's? It's already been said that Hackie was an FBI informant while working for Tupac, but hearing that he was a full-blown undercover agent is still surprising. Hackie even testified in the Notorious B.I.G. wrongful death trial back in 2005, stating that he was told by Death Row head of security Reginald Wright that they were going to "get" Biggie and his crew, who they believed were responsible for Tupac's murder. It was the first time the deaths of Tupac and Notorious B.I.G. had been linked in court.

Just like Biggie, Tupac's death will never be satisfactorily solved. The irony is that two bitter enemies, who may or may not have been responsible for each others' murders, will have their names forever linked by history.

Homeland Security Vs. Death Cab For Cutie

Death Cab For Cutie guitarist Chris Walla has seen his solo debut delayed several times, but it seems like the latest delay may be the strangest. Walla recently found that the master hard drive - containing all song files - was confiscated by Homeland Security at the Canadian border, for reasons not abundantly clear, and sent to the department's computer-forensics division for further inspection.

Says Walla, "It's a true story. Barsuk [Records] had hired a courier — who does international stuff all the time and who they had used before — to bring [the album] back from Canada, where I was working on it. And he got to the border and he had all his paperwork and it was all cool, only they turned him away, and they confiscated the drive and gave it to the computer-forensics division of our Homeland Security-type people...And now I couldn't even venture a guess as to where it is, or what it's doing there. I mean, I can't just call their customer-service center and ask about my drive. There's nothing I can do. I don't know if we can hire an attorney ... is there a black-hole attorney? You can't take a black hole to court."

Walla still has the tapes containing all his songs, which he's now trying to master and mix on his own in order to have the record out in January. The tentative title is
Field Manual and Walla calls it "very political".

Death Cab For Cutie's latest album was 2005's gold
Plans, which peaked at #4 on the Billboard charts and was nominated for a Best Alternative Rock Album Grammy. The band has their eye on a spring 2008 release date for their follow-up.

Could it be that the U.S. Government got wind that, much like most band member solo projects, Plans would be a giant BOMB?

NEW RELEASES FOR OCTOBER 23, 2007

WHAT EVERYONE WILL BUY:

Carrie Underwood - Carnival Ride - Score another one for country music. "So Small" is already a Top 20 hit and Carnival Ride is Carrie Underwood's big bang album that will follow her breakout debut, which has been certified an incredible 6x platinum. Despite my distaste for "American Idol", I do like Underwood, probably because she took the risk and became a straight up country singer instead of a pop star. Anyway, this album will probably contain plenty of big singles, so you're only gonna hear the beginning with its release next week.

WHAT WILL BE NUMBER ONE:

Well, I wasn't around last week, but I definitely would've chosen Kid Rock to hit #1. And hit #1 he did, for the first time in his career. Granted, it was probably with his weakest album, but I have to admit that Rock N Roll Jesus has grown on me a bit. Or the three songs I like have been stuck in my head, which is more accurate. LeAnn Rimes also got some Top 10 love, which…you know, I know I don't listen to country radio much anymore, but I had no idea people were still playing LeAnn Rimes songs. Also debuting were Sara Evans with a just-in-time-for-the-holidays hits package (expect plenty more of those) and Josh Groban with a Christmas album. Yuck.

This week, wow, is anybody's guess. I don't look for Kid to hang on to the top spot, but who will rise? The Boss sold pretty well in week two with Magic, but it will most likely dip below the 100k mark this week. Kid Rock I look to move around 70-80k, making it a tight race between the two. The biggest debuts should be R.E.M.'s live disc (a double disc, no less) and Jimmy Eat World's new CD. Angie Stone has never hit the Top 10 before and The Art Of Love And War should give her that honor in a slow release week. As much as I hate to say it, look for Rascal Flatts' Still Feels Good to reclaim #1. God help us all.

WHAT YOU SHOULD BUY:

There's always something worth buying in the New Release section. Here are my picks:

Alison Krauss & Robert Plant - Raising Sand – Talk about an interesting combination. Look for Krauss to outshine her partner here (as she's wont to do). What else do you expect from one of country's greatest singers ever?

Dwight Yoakam - Dwight Sings Buck - Dwight Yoakam has never been shy about professing his love for Buck Owens, and there's never been an Owens/Yoakam collaboration that hasn't worked. Will it hold together on a full album? Two words for you: "Act Naturally".

Seether - Finding Beauty In Negative Spaces - I smell an upcoming WWE PPV theme!

Rob Zombie - Zombie Live - Just in time for Halloween! Rob Zombie is one of my favorite metal acts going today, and even though most of his live performances have sucked on TV, I have faith that Zombie Live will contain enough overdubs to make it worth our while!

WHAT'S HOT ON THE DIAL?

Billboard has about a million charts, so each week I'm gonna round up the #1s from each format. That way, no matter WHAT station you flip to when not using your presets, you'll be aware of what you might hear. Newly crowned #1s are in bold:

MUSICAL PIECE OF THE WEEK

Back in the day, MTV used to be the premier way to get your music out. These days, it's a cornucopia of vaguely music-related programming, mind-numbing reality TV and exhaustive spring break coverage. Still, change isn't always bad, and that's how we found the latest Piece of the Week. On October 9th, MTV debuted "A Shot At Love with Tila Tequila", a "Bachelor"-type reality series where the big winner gets the prize of bisexual would-be singer Tila Tequila. And boy, what a prize. She's not quite an actress, not quite a model and not quite a singer, but she's our QnD Piece Of The Week:

THE END

Hope you all had fun. Be sure to drop me a line on what you liked, didn't, etc.

Keep your ears to the ground
