The Greatest Rock News Report: 10.24.2007
Posted by Daniel Wilcox on 10.24.2007
More Radiohead news than you could shake a stick at, though why would you want to shake a stick at it? Plus, CKY front man gets beat up and kicked out the band, The Smiths to possibly reform and we've got updates on tours from Iron Maiden to Jonathan Davis to Paramore to (you guessed it) Radiohead.
‘Sup.
Today's been one of those days again where everything just keeps being a bitch. So I'm running short on time and hence there'll be little creative input from me this week, and by "little" I mean none. Still, there's plenty of news for you all to digest and be shocked by. Feel free to send me your thoughts on any of the news items.
One more thing from me – FUCK RADIOHEAD! I'm bored of reading news about that fucking band. Led Zeppelin, be careful because you're right behind ‘em.
Now, the news…
CKY fight and split
CKY frontman Deron Miller has abruptly left the band. This means that the current Viva La Bands Tour is also off. Miller made the announcement via his Myspace page and the rest of the band reportedly plan to carry on without him, a move he has labeled "laughable and illegal".
Here is Miller's statement: i didnt quit CKY. after the san diego show i started getting really depressed and couldnt eat or sleep, so of course i started drinking more and more moderately. then in St. louis i walked to the back of the bus where chad, jess, hanna, matt cole, and our sound guy jeremy were stitting in the back with the door closed. before i walked in, i listened to them one by one trash me for about 10 minutes sh*t talking some extremely personal painful things that were mostly untrue and stupid...the most painless and laughable one being how i spend all day on the computer refreshing the World Under Blood page to get hits~! bottomline...EXTREME JEALOUSY...it was chad's idea to do side projects, and when his didnt pan out he changed his mind. well too late...
WUB started taking off and jess started doing other projects that no one cared about too so when i opened the door to tell them that i heard everything they said, a fight broke out, i slapped jess' hat off of his head and the 2 of them jumped me after i put on my backpack to leave the bus. there must have been a 3rd because i felt at least 5 limbs. chad is obsessed with world under blood. he cant handle that i have 2 things going on at once and he doesnt. i didnt complain when he was selling his emo and R+B shirts at cky shows. he has wanted to beat me up for years and he finally got his chance with jess giving a helping hand. i left the tour to detox and am thinking of returning if i can get and return some apologies because lets face it, cky going on would both be laughable and illegal...so thats what happened. all i wanted to do was finish this f**king record...but greed took over and shows started getting booked and everything was fine until i started getting a little antsy and depressed. then to overhear your "friends" and people you pay talking sh*t about you, it was enough at that point after a month on that bus to stand up for myself. maybe not go nuts, but say or do domething. I NEVER SAID I WAS LEAVING CKY TO PURSUE MY OTHER BAND...thats so f**king stupid. just chad, once again, not being able to get world under blood off of his mind. by Deron now i better get off of my site before the page refreshes!
BTW...I MEANT CKY "GOING ON WITHOUT ME WOULD BE LAUGHABLE AND ILLEGAL" WHO WOULD WRITE THE SONGS??
Korn frontman to tour solo
How does Jonathan Davis, lead singer for multi-platinum, award-winning hard rock band Korn, plan to follow the most successful [The] Family Values Tour yet? By doing something completely different, of course. Fans have come to expect the unexpected of the groundbreaking band and this fall they'll witness another first when Davis steps out on his own for a solo tour.
In this unique concert experience, Davis will draw from a wide variety of material, pulling from the entire Korn repertoire with obscure tracks and some fan favorites, The Queen of the Damned soundtrack and select cover tunes, focusing on songs he's rarely - and in many cases, never - performed on stage before. Trading in amphitheatres for more intimate venues, Davis will launch the tour at the Webster Theatre in Hartford, CT on November 9th. Highlights include stops at New York City's Nokia Theatre Times Square (November 13th) and Los Angeles' Orpheum Theatre (December 4th). The tour wraps up in Las Vegas on December 11th.
"I have wanted to do this forever. Ever since I did the Queen of the Damned and more recently the MTV Unplugged I have wanted to be able to play those songs live. It's going to be acoustic, but still heavy and very intimate. It will totally blow peoples minds." says Davis.

Ministry bassist Paul Raven dies of a heart attack, age 47
October 20, 2007 FRANCE - Ministry's bassist Paul Raven was found dead today in a private home in a small French village on the Swiss border. Initial reports indicate Raven's passing was due to a heart attack. Raven (known also for his work with Killing Joke, Prong) was in Geneva working with French recording artists Treponem Pal on their new release, with Marco Neves, Ted Parsons (Prong) and members of The Young Gods.
Born in Wolverhampton UK on January 16, 1961, Paul Vincent Raven established himself with his work in the seminal post-punk/industrial group Killing Joke when, in 1982 he replaced the original bassist for the band, recording and touring with the group throughout its most commercially successful period, performing on Fire Dances, Night Time and Brighter than a Thousand Suns. Throughout his extensive career, Raven participated in other collaborations including Prong, Murder, Inc., Pigface, Godflesh.
Most recently, Raven was nominated for a 2006 Grammy for Best Metal Performance for his work with Ministry's Al Jourgensen, with whom he had begun working with in late 2005 on the 13th Planet release Rio Grande Blood. After a 2006 World Tour with Ministry, Raven helped Jourgensen and Prong's Tommy Victor pen the September 18, 2006 Ministry release The Last Sucker, Ministry's final studio release.
States Jourgensen: "I am in total shock. The world of music is a sadder, emptier place. Not only was Raven an extraordinary talent, but one of my closest dearest friends. Our condolences and prayers go to his immediate family. He will be truly missed by artists, musicians and his fans the world over.
The one consolation is knowing Raven's already hooked up with the right people and started a new project in the After Life. God's speed, Raven. Rest In Peace, you fucking pirate."
Raven's newest project, Mob Research, featuring members of Warrior Soul and The Mission UK, and schedule for release on 13th Planet Records in 2008, was in the final mixing and mastering phases at the time of Raven's sudden and unexpected passing.
A memorial dedicated to the Life and Art of Paul Raven can be found at www.thirteenthplanet.com
The Smiths to reform?
Johnny Marr says he is not opposed to a Smiths reunion leaving the door open for the most important alternative rock band to emerge from the British indie scene of the 1980s to reform.
The former guitarist with the indie legends, currently touring with Modest Mouse, refused to rule out working with Morrissey again in a new interview.
His comments are the latest twist to a tale that recently saw the band offered millions of dollars to get back together for live dates.
Speaking to the BBC, Marr was unusually positive, commenting "stranger things have happened so, you know, who knows?"
"It's no biggy. Maybe we will in 10 or 15 years time when we all need to for whatever reasons, but right now Morrissey is doing his thing and I'm doing mine, so that's the answer really", he said.
The lynchpins, Marr and Morrissey, have apparently "semi-agreed" to put together a long-awaited Smiths box-set in the coming months.
Marr confirmed the news earlier this month when receiving an Honorary Patronage from Trinity College's Philosophical Society in Dublin.
Radiohead set to join indie label?
Radiohead is reportedly close to signing a deal to release their new album 'In Rainbows' independently.
According to the New York Times, the band is on the verge of signing a deal to release the CD version of the album in the US with ATO Records, which is headed by Coran Capshaw -- Dave Matthews Band's manager and co-owner.Under the proposed deal, Radiohead would license the album for a specified period of time while retaining ownership of the recording.
Major labels including Warner Brothers Records, Columbia Records and Starbucks were reportedly engaged in a bidding war for the album, but it looks as though Radiohead will be leaving the major labels behind for a more independent business model. It also looks likely that British label XL Recordings will market the album internationally.
…And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Our Dead leave Interscope
And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead has announced their departure from long-time major label, Interscope. The band signed to the major after the release of Madonna and released their most well-received album, Source Tags and Codes via the major in 2002. The band will be on the road with Dethklok beginning at the end of this month and a promising a return to the studio early next year to record their new album.
Fall Out Boy singer talks about the next album
Fall Out Boy has "an album's worth of material" ready, according to frontman Patrick Stump. But don't expect to see the group's fifth album any time soon.
"There's always something that hits me, like a sense of urgency -- NOW is the time for an album -- and we're not there yet," Stump tells Billboard.com. "I just get this kind of wanderlust of some kind to go back into a studio. It's always a very defined point."
And, Stump says, he still thinks there's life left in Fall Out Boy's platinum "Infinity on High," which isn't even nine months old and recently spawned a new single, "I'm Like a Lawyer With the Way I'm Always Trying to get You Off (Me + You)."
"I don't really feel like we're done with this one yet," Stump notes. "I feel like it's still in its cycle. There's a lot of songs on it I'm really proud of. I don't think we have one really monster hit on this record like "Sugar," but there are a lot of really strong individual songs. If a song is effective enough it'll work as a single, and I think we have a lot of effective songs that aren't necessarily monsters."
Meanwhile, Stump says the new Fall Out Boy material takes the group in "some very different directions. There's lots of really bizarre ideas on there, everything from folk to ... actually, I was experimenting with piano phases, like Steve Reich, the composer. There'll be some weird stuff, but at the end of the day, it's probably just gonna be a pop record."
Fall Out Boy has just started its Young Wild Things tour with Cute Is What We Aim For, Plain White T's and Gym Class Heroes. Stump, who recently produced the new Cobra Starship album, is helming Gym Class Heroes' next release -- along with two other projects.
He also recently filmed a guest spot on "Law & Order" which will air in February. "I've been begging forever, 'cause I'm just a fan," he says. "Somehow they let me do it."
Kid Rock having more legal troubles
Kid Rock was arrested for fighting in a Waffle House restaurant on Saturday (20.10.07).
The 36-year-old singer, who had earlier played at Atlanta venue The Tabernacle, was dining with his entourage at a nearby branch of the fast food restaurant when Rock became involved in a brawl with a male customer.
Mekka Parish, a spokeswoman for DeKalb County Police Department, said: "Kid Rock and five members of his entourage were involved in a fight with a male customer inside the Waffle House. A male customer recognised a woman with the party and exchanged words with her.
"It escalated to a physical altercation between Kid Rock and that male customer, and moved outside to the parking lot. At one point the customer punched out a restaurant window."
Police were called after the 'Cowboy' singer had left the restaurant. Rock's tour bus was stopped about a mile from the Waffle House and he, along with five members of his entourage, were taken into custody and charged with a misdemeanour charge of simple battery.
After spending 12 hours in DeKalb County Jail, Rock was released on Sunday evening (21.10.07) after posting $1,000 bail.
The male customer involved in the tussle was charged with a felony for smashing the window.
Radiohead and iTunes go to war
Radiohead and iTunes look set for battle.
One of the band's older recordings was posted online, reportedly without authorisation from the band.
iTunes and Radiohead have had a difficult relationship since refusing to allow their recordings to be sold as individual tracks.
New album, "In Rainbows", is currently only available through the band's own website, a move which has sent shock waves through the music industry.
However, their 1994 "My Iron Lung" EP is currently reportedly being sold on iTunes, a move which is expected to prompt action from Radiohead.
A spokesman for the group has informed Music Week that the store is not legally permitted to offer their music and will be reporting the news to their management team.
Radiohead remain, along with The Beatles, one of the few major acts who do not work with iTunes, having previously fallen out with them over "Kid A" in 2005.
FOB, Panic! And Gym Class Heroes' tracks to go jazz
Fall Out Boy, Panic! At The Disco and Gym Glass Heroes are to have their songs turned into jazz cover versions by work colleague Doug Neumann for an upcoming CD.
The general manager of Crush Management, wants to put out his own jazz-arranged versions of the chart-toppers' tunes.
Radiohead set for World tour in 2008
Just when you thought that all of the Radiohead attention would slow down about now, the band has offered yet another reason to keep everyone talking. After all of the hoopla surrounding the release of their 7th studio gem, In Rainbows, Radiohead have announced plans for an upcoming world tour.
While details are very limited, Billboard.com can confirm that starting in May 2008, the band will embark on a worldwide trek that plans to target larger scale venues compared to last summer's tour.
Iron Maiden set to announce more tour dates
IRON MAIDEN have made a very brief announcement, stating that the band will be announcing more tour dates on Halloween (October 31st).
