Dancing About Architecture 11.13.07
Posted by Ian Wright on 11.13.2007

The bit at the start

Good day, I'm less rushed today so I should be able to get more news content in this week.

While not as insanely gig heavy as the previous week I still caught a couple of shows in the past seven days. Last Monday saw Deerhunter make their debut in Ireland. Quite the aural assault of washed out vocals, shockingly danceable basslines and rack tomless drumming. In a word "awesome". The best concert I'd seen in that particular venue in over a year probably.

After the nutso, loud, crazy shit I'd gone to in the previous days Friday was a bit of a change of pace with Lambchop's Kurt Wagner playing solo. It was kind of a pleasure to just sit down, not have to "do the chin stroke" and enjoy a guy who over the course of his career has written some amazing songs.

This week is shaping up to not be terribly busy gig wise, I'll give Widow City a listen today before deciding whether or not to see the Fiery Furnaces tonight and on Friday I'll be seeing the wonderful Fight Like Apes at their Vinyl launch.

Beg, borrow, buy, steal or download this album.

Cadence Weapon – Breaking Kayfabe

My hip-hop record of the year. I've not heard many.

You news, you lose

Oh no, I'm all sticky. At least there's no girls around.

Kevin Shields is such a (musical) cock tease (What? You mean you don't have a musical cock). The fucker has been dropping all sorts of hints for the past year and apparently telling people that he runs into around London that there will be an MBV reunion/new record at some point. But up until now there's been little in the way of official announcements.

However in an interview with Vice's vbs.tv programme Soft Focus Shields revealed that there will be a new My Bloody Valentine record this year (what the fuck Kev, it's November already).

The interview will be viewable in full from Monday evening but Shields did tell interviewer Ian Svenonius (great name dude), "We were making a record in the 90s, around when the band broke up in 1995...and I continued with Bilinda [Butcher, guitarist/vocalist]. We kinda made...most of an album...

"[The new album is] going to be this 96/97 half-finished record finished, and then a compilation of stuff we did before that in 1993–94, and a little bit of new stuff.

"I pretty much know what the one that's going to come out this year is going to sound like because it's already pretty much three-quarters done already...it sounds like what we sounded like-- different but not radically different. People will go, 'Yeah, it sounds like My Bloody Valentine.'"

Correction: I originally said that vbs.tv was part of Vice records, in fact both are under the umbrella of VICE, which is a magazine.

Best pitchfork headline ever.

"Naked Man Tasered in the Ass at Girl Talk Show"? You know I'm covering that.

My one experience of Girl Talk live happened in San Francisco around this time last year when I walked into the room he was playing at a one day festival thing about 15 minutes after his set had been due to start. In that time period he'd managed to incite a stage invasion, enrage the security, and with a few hundred people up on stage with him had his set kicked.

But was happened over the weekend at the Gargoyle club at Washington University in St. Louis blows that shit out of the water. On Friday night the usual Girl Talk madness (see above) was going on and a good time being had by all, but as usual one guy has to ruin it for everyone. According to an e-mail to Pitchfork, "There was one 20-something (who seemed to be under the influence of something) who kept on causing problems. He threatened basically everyone around him. Attendees asked the bouncers to remove him several times, but they were basically unsuccessful. This person starting a lot of pushing bouts during the show. There were several chants by the crowd to get this one man out. He also jumped up on stage once after everyone else had gotten off."

Eventually security tried to deal with the man but according to the Student Life newspaper "He then shoved a security guard and pulled down his pants."

Eventually campus cops were called and according to Student Life "When WUPD arrived they repeatedly told the man to pull up his pants or face arrest. The student refused and an officer attempted to handcuff him. When the student struggled to resist being handcuffed, the officer pulled out his Taser and threatened to use it if the student did not comply. The man continued to resist and was Tasered."

In the ass …

No really.

That's funny.

Anyway, other stuff happened after that with the show getting called off and moving to a frat house. But the important thing is this.

A guy

got tasered

in the ass.

Johnny Knoxville never thought of that.

ATP ATP ATP.

Right we have a winner. Unless there's an insane increase in the quality of the EITS curated event I'll be heading over to England in May for ATP vs. Pitchfork. The event already had the lead in terms of lineup quality but over the past 7 days Deerhunter (who, like I said earlier are fantastic live), The Hold Steady (who I played guitar with on stage in Dublin in February), Black Lips (who I've got nothing to say about), and Wooden Shijps (who need to spell check) have joined the lineup.

Plus there's always the opportunity to meet your most disliked pretentious Pitchfork reviewer and kick him in the face.

The face kicking takes place from May 9-11 in Camber Sands in Sussex. It's actually a pretty desolate and depressing place. But don't let that stop you.

Chosen by Pitchfork:

The Hold Steady
Black Lips
Hot Chip
Les Savy Fav
No Age
Of Montreal
Man Man
Los Campesinos!
Caribou
Glass Candy
Dirty Projectors

Chosen by ATP:

Deerhunter
Wooden Shjips
Meat Puppets
The Black Angels
Shit and Shine
Sebadoh
Ween
Pissed Jeans
Fuck Buttons
Apse

However, if you are tempted by the EITS curated event Polvo are (partially, different drummer) reforming for it.

What powers are they exactly?

Matador have announced that a number of changes to the tracklisting of the upcoming Cat Power covers collection Jukebox have been made since the initial announcement of what would be on the record. Gone from the collection is Creedence's "Fortunate Son" and Chips Moman and Dan Penn's "Dark End of the Street" (aww shit, Chan could've killed with that song) and in comes Jessie Mae Hemphill's "Lord, Help the Poor and Needy" and Joni Mitchell's "Blue". In addition the first run of the album will come with a 5 song bonus disc which comes in a "limited edition silver foil deluxe package," the tracklisting for which is below the main album …

Tracklisting:

01 New York (Frank Sinatra)
02 Ramblin' (Wo)man (Hank Williams)

Radiohead's former record company to band, new label(s) … "FUCK YOU".

Come December 10th each of Radiohead 6 albums released on Parlophone/ EMI as well and the I might be wrong live EP. The limited edition CD version of the set comes in new digipack packaging featuring the original album artworks. Also available is a limited edition bear shaped memory stick that will feature all the albums on high quality .WAV format.

It might be a nice package and all but the idea seems a little redundant, anyone interested in the albums probably already has them and digipack boxing isn't going to make me fork out for them a second time (a third in the case of The Bends, I lost my first copy on a subway in NYC 2 years ago) so why bother (a reissue on vinyl might be a different story). Well it could have something to do with the fact that Radiohead are no longer on Parlophone and other labels (XL and it was announced ATO/Side One) are set to release the physical version of the album on New Years Eve/January 2nd depending on where you live and Parlophone are in the mood to milk the cash cow (bear?) while they're still on many people's radars. It's certainly not the band's idea (though they will certainly benefit financially from the endeavour) as was explained on Boingboing last week …

A publicity-shy reader writes, "I think people need to know that the band isn't some greed machine. I can tell you with 100% certainty that EMI is putting out all those reissues without the band's participation, blessing, permission or involvement at all. They are doing it as retribution for the band's decision not to go with them in releasing the new album. Despite their contract being expired, EMI had been counting on the revenue from the forthcoming album. When the band put out the digital version of the album themselves, EMI threatened them with re-releasing their entire catalog on the same day the discbox of IN RAINBOWS was being sent out, Dec 10, unless the band gave EMI the standard physical release of the album. Of course the band/managers told EMI to piss off and were appalled that at such an important point in the band's career that their former partners would do this to them."
