Something like sixteen long years ago, which is a lifetime for many of you who are going to read this, a band from Seattle, Washington, released an epic album by the name of Ten. Pearl Jam, since then, has tried to hang on to that fame that the grunge scene fueled for them. As you all know, or should know, flannel is dead, but Pearl Jam and Eddie Vedder are not. They've proved time and time again that Vedder is a quality lyricist and vocalist, despite dwindling record sales over the years.
Vedder has also demonstrates that he can cover a song and add such vitality to it. Back in 1999, Pearl Jam covered "Last Kiss", originally of Wayne Cochran and the C.C. Riders. Earlier this year, Vedder sang "Love, Reign O'er Me," same as the movie that it was the single from. Now, Vedder did an entire album's worth of vocals for the movie Into the Wild, including this Indio track "Hard Sun."
I've heard it a bunch on the radio now, and it's steadily climbing the charts. However, is the song worth all the attention? Is Vedder washed up? I disagree with both of those questions with a resounding "Hell No." The first couple times I heard the song, I shrugged it off as just more rock junk on the radio. However, after thinking about it, Vedder is too much of an iconic figure in the music industry still. And with this track, he proves that he still has the vocal range that is necessary to work in this struggling market. In this very folky single, Vedder just smoothly croons,"There's a big/a big hard sun/beating on the big people/in the big hard world." I think the payoff, though, is with the there sheer magnitude of the expression of Vedder. You can tell his heart is in it, and it won me over. A fantastic track for a wondrous movie.
Coheed and Cambria is redefining big hair bands. Or they need to stop sticking paperclips into electrical sockets. Either way, this progressive rock band from Kingston, NY, is back again with a new album Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star IV, Volume Two: No World for Tomorrow. The second volume has been out for a couple months now, and this single "Running Free" is doing everything in its power to support the album. It peaked at a much deserved Number 6, back in October.
This week, "Running Free" breaks into the Top 20 on the Modern Rock charts. I find that the song is going to propel Cambria, hopefully, to their first top 10 Rock hit. This track deserves this for many reasons. First of all, it's fresher than most things out there right now. I am so tired of hearing Linkin Park and old Metallica, and I find myself looking for an up-tempo song that really moves through itself effortlessly. Claudio Sanchez and his larger-than-life hairdo do their best to shake that emo typecast they've endured since A Flavor House Atlantic, and I find that they're successful. The most memorable part of the song, aside from the chorus, is the first verse. Sanchez sings, "All non-believers stand aside and fear/A new day's marching through the door/How could you ever think you'd make it here?/Did it bleed? Was it sore?/through the struggles you've endured."
