Dancing About Architecture 12.04.07

The bit at the start

Oh man I'm so tired, and sore, but mainly tired. But at the same time happy.

All I can say is that you've ever had the opportunity to see Dan Deacon live and passed it up you are poorer as a human being.

Beg, borrow, buy, steal or download this album.

Pavement – Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain

I prefer Slanted and Enchanted but this is also outstanding.

You news, you lose

Obligatory Radiohead top story.

First off, in case you're weren't aware the In Rainbows discboxes started arriving in people's homes today. So obviously that means that the bonus CD2 is now available of the internet for resourceful people to find. I'm in the middle of the first listen to the second song so it's far too early to make a judgement but the general consensus seems to be "I can see why this was left off the album."

Anyway the details began to emerge in the past week about the first European dates for the band's tour next year. This initial announcement mainly gave the cities they'd be playing with no firm date or venue but things have begun to get a bit clearer with a number of the dates being solidly confirmed and at present here's the projected itinerary:

06-?? Dublin, Ireland – TBA (I've been tipped off that that'll take place in Malahide castle and looking at the logistics of getting to Paris it'll probably take place)
06-09 Paris, France - Bercy
06-10 Paris, France - Bercy
06-?? Barcelona, Spain - TBA
06-14 Nimes, France - Arenes
06-18 Milan, Italy - Civica Arena
06-20 Neuhausen ob Eck, Germany - Southside Festival
06-22 Scheeßel, Germany - Hurricane Festival
06-?? London, England - TBA (2 dates)
06-?? Glasgow, Scotland - TBA
06-?? Manchester, England - TBA
07-01 Amsterdam, Netherlands - Westerpark
07-03 Roskilde, Denmark - Roskilde Festival
07-03-06 Werchter, Belgium - Rock Werchter Festival
07-08 Berlin, Germany - Wuhlheide

Not as good as the Big Day Out lineup.

Australia's travelling Big Day Out Festival, which boasts amongst its lineup Arcade Fire, The National and LCD Soundsystem is mostly long sold out at this point. However if you're down under and desperate for festival entertainment the Aussie V-Fest kicks off at the end of March and hits 4 cities and the initial lineup was announced in the past few days with The Smashing Pumpkins, the Jesus and Mary Chain, Queens of the Stone Age, Duran Duran, CSS, Tough Alliance, Presets and Plug-In City will be at all four dates with Air and the execrable Mika joining the line-up for the first 2 dates. There's still plenty of bands to be announced though. But if they're of a similar calibre as those already announced I wouldn't bother my arse personally.

Stay at home:

03-29 Sydney, Australia - Centennial Park
03-30 Gold Coast, Australia - Avica Resort
04-05 Melbourne, Australia - Showgrounds
04-06 Perth, Australia - Esplanade

I want this record to happen so bad I can taste it.

I reported last week on the likelihood of a new My Bloody Valentine album in the coming months (no way will it be out by years end) and how in talking to Billboard the band's manager Vinita Joshi implied that MBV might follow Radiohead's model for In Rainbows and release the album digitally however Joshi ruled out the "pay what you want" part of Radiohead's release. However things have become a bit clearer since then and wired spoke to Joshi last week who attempted to set the record straight saying, In the interview with Billboard I stated that the forthcoming MBV album will more than likely be self-released.

That does not equate to a digital only release, which the article states.

Whilst I understand many bands can self-release via digital shops, that is not the plan.

In fact we see digital as a far inferior format and the band would NEVER plan to release an album exclusively in a digital format.

I was quite upset to be misquoted when I took the time to talk to the journalist in question.

Oh and I still can't wait to see them in London next year.

ATP, ATP, ATP.

Well May draws ever closer and the lineup for that month's pair of ATP's gets ever better and better.

May 9-11th's ATP vs. Pitchfork Festival in Camber Sands has seen the addition of Jens Lekman, A place to bury strangers, Yeasayer, Redd Kross and Marissa Nadler. So the lineup now looks like this:

Chosen by Pitchfork:

Jens Lekman
A Place to Bury Strangers
Yeasayer
The Hold Steady
Black Lips
Hot Chip
Les Savy Fav
No Age
Of Montreal
Man Man
Los Campesinos!
Caribou
Glass Candy
Dirty Projectors

Chosen by ATP:

Redd Kross
Marissa Nadler
Deerhunter
Wooden Shjips
Meat Puppets
The Black Angels
Shit and Shine
Sebadoh
Ween
Pissed Jeans
Fuck Buttons
Apse

Lekman has also been added to the Explosions In The Sky curated ATP taking place in Butlins Minehead from May 16-18 as well as Silver Jews which just goes to demonstrate that even if a band don't seem like likely headliners for the festival is doesn't mean that they can't pick some fantastic bands to play. The lineup for this weekend looks like this:

EXPLOSIONS IN THE SKY »
BROKEN SOCIAL SCENE »
IRON AND WINE
DINOSAUR JR »
ADEM
....AND YOU WILL KNOW US BY THE TRAIL OF THE DEAD
POLVO »
ANIMAL COLLECTIVE »
A HAWK AND A HACKSAW »
ELUVIUM »
OLA PODRIDA »
LAZARUS »
THE PAPER CHASE »
FOUR TET »
WESTERN KEYS »
SILVER JEWS
JENS LEKMAN
MONO
TONY TEARDROP
THE DRIFT
GHOSTFACE KILLAH

On a semi related note.

Portishead are reforming to curate this month's ATP Nightmare Before Christmas. They've also got a new (only their third) album in the works and in the past week it was revealed that it will come out in April of next year in the UK with no solid release plans for the US set yet though with the whole torrent thing it'd be pretty dumb for them not to have the dates very close to each other.

No other details have been announced but the working title for the album back in 2003 was said to be Alien.

Speaking of which, is it just me or is that new AvP film looking like it'll be even worse than the last one. How could anyone possible mess that idea up?

It just beggars belief.

Writing under the influence

Without which this column would not have been possible:

Talk Radio
Radiohead – In Rainbows (Bonus disc)
Liars - Liars

The bit at the end

Thanks to the amazing coolness of one of Dublin's smaller promoters liasing with venues and changing stage times about tonight (Tuesday) I'll be attending 2 shows. First up is Thurston Moore who, thanks to a curfew will have to be finished by 10:30. Then it'll be down to my favourite venue in the world to catch Liars hitting the stage at 10:45.

Mozza is suing the NME, is there a way for both to lose?

Semi permanent plug for my blog. In the past week there's been more detailed thoughts about Dan Deacon live, the usual football stuff, a lengthy ode to Okkervil River (with loads of MP3's) and some other stuff. If you like Radiohead you should click the link.
