All You Cannot Live Without 01.07.08: Beginning Year Three
Posted by Ben Czajkowski on 01.07.2008

www.411mania.com

Well, welcome to Y3 for this column. It's been a hell of a ride so far, and I can't believe that after writing nearly 100 columns, I am still going strong. Normally, I get bored quickly when I start projects, but now I cannot imagine my life without doing this. Everyone who writes me keeps giving me renewed spirit to write this hunk of shit every week. I appreciate everyone that reads this; thank you for everyone who checks in every week for updates, especially for albums and touring.

I'd like to extend thanks to all of the people who have helped me through two years. I apologize if I miss anyone. Thanks, first off, to Brandon Ratliff for allowing me the initial opportunity to even start this. Thanks to Ashish, Mitch Michaels, Brian Berry, Dan Haggerty, Dan Marsicano, Jeff Modzelewski (who I miss dearly), Rhett Walker, and Mike Horvath. To all my readers, I appreciate the loyalty that you have shown over the years. It has not gone unnoticed.

Enjoy the updated features.

Rock News of All You Newbs

Nine Inch Nails front-man Trent Reznor has posted some interesting sale numbers. They are the download and sales numbers for The Inevitable Rise and Liberation of Niggy Tardust, the Saul Williams album he produced, helped release and promote. The album was originally posted on November 1 and offered for free as a lower quality, 192kbps MP3 download, or $5 for a higher fidelity 320kbps MP3 or FLAC version. According to Reznor, since November 1, 154,449 people had downloaded the record; of those, only 28,322, or 18.3%, chose to pay anything for it. Of those paying, 3220 chose 192kbps MP3, 19,764 chose 320kbps MP3 and 5338 chose FLAC.

"Here's what I was thinking: Fans are interested in music as soon as it's available (that's a good thing, remember) and usually that's a leak from the label's manufacturing plants," he wrote. "Offering the record digitally as its first appearance in the marketplace eliminates that problem. I thought if you offered the whole record free at reasonable quality — no strings attached — and offered a hassle free way to show support that clearly goes straight to the artists who made it at an unquestionably low price, people would "do the right thing."

Reznor goes on to state that he is conflicted about the numbers; while he was disheartened that so few chose to pay, he is also excited that more people are hearing Williams' music.

The tentative track listing has been announced for the Cavalera Conspiracy's (aka Max and Igor Cavalera along with members of Soulfly and Gojira) forthcoming Roadrunner debut Inflikted:

01 - "Inflikted"
02 - "Sanctuary"
03 - "Terrorize"
04 - "Dark Ark"
05 - "Ultra-Violent"
06 - "Hex"
07 - "The Doom Of All Fires"
08 - "Bloodbrawl"
09 - "The Exorcist" (or "Hearts Of Darkness")
10 - "Nevertrust"
11 - "Must Kill"

The album is expected out on March 25 and will feature a cameo Rex Brown of Pantera/Down fame. Meanwhile, the track "Sanctuary" has been tapped as the first single with a video for it said to be in the works. "Sanctuary" is expected to launch at radio, etc. on March 3.

ASHES dIVIDE, the new group headed by A Perfect Circle mastermind Billy Howerdel, have chosen 'their' track "The Stone" to serve as their first single with a January 22 impact date slated. ASHES dIVIDE's debut album will see a March release date.

Staind are planning a "June-ish" release for their new studio album. A supporting tour will kick off in April.

R.E.M. have titled their new album Accelerate. The album, which is the band's fourteen studio album, is due out on April 1. A spring tour is in the works.

Here's a surprise for everyone. Not. Ill Nino are now planning a tentative February 5 release date for their new album Enigma. I have completely lost faith in Cement Shoes, Ill Nino's label, to actually put out a record on time. Get it together!

Unearth are shooting to have their new album in stores this fall. It will be preceded by an as-yet untitled double disc DVD release on March 4 which will feature one disc focusing on the band's live shows and another documenting the group's history as a band.

Story of the Year are planning a April 22 release for the as-yet-untitled third album. The album will be the first released via their new record label, Epitaph Records. A new DVD is also in the works.

Arson Anthem, a group which features Phil Anselmo of Down/Pantera fame on guitars alongside Hank Williams III on drums (ex-Superjoint Ritual, etc.,) Colin Yeo on bass and Mike Williams of Eyehategod fame on vocals, have set the track listing to their debut self-titled effort:

01 - "Year Of The Fork"
02 - "Doomed Morale"
03 - "Bunker Life"
04 - "Hammer Them Out"
05 - "Wrecked Like Clockwork"
06 - "Cops Shoot Coke"
07 - "The Avoider"
08 - "Sri Lankan medication"

The outing will arrive in stores on February 19.

Light This City have revealed that they plan to spend the bulk of this month writing new material for their next album which they hope to have out in September 2008.

Hopesfall have decided to call it a day. As always, a statement followed the news:

Word on the street is Hopesfall has broken up. Well.... " The one thing you can count on is word on the street ya, That's solid," That's a line from one of my favorite movies which stars one christopher walken. Anyway HF has broken up and we have all moved on to other things in our lives. Why the break up? Well it's a long story. To long for myspace but i will say this. I hate Trustkill and it's owner. Hahahaha. He's not the reason we broke up but i (we) do hate him. Anyway we have posted some new songs. 1 song that TK took off the record with out asking us or even telling us. What a bunch of assholes huh!? So you can download "Saskatchewan" if you'd like. We have a brand new song that we might post on here very soon. It's with out vocals but we like it a lot! It's a nice little gem.
I have a bunch of demos from mag north also that i will post. a few are songs that we didn't even record so that should be fun huh!?

Terror have revealed in a recent update that their new album, which they will begin recording in February with producer Zeuss (Shadows Fall, Hatebreed), will be released by an as-yet undetermined new label rather than Trustkill. As previously reported, a live CD of the bands June 10th, 2004 performance at the now-defunct CBGB's in New York City, NY, titled Live At CBGB's, will see a release on March 18.

HORSE the band are planning to embark on a world tour booked by themselves. Here's what the band had to say on the matter:

"Three years ago we booked a three-month, eight country tour with no booking agency, manager, or CD in stores. It was the funnest tour we have ever done. 3 years and 11 professional package tours later, we've become disillusioned, bad-attitude nerds and pariahs of the established music industry. FUCK IT.
We are currently planning a 40-country tour of Earth. We are booking the tour by ourselves, and going by ourselves because everyone is scared of us and no one will let us play their tours because we are too wild and crazy. In addition, no booking agencies will book shows for us on foreign soil because we have no "tour history on the books" or "soundscans" or "albums in stores". It is time to once again take matters into our own hands, go off the beaten track, and show the music industry that they don't matter anymore because of the INTERNET. We hope to be an inspiration to all young bands with honest dreams and the willingness to say "FUCK IT" to the shitty, boring, timid, sterile conventions that have slimed their way into our scene with the recent commercialization and homogenization of underground music. We will be producing a TV show/movie about recklessly circling the globe playing volatile shows, eating weird new foods, meeting new races and species, seeing the marvels of nature and man, narrowly escaping tragedy (or not escaping it), all while teetering on the brink of alcoholism and mental illness and sharing the language of music that unites us all! "

The band hope to play pretty much anywhere, from Japan, Australia, Europe, The Middle East and more. In turn, they have also posted the following:

"If you want to book a show or throw us a reliable contact of someone who can, email us at horsethebooking@gmail.com. If you want to help promote a show in your country (flier, write, burn CDs and give them to people), email horsethebooking@gmail.com. If you're interested in press or promotional materials, email us at h2theb@gmail.com. We will send to any country. If you are interested in producing, filming, or helping out in any way with the TV show (you know it is going to be the next Hills!), email h2theb@gmail.com. If you are interested in sponsoring the tour, email h2theb@gmail.com. We are looking for any and all sponsors, especially airlines. If you are a writer for a magazine and want to write a feature or the Great American Novel, email h2theb@gmail.com. We need all the help we can get, but we know we can do it using the power of the INTERNET, MUSIC, and SELF-RELIANCE!"

Three new songs from This Is Hell's forthcoming album Misfortunes can be sampled online here. Misfortunes will see a February 19 release date and feature the following track listing:

01 - "Reckless"
02 - "Infected"
03 - "Disciples"
04 - "In Shambles"
05 - "Realization: Remorse"
06 - "Without Closure"
07 - "Remnants"
08 - "Resuscitate"
09 - "Fearless Vampires"
10 - "You Are The Antithesis"
11 - "End Of An Era"
12 - "Memoirs"
13 - "Last Days Campaign"

A 12" version of the album will also see a release and it will feature a bonus cover of the Cro-Mags' "Show You No Mercy".

Tool/Puscifer frontman Maynard James Keenan recently checked in and revealed that a DVD for Puscifer's track "Queen B" will see a January 8 release date. His full update is as follows:

"Happy New Year, Mouse Club. The Queen B. DVD is out on Tuesday. Limited edition, so get them while they last. Also working on a 7" release for Queen B. Limited as well. Meats claims the DoZo video is coming along. I've seen some of the animation and I have to say, it looks damn fine. Lustmord is working on some Dub mixes. Most likely we'll release it exclusively on vinyl and on iTunes. Mat and I are finishing up some finishing touches on a couple unreleased tracks to be included on the V is for Vagina 12" vinyl. I'm sure there are a few more things going on, but i just ate some X-Mas candy so I can't seem to concentrate. More later once my blood sugar stabilizes."

Warning: Touring Updates May Lead To Spontaneous Moshing
