Rock News For All You Newbs

Monday morning, after I posted last week's column, my friend bombards me with IMs about this news bit: Nine Inch Nails released a 36 track instrumental album dubbed Ghosts I – IV. It was released to the internet via free download through the NIN website or through bittorrent. Reznor says,

"I've been considering and wanting to make this kind of record for years, but by its very nature it wouldn't have made sense until this point. This collection of music is the result of working from a very visual perspective - dressing imagined locations and scenarios with sound and texture; a soundtrack for daydreams. I'm very pleased with the result and the ability to present it directly to you without interference. I hope you enjoy the first four volumes of Ghosts."

The first nine tracks are free, and people are encouraged to use them in every form of media (podcasts, trailers, etc). A physical release of Ghosts I-IV will hit stores on April 8. Pick it up free over at nin.com. The effort is expected to see a release through what is said to be band frontman Trent Reznor's new label, The Null Corporation, which will reportedly see distribution through Red.

Facebook has approached major labels about launching some type of music service, according to the Financial Times. The talks were described as "preliminary" and they come not long after major labels held similar talks with rival networking site MySpace.

Korn guitarist James 'Munky' Shaffer has launched a new project dubbed Fear And The Nervous System, with the following line-up:

James 'Munky' Shaffer - guitars/vocals
Wes Borland (Black Light Burns/Limp Bizkit) - guitars
Billy Gould (ex-Faith No More) - bass
Brooks Wackerman (Bad Religion) - drums/percussion
Leopold Ross - programming/guitars
Zach Baird - keyboards/programming

The band will release their debut album on August 8 through Munky's own Emotional Syphon Recordings. The effort is expected to feature production from Shaffer himself alongside Ross Robinson and Jim Monti. Additional production will be provided by Tim Harkins, Leopold Ross and Danny Lohner.

Candlebox will release a new live album, entitled Alive in Seattle, on April 1 and is expected to be followed by a live DVD. The band entered the studio in December to work on their fourth studio album, which is expected to hit stores in June.

Unwritten Law have signed a new record deal with Suburban Noize Records. The band will be filming their March 7th concert at the Key Club in Hollywood, CA for a DVD release scheduled to be released later this year. A new studio album is due out in late 2008.

Mindless Self Indulgence's new album If will be released on April 29 in a variety of formats, including a standard edition, a deluxe CD/DVD edition, a clean/edited edition and a vinyl edition.

A trailer for Atreyu's upcoming extended edition CD/DVD reissue of their latest album Lead Sails Paper Anchor can be found online here. The new version of the album will see an April 22 release date.

Major labels appear to be once again embracing vinyl with some catalog reissues being planned in the near future. April 15 will reportedly see 12" vinyl editions of Lamb Of God's Sacrament and Ashes Of The Wake issued. Meanwhile, Warner will be releasing deluxe and standard vinyl reissues of Metallica's Kill 'Em All and Ride The Lightning.

God Forbid entered the studio this week to begin recording their as-yet untitled new album with producer Eric Rachel (Atreyu, The Dillinger Escape Plan). Speaking on the sessions, band guitarist/backing vocalist Doc Coyle had the following to say:

"Here we are! We have begun recording the new GOD FORBID album at Trax East in South River, NJ with Eric Rachel. Everyone in the band is really focused on this record and super excited about the songs. We did a very in depth pre-production for the last 2 weeks, where a lot of kinks have been worked out. There is more preparation for this album and any previous one. We have to give serious thanks to Steve Lagudi, who brought an entire studio to John's house to record pre-pro, and busted his ass engineering and tracking for two weeks. The material is varied and challenging, and I definitely feel another shift in the trajectory of our sound. We will be doing a studio blog keeping everyone posted about the progress, and also video taping as much as possible."

Track listing for Everclear's upcoming cover album The Vegas Years has been announced. The album will be release on April 15, the band's original record label from 1994 to 2004.
Track listing is as follows:

Warning: Touring Updates May Lead To Spontaneous Moshing

Serj Tankian (System Of A Down) and Tom Morello (Rage Against The Machine) are putting together a tour for their politically active "Axis Of Justice" organization this spring. In addition to the concerts, Morello says that a second day in each city will be devoted to "kind of like an activist workshop for fans and musicians. And the other day we're gonna play a kick-ass show."

Hatebreed and Type O Negative are rumored to be the main participants in an upcoming Jagermeister-backed trek which will kick off late this spring/early this summer. More bands are presently being secured for the bill with an announcement likely to be made in the coming weeks.

Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails are set to headline this year's Lollapalooza, according to the Chicago Tribune. Although the festival's lineup won't be announced for several more weeks, "industry sources" state that both bands have been booked for this year's Lollapalozza, which is set for August 1st-3rd in Chicago's Grant Park.

Almost Easy on Guitar Hero would be pretty sweet, because one of the riffs on that song is awesome. The other two songs in that pack are great too, would be a good pick up if I had a 360 and GH3, along with the free Dropkick Murphys one that'll be out on St. Patricks Day

Fear and the Nervous System sounds pretty interesting - any band with participation from Munky, Wes Borland, and to some extent Danny Lohner, definitely piques my interest.
