Quick ‘n’ Dirty Music News: 03.27.08

It’s the QnD Wrestlemania PREVIEW – Velvet Revolver EXPLODES, the World Is Watching Britney, The Game is hoping his retirement will be an Event Of Epic Proportions, Kylie Minogue’s new album is Ten Years In The Making, Kelly Rowland preparing to get (d)X-rated, T.I. is feeling the Heat and Amy Winehouse’s drug abuse is reaching a Ragin’ Climax, the most in-depth look at Mania’s 24-man Battle Royal on the net, plus chart news, new albums by George Strait and others, and WWE DIVAS are our Pieces of the Week!
Welcome one and all to a very SPECIAL Quick ‘n' Dirty News. As always, I'm your foul-mouthed and largely insensitive host Mitch Michaels.
If this is your very first time coming to 411, it just may surprise you that this weekend marks the 24th edition of Wrestlemania, which is pretty much better than the Super Bowl, the Olympics, Spider-Man 4, the Eukanuba Dog Show, a Hannah Montana concert, the fall of the Berlin Wall and the end of apartheid in South Africa combined. I emailed 411's own czar Ashish to ask if, maybe, since it IS a special occasion, I could devote this entire edition of the QnD to Wrestlemania. He promptly spat in my face (much like Orton did to Foley) and told me to "know my roll" as a music writer. He then reminded me that I already talked about this wrestling shit with last year's The Music Of Wrestlemania. (You can also check out Mikey Migo's take on the same subject.)
I thought about handing in my resignation right then and there, but then it hit me: I can still talk about Wrestlemania while delivering the massive 411 audience their dose of weekly music news, right? So let's try it out.
Despite Slash's assurances that "Velvet Revolver will go on and on", singer Scott Weiland and drummer Matt Sorum seem to disagree. The two have been waging an online war of words lately, with fans left to wonder what set the whole thing off.
Sorum blasted Weiland publicly first, inferring that the singer was ungrateful for all of the success that being on the road has given him. In other words, Matt thinks Scott is a whiny bitch for ending the tour to take care of stupid things like his family and going to rehab.
Weiland retaliated by commenting that Sorum was too immature to have a real relationship or children. In other words, Scott's response was, "I've got a girlfriend and you don't."
This all came to a head at a recent VR show in Glasgow, where Weiland told the crowd they were witnessing the final Velvet Revolver tour. Slash was immediately on damage control, saying that this SO wasn't the last Velvet Revolver tour. Loosely translated to, "We put up with Axl's shit and survived. Why wouldn't we be able to replace Scott fuckin' Weiland?"
The real losers in this situation are the other guys in Stone Temple Pilots, who are getting ready to put up with Weiland and his drug abuse again. It's sad when a band breaks up for stupid reasons like heroin.
Speaking of once great groups breaking up, Evolution could probably lay claim to the title of "Greatest Wrestling Stable of the Decade". Now, however, there's no love lost between former stablemates Triple H and WWE Champion Randy Orton. At Wrestlemania, the two will compete in a triple threat match for the title, where they'll have to face each other as well as the recently returned John Cena.
People are saying that this match has been poorly booked, but I think it's had a great longterm build. There's no denying that HHH, Cena and Orton are the biggest names on Raw, and all three men have a legitimate reason to think the title belongs to them. Triple H was forced to wrestle THREE title matches in only one PPV, dropping the last to Orton, and beginning his current reign. Cena, on the other hand, was the longest reigning WWE Champion in over twenty years when he was sidelined with a torn pec and forced to surrender the title.
To be honest, I don't usually like when the title is defended in manners other than one-on-one matches at Wrestlemania. It bastardizes the concept of "these two men are the best there is and deserve the biggest match of the year". Past matches like the Smackdown triple threat from ‘Mania 22 and the HHH/Chris Benoit/Shawn Michaels match from XX, I felt, were shoddily booked. No matter the greatness of the match (and it's my favorite ‘Mania match of all-time, even though I'm not a Benoit mark), Michaels' insertion into that match just reeked of WWE's lack of faith in Benoit to carry a buyrate without help. That stands in stark contrast to this year, as the "weakest link" is no doubt champion Orton, who has still managed to pull out some decent victories during his months as champion. With HHH winning the elimination chamber match at No Way Out and Cena winning the Rumble (we'll forget about the NWO title match nonsense), there's a logical reason for a triple threat for the first time.
This isn't my most anticipated match on the card, but I am excited because I don't think it's clear who will win. While I think we'll definitely see a new champion, I'm struggling to decide who is the best man in this situation. Triple H has been ‘Mania job boy for the last four years, and don't forget that he went out on his back to Jeff Hardy a few months ago. On the other hand you have John fucking Cena and, well, you just can't see him. Should be a fun match, hope there's blood.
If There Was A Hottie Hall Of Fame
Kylie Minogue has announced the US release date for her tenth studio album, X - this Tuesday, the 1st. It's actually been out internationally for a few weeks. To promote X, Kylie's going to be making her first US TV appearances in nearly five years. Kylie will be on the "Today Show" Monday, and then perform on "Dancing With The Stars" on Tuesday. The first single, "All I See", has already impacted radio.
I love Kylie's voice and I think her music is hypnotic. Can ANYONE say they don't like "Can't Get You Outta My Head"? And if that's not enough, just LOOK at her:
I'm sure there's a "big bad wolf" joke to be made there, but I'm too busy jerking off to think of one.
Since 1988, Kylie Minogue has released ten studio albums, and all of them have went Top 10 internationally. They've also all been certified at least platinum in most countries that count. That's a pretty impressive streak.
You know who else has an impressive streak? The Undertaker, who remains undefeated (15-0) at Wrestlemania. This year, ‘Taker will once again be challenging for the World Heavyweight Title, this time against the champ Edge. Edge won the title last year at Armageddon, after taking advantage of a freshly tombstoned Batista and a well-placed chair to ‘Taker's skull. Since then, he's escaped a triple threat rematch with help from his Rated Rmy and fended off Rey Mysterio at the Royal Rumble and No Way Out. ‘Taker, in the meantime, earned his Wrestlemania title match by winning an elimination chamber match at NWO.
While ‘Taker regularly brings his working boots to Wrestlemania and Edge has given us some of the biggest WM moments of all time, I'm just not looking forward to this match as much as I thought I would be. Perhaps it's because I've missed the last three fucking weeks of Smackdown, which has been preempted regularly on my local CW. Fucking local sports.
Folks are complaining about Edge being booked as a complete coward, and I completely agree. First off, that shit may fly in Intercontinental title booking, but the champ should at least be able to back it up from time to time. It's the difference in the legacies of Ric Flair and the Honky Tonk Man, which I think says it all right there. The thing is, Edge has it in him to be a total badass, and he's carried every show he's been on since the brand split (as long as he wasn't hurt, that is).
Even with all of Edge's accomplishments, there's no way that WWE has chosen him to be THE guy to end ‘Taker's streak. I was thinking a great choice for that would be Kane, seeing as how he's went down twice to UT (a la the Stone Cold/Rock WM series), but we all know that, IF ‘Taker ever goes down, it'll be Cena who will be covering him. Don't believe me? Who has the longest ‘Mania win streak in the WWE these days? The Dr. of Thuganomics is 4-0.
Back to Edge/Taker, I think the best we can hope for is a really good match. ‘Taker has proven he still has them in him, as he and Batista blew the roof off of Ford Field last year. My only concern is that ‘Taker and Edge's styles won't mesh as well as UT and Batista. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.
No Bitchassness
Check out Diddy's new shirt, inspired by one of his catchphrases on "Making The Band""
Another person who has proven he'll be accepting no bitchassness is The Big Show, who has repeatedly shot down all of Floyd "Money" Mayweather's shit talking and told him to just bring it. Mayweather broke Show's nose when a brawl between the two broke out at No Way Out, and Show challenged the boxer to a fight the night after on Raw.
Now, I'm not about to lie and say this will be a good match, but at least it (pardon the pun) trumps last year's big celebrity ‘Mania involvement, as Mayweather can step in the ring for himself. WWE tried their best to make Mayweather the good guy here, but the little fellow is just too easy to hate. The big story will be if Mayweather's entourage gets a little too boisterous and has their asses handed to them by the rest of the WWE roster. Hell, they've had to keep them off of live TV since their last appearance, which ended with Shane McMahon flat on his rump.
So yeah, I'm looking forward to the spectacle of this one. It's Liberace and the Rockettes, it's Tyson knocking out Shawn Michaels. It's Wrestlemania, baby! Besides, finding a believable way for Mayweather to actually WIN this match (and he will go out on top, Big Show's still a company man), is gonna be hard seeing as how Show's fist is bigger than Floyd's head. A real shitpickle for the bookers, there.
Hope T.I. Knows That Schools Have Metal Detectors Now
T.I. will likely be sentenced to 1,500 hours community service and a year in prison by the time you read this. Sources say Tip will be pleading guilty to weapons possessions charges, stemming from his October arrest, where he was caught trying to buy illegal machine guns and silencers.
Bet is on that T.I. doesn't spend too much time behind bars, if any. The way the deal read, his prison time wouldn't even start until the community service hours (which will consist of T.I. talking in schools about the dangers of guns and drugs) have been completed, and, even working five hours a day every day, that would be nearly a year from now. I guess T.I.'s lawyers are just hoping the courts will forget about the prison time by then. They must have been listening to too much of Insane Clown Posse's "I Want My Shit"…you know, where Violent J had been in jail for like 100 years and everyone forgot why he was there so they let him out?
Talk about an obscure reference.
Speaking of black guys trying to break out, both Shelton Benjamin and United States Champion MVP will be trying to break the glass ceiling and win Wrestlemania's Money In The Bank Ladder Match, where the winner retrieves a contract stating he can face any world champion at any time for one full year. Benjamin and MVP won't just have to face each other, but also Intercontinental Champion Chris Jericho, WWE Tag Team Champion John Morrison, last year's winner (and the only man to NOT cash in the MitB for a title victory) Mr. Kennedy, Carlito and CM Punk.
Let me make this clear: last year's Money in the Bank match SUCKED. All I remember is Jeff Hardy breaking an obviously rigged ladder (seriously, have you ever seen a metal ladder break in half? At least make this shit believable, dog) and an admittedly cool spot of Mr. Kennedy delivering the Kenton to tiny Hornswoggle. Even worse, Kennedy got hurt not long after and hastily (and uncharacteristically) lost the MitB shot to Edge, who called him a pussy or something.
This year's looks a little better, though I don't understand why we had to cram in seven guys. Weren't six enough? And with obvious winner Jeff Hardy now suspended (but luckily not in ashes), the winner of the match is more wide open. Kennedy blows, so I'd rather he not pick it up again, but any of the other guys would be interesting to see elevated. It's funny that three ECW guys are in the match, seeing as how the Royal Rumble taught us that the ECW Title doesn't matter (as the champ, Chavo, found himself competing in the RR match for the WM title shot). The only thing missing is the requisite big man, but really, what did Kane add to the match other than some flaming ladders for his intro?
I'm going to call the winner as CM Punk who, purely based on win-loss records and big ECW matches, has had the biggest year of anyone in WWE.
As The Britney Turns
Well, the world once again marveled at Britney Spears' ability to perform simple tasks, as her cameo on ABC's sitcom "How I Met Your Mother" drew record viewers. Britney had a few lines on the show and, can you believe it, never forgot any of them. And she was cleaned up too and not doing drugs. Wow!
What the fuck America, it's not like it was live.
Still, media is calling this cameo Britney's "comeback" and…come on assholes, she never EVER went away! Just check out 411's news archives.
Speaking of hot divas who are adored by the paparazzi, Melina will tag with WWE Women's Champion Beth Phoenix to ruin the fun of current Playboy cover girl Maria and former Playboy cover girl Ashley in a Wrestlemania Bunnymania match. Snoop Dogg himself will serve as the Mizzaster of Cizzeremonies.
I think it's hilarious how the WWE books the ‘Mania women's match the EXACT same way every fucking year. Are we supposed to not notice that every March a new chick poses for Playboy and the top heel divas get jealous, usually resulting in a former Playboy-posing diva getting involved? The funniest thing is how Candice was hurt just a week before the show and the bookers plugged in Ashley (who seriously fucking needs to eat something…I could play a Steve Reich album on her fucking ribs. Yes, a rare xylophone reference in the QnD), and no one seemed to care.
Who will win this match? I just hope Beth Phoenix does something sick to Ashley and sends her packing for good. Beth Phoenix…the things I'd let that chick do to me. Plus, she's a big Pantera fan. And speaking of hot chicks, why does WWE never use Maryse?
Oh, and on the subject of Playboy, ex-Destiny's Child singer Kelly Rowland is rumored to be posing soon. 411 released this official statement upon hearing the news:
"Nice."
Game Over?
The Game has announced a release date for his next album, Los Angeles Times, which he has hinted will be his last. The set drops on June 24th and Game promises is will be "controversial". We here at the QnD have mastered the concept of a rapper's retirement, meaning we should expect a new Game CD, probably titled Jayceon Taylor, in 2010.
Another man facing retirement is "Nature Boy" Ric Flair, who was told by WWE Chariman Mr. McMahon a few months ago that, if he loses a match, he would be forced to hang up his tights and robe for good. Since then, Flair has beaten back challenges by Umaga, Kennedy, MVP and McMahon himself. With his induction into the WWE Hall Of Fame set for this Saturday, Flair handpicked his Wrestlemania opponent: Shawn Michaels. Shawn was hesitant, and eventually opted out, stating he didn't want to be the man to retire Ric Flair. Flair was understandably pissed at Michaels' assumption that he'd be an easy win, and goaded Shawn into the match anyway. On Raw Monday night, Shawn said he was gonna take Flair out like Old Yeller.
What can you say about Flair vs. HBK at Wrestlemania? It's a dream match. Sure, Flair is a few years past his prime (hey, he was even pulling out good matches at WM X-8 vs. ‘Taker, so he's not that far gone…holy shit, that was six years ago?), but I truly believe that he will steal the show or die trying. With his age and condition, let's just hope he succeeds in the former.
With Flair getting the big submission to the WWE Champ to close out Raw Monday night, I think it's pretty obvious that this will be his final hurrah. Look for 25 solid minutes and plenty of tears to close it out.
Everything Else
Kelly Osborne recently got on the Spice Girls' case, questioning their parenting ability. Kelly stated that the Spices having their young children on stage every night during their recent tour probably wasn't good for them. Uh…didn't Ozzy master the art of whoring his family on "The Osbornes"? Don't Kelly and Jack both have the drug problems to prove it?
Speaking of bad parenting, John Bradshaw Layfield proved recently that Mr. McMahon wasn't as bad of a parent as we thought, as the midget who claimed to be his long-lost bastard son, Hornswoggle, was revealed to actually belong to Finlay. The reason for the deception was never explained, though it did lead to lots of shots of a large Texan beating up a leprechaun. Hornswoggle's real daddy, Finlay, has challenged JBL to a Wrestlemania Belfast Brawl.
Don't look for anything BUT a straight up fight here, and hopefully this match will fill our ‘Mania blood quotient. Can you say potato? And look for the triumphant return of Hornswoggle and an Irish jig to end this one.
Amy Winehouse's brief stay in rehab couldn't keep her from the nose candy, but the recent drug-related death of Corrine Bailey-Rae's husband, who also played horns in Amy's band for a while, has reportedly woken Amy up to how far she's fallen. Rae's death hit Amy pretty hard…till she realized she wasn't out of coke after all.
Speaking of people who have fallen fast, Batista, who went into last year's Wrestlemania as the World Heavyweight Champion and had the match of the night (and year) with The Undertaker, will be taking on Umaga in a battle being billed as the Smackdown Vs. Raw match for brand supremacy. Never mind that both the Money in the Bank match and the 24-man Battle Royal feature wrestlers from Raw, Smackdown and ECW, or that Flair vs. Michaels, JBL vs. Finlay and possibly the ECW title match will be Raw vs. Smackdown. Look for Batista to grab the victory and probably punch something really hard as he watches the rest of the show backstage. Too bad, too, as once again, based purely on W/L records and big matches, Batista and Umaga have had the biggest years on their respective brands.
Enjoy that Battle Royal next year Big Dave. Hopefully it will be on the DVD!
Bob Marley's widow is blocking the use of Marley's music in an upcoming biopic by the Weinsteins. So, when you watch that movie, remember THAT'S the reason "Bob Marley" is singing Peter Tosh and Toots Hibbert songs…because his widow is a cunt.
Speaking of Jamaicans, ECW's Kofi Kingston will be one of 24 wrestlers competing in a pre-‘Mania Battle Royal, with the winner set to get a shot at the ECW Title immediately after. I'd like to see Tommy Dreamer win this one, especially since he got jobbed TWICE on Tuesday's ECW On Sci-Fi.
Tejano singer Emilio was in a tragic bus accident this week and is currently in a coma. Doctors are saying Emilio is in a struggle and will face a long recovery if he survives. The QnD certainly sends its prayers Emilio's way.
Speaking of Mexicans facing hard times, ECW Champion Chavo Guerrero could be facing a hard time when he has to defend his title against an unknown opponent at Wrestlemania. I think we can guarantee Chavo will go down in this one, simply to make for a great ‘Mania moment. The question is, to who? I already said I'm pulling for Dreamer, and since Chavo is a heel, that means half of the Battle Royal contestants can be eliminated. Here are the likely candidates.
Jesse, Festus - Neither biscuits nor gravy will be walking off with the ECW title, as I figure 4 to 1 odds on Festus (he's got the size to win the Battle Royal, at least) and 5 to 1 on Jesse (kid's never even been in a singles match).
Val Venis - Val's been around forever now and I think we all know his best days are behind him. When he came back from injury and all he got was to do the J.O.B. on Raw, you knew that ship had sailed. I'll put Val's chances at winning at 3 to 1 (hey, the Battle Royal's on WWE.com, a place Val is right at home considering he never leaves Heat). It's still better than Ron Paul's chances.
Shannon Moore, Hacksaw Jim Duggan & Hardcore Holly - These guys have all spent their time in tag ranks this year. Shannon has seen a lot of success on Smackdown (though he's been carried by Jimmy Wang Yang) and Hardcore Holly has spent a while as half of the World Tag Champs. Sure, Jim Duggan has Battle Royal credibility seeing as how he won the first Royal Rumble, but that WAS 20 years ago. 2 to 1 odds on all of these fellas.
Kofi Kingston - While Kofi has had an impressive winning streak on ECW, who has the guy really beaten? James Curtis? The fact that he's a relatively new face lowers his odds, too. I'd say odds on seeing Kofi walk out the ECW Champion are 6 to 1 based purely on his record, but given that the E is very high on him (and he fits the Floridian theme of this year's ‘Mania), we'll go 2 to 1.
Tommy Dreamer, Cody Rhodes, Jimmy Wang Yang & Jamie Noble - Even odds on all these guys. Cody has the lineage, but once again, I think his current career as a tag team specialist will hurt him. Both Jimmy Wang Yang and Jamie Noble would match up well with Chavo, but they're both cruiserweights, making a Battle Royal harder to survive. Of all these guys, I think Tommy Dreamer is most likely, since he'll be looking for revenge for the double beatdown on ECW. Of course, we always have this guy…
Kane - I would say Kane has twice the odds anyone else has and is likely winner of not only the Battle Royal, but of the ECW Title. Kane has the size to take out the other 23 guys and plus, he's spent a lot of time on ECW (hell, they show him in the Sci Fi intro). Kane should handily squash Chavo as long as he stays away from bigger heels, like Khali and Mark Henry, in the Battle Royal.
I guarantee you I'm the only one giving you an analytical look at that fucking Battle Royal.
NEW RELEASES FOR APRIL 1, 2008
WHAT EVERYONE WILL BUY:
George Strait - Troubadour - Yes, you read that right. I think King George will take out R.E.M. this week. Sure, Accelerate has had an amazing viral campaign, but I think the sting of R.E.M.'s past few sub-par albums will be hard to shake off. Strait, on the other hand, has been pleasing his audience for three decades, and they've put him at #1 twice before, as recently as '05. Plus, I really love the new single, "I Saw God Today".
WHAT WILL BE NUMBER ONE:
Well son of a bitch if Danity Kane didn't beat out Flo Rida. I think two things hurt the guy. First, "Low" is old news. That song was #1 back in January, and released on the Step Up 2 The Streets soundtrack a month ago. There just wasn't an urgency. Still, I wouldn't have called DK, who weren't exactly setting the world on fire, to beat him. I guess the power of Diddy is stronger than I'd thought.
For this week, Counting Crows haven't hit #1 since 1996, and I don't look for them to change that now. Saturday Nights & Sunday Mornings is a great set, though, and will debut strong, definitely Top 10. I figure Panic At The Disco have this week locked, though, and their only real competition will be Danity Kane, who stand to move over 100k in their second week. The B-52's may get a little love, too, but I don't look for even Wrestlemania to boost WWE The Music, Vol. 8 into the upper echelon.
WHAT YOU SHOULD BUY:
There's always something worth buying in the New Release section. Here are my picks:
Van Morrison - Keep It Simple - My brother got Van Morrison's At The Movies comp for Christmas and, damn, this guy has done some amazing songs. The new album looks to sound just as good if "That's Entertainment" is any indication.
George Strait - Troubadour - I'm still high on Strait since seeing him live last month. Plus, XM is dedicating an entire channel to the guy. There's no such thing as a bad George Strait album, so pick this up.
The Rolling Stones: Shine A Light - This live album is the soundtrack to Martin Scorsese's upcoming documentary. Features collaborations with Christina Aguilera and Jack White, which is interesting enough.
Kathy Mattea - Coal - Kathy Mattea actually stole my idea for this one, with an entire album dedicated to the Appalachian mining culture. I WILL be hearing this one.
WHAT'S HOT ON THE DIAL?
Billboard has about a million charts, so each week I'm gonna round up the #1s from each format. That way, no matter WHAT station you flip to when not using your presets, you'll be aware of what you might hear. Newly crowned #1s are in bold:

Gere are some chicks who may be Glamazons, or may be the best thing since Sliced Bread, but they can all teach us What Love (or lust) Is…
THE END
Hope you all had fun. Be sure to drop me a line on what you liked, didn't, etc.
