The Great Rock News Report 04.30.08
Posted by Daniel Wilcox on 04.30.2008
You can tell it's almost Summer as I've got line-up news on major festivals including Ozzfest, Glastonbury, Virgin, Download, Reading and Monolith. Plus, there's more talk of Metallica's upcoming album, Fall Out Boy's "Beat It" video and a Jimi Hendrik sex tape!
Morning all, and welcome to another edition of the Great [Wednesday] Rock Report [Vol. 666]. Due to me getting called in for a late shift at work, I didn't have long to throw this together so it's not as thorough as I'd planned. Still, there's plenty of news so let's get to it.
Possible release date for Metallica's forthcoming album
Amazon.com is currently listing an October 28, 2008 release date for the new Metallica album.
It should be noted, however, that this information has not yet been corroborated by the band or Warner Bros. Metallica has set up a web site at MissionMetallica.com that says it will offer fans a chance to "experience the new album before it's done."
Drummer Lars Ulrich said the band intends to explore "everything" in terms of selling its music once its current recording contract expires. But although the group's upcoming ninth studio album is its last with Warner Bros., Ulrich said they would be hesitant to follow in the footsteps of U2 and Madonna and sign a comprehensive "360 deal" with Live Nation.
And just to reiterate what I said last week, rumors of the band working with Evanescence vocalist Amy Lee have been shot down by Lee.
Details of this year's Ozzfest Ozzy and Metallica to headline
According to Blabbermouth.net, this summer's Ozzfest will consist of two separate two-day (Saturday/Sunday) events one of which will be held in Dallas in late July/early August, with Ozzy Osbourne headlining one day and Metallica headlining the next.
Not only are these two bands been announced for the Dallas show, but so has recently re-united thrash metalliers Rigor Mortis. The band has announced that they will play in the Dallas Ozzfest on August 9th, with Metallica rumored to close that show out.
Bob Dylan, The Stooges, Paramore and more added to Virgin Festival line-up
Bob Dylan, Iggy & the Stooges, Paramore, Chuck Berry (backed by the Silver Beats), the Black Keys and Wilco will join previously announced headliners Foo Fighters, Jack Johnson, Kanye West, Nine Inch Nails and Stone Temple Pilots for the third annual Virgin Mobile Festival at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore on August 9th -10th.
In addition to two main stages, there will be a dedicated dance tent featuring electronic music, including a Moby DJ set.
Main stage acts on August 9th are, in alphabetical order, Bloc Party, Cat Power, Chuck Berry and the Silver Beats, Citizen Cope, Duffy, Foo Fighters, Gogol Bordello, Jack Johnson, KT Tunstall, Lupe Fiasco, the Offspring, Paramore, Rodrigo y Gabriela, Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, the Swell Season and Wilco.
On August 10th, the main stage acts will include the Black Keys, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Bob Dylan, the Go! Team, Iggy & the Stooges, Kanye West, Lil Wayne, Nine Inch Nails, Stone Temple Pilots, She & Him, the reunited Shudder To Think, Taking Back Sunday and Andrew Bird's Bowl Of Fire.
Dance tent acts include Underworld, Moby, DJ Dan & Donald Glaude, Erol Alkan, Ferry Corsten, Soulwax, Steve Lawler, Armin van Buuren, Chromeo, Deadmau5, Pendulum and Richie Hawtin.
Tickets go onsale May 3rd.
Damn. It's times like this that make me wish that I lived in the States. Then again, nah.
Scott Weiland headed to jail
Stone Temple Pilots frontman Scott Weiland has been sentenced to 192 hours, or eight days, in county jail for his November DUI arrest.
Oh no, a whole eight days!
Weiland was not present for the sentencing, but entered a no-contest plea in through his attorney Anthony Brooklier. Not only does Weiland have to do 192 hours, but he was also ordered to complete an 18-month alcohol program and pay almost $2,000 in fine. He will be put on a four-year summary probation.
Oh no, almost $2000!
Weiland has until May 28th to serve the sentence.
The Offspring to reissue their older crap to promote their new crap
On June 17th, Epitaph will be re-issuing The Offspring's Epitaph debut, Ignition as well as the greatest selling independent record of all time, Smash.
Both albums will be completely remastered, and Smash will include a new 24-page booklet.
On the same day, The Offspring also plans on releasing their newest album, Rise and Fall, Rage and Grace.
New Black Sabbath album not likely
Heaven And Hell (Ronnie James Dio, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Vinny Appice) recently sat down with Goldmine contributor Bryan Reesman for an extensive cover story interview where they talked about their entire history, including touring, their various reunions, and recording a new album together.
During the interview Geezer addressed the very unlikely idea that Black Sabbath would record a new album with Ozzy Osbourne. In fact, he made a joke of notion.
"I don't think we've got that many years left to do an Ozzy album," Butler said. "Maybe we'll do it in Hell. We could do quite well down in Hell." They actually seem rather intent with the Dio fronted line-up they have now.

Coldplay turn an old bakery into a HQ
Coldplay have bought an old bakery. The band thinks the ugly building, in London's Primrose Hill, is the perfect place for their new headquarters away from fans and paparazzi.
Really, paparazzi follow these guys around?
Singer Chris Martin explained: "For years I used to walk past this building everyday and think, 'What an ugly place.' 'Then one day a 'to let' sign appeared outside. I thought, 'Hmmm that place is so ugly, I bet no one would bother us if we move in there.'
I bet he's right.
They plan to be based there while promoting their new album, Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends, due for release on June 12th.
Coldplay have announced they will play two free shows, in New York and London, to support the album's release.
Yellowcard to go on an "indefinite hiatus"
Florida pop punkers Yellowcard are to go their separate ways after their current US acoustic tour wraps-up on May 10 in Indianapolis.
"We are calling it an 'Indefinite Hiatus'," said frontman Ryan Key in an interview with The University Of Tampa newspaper. "It could be a year, 10 years, or 6 months. It's been an interesting time in this business and [with] our record label. It's just... We kind of need a break.
"I think it appears everything is ok on its surface but we definitely need a little bit of time to figure out our personal lives," added the singer. "It doesn't have anything to do with turmoil in the band... I think we just need a break. Hopefully we will get back to making another record sometime, if not it may be our last but we don't really know. We're just keeping the door open."
You hear that silence? That's the sound of music lovers everywhere not giving a shit.
Kill Hannah and more added to Download bill
Kill Hannah are amongst another group of bands to be added to the UK's Download festival this week. Kids In Glass Houses, Slaves To Gravity, Black Tide, The Wildhearts, Rival Schools, Zebrahead, Haunts, Canterbury, Invasion, Twin Method and Amon Amarth.all confirmed their place on the bill this week as well.
Kids In Glass Houses are excited to play the festival for the second time.
"When we played last year, we went down shockingly well," vocalist Aled Phillips recalls. "Our tent was absolutely rammed, so it was really humbling and exciting for us. To play again is amazing."
"We're fucking delighted to be playing the world's premier rock festival," adds Slaves To Gravity frontman Tommy Gleeson. "We're honoured to join the legions of legendary artists who have rocked Donington over the years. Bring it on!"
Rising Floridians Black Tide are relishing sharing the stage with their metal heroes.?"Playing Download is a real honour!" says frontman Gabriel Garcia. "It just makes it that much better getting to play with the likes of Judas Priest, Motorhead and Kiss!"

Jimi Hendrix sex tape on the way
Vivid Entertainment are set to release a Jimi Hendrix sex tape, that depicts Hendrix (although there's no certainty it is Hendrix) having sex with two brunette women. Sounds like a riot.
Quick News Bites
- Earlier this month Southern California metal/hardcore outfit Love Thyne added former Eighteen Visions and Throwdown member Keith Barney to their line-up on guitar.
- Seattle, Washington hardcore band Sinking Ships is apparently calling it quits. Though no formal announcement has been made, the group has now publicly stated that their "last two shows" will be at Rain Fest in Seattle and Sound and Fury in Southern California.
- Christian metalcore royalty Underoath have just finished the recording sessions for their forthcoming sixth studio album.
Co-produced by Killswitch Engage's Adam Dutkiewicz and As Cities Burn collaborator Matt Goldman, the untitled album is scheduled for release on September 1st.
- Oasis' Noel Gallagher has slammed Manchester City FC owner Thaksin Shinawatra for his apparent plan to sack the club's current manager, Sven-Goran Eriksson.
Gallagher, an avid City fan, said that sacking the manager, which Shinawatra is expected to do soon, would be against all the wishes of Manchester City fans.
- And finally, in a follow-up to last week's FOB news item, Fall Out Boy have posted the new video from their new live album, ****: Live in Phoenix. The track is (of course) a cover of the Michael Jackson hit, "Beat It" and was directed by Shane Drake. The video can be seen here;
Sorry, Synn, but that kicks ass.
And with that, I'm out of here for another week. Look out for my review of HIM's new live CD/DVD over thext coming days, as well as 411 Music Fact or Fiction. Make sure you're back here next week for more rock news!
Metallica sucks. Lars acts like a bad ass on stage, but is a wimp in real life. I guess if I were 5 feet tall I'd be a wimp too. He's also the the guy who cried about Napster and not having enough money.

Re: "The Offspring to reissue their older crap to promote their new crap."
Should read "Epitaph reissues Offspring's old crap, to profit off of Offspring's new Sony crap." If you're going to bash the band in your "news," at least get the facts right.

What's with all the hate toward the Offspring? Ignition was iffy, but Smash is certainly NOT "crap".
