The Great Rock News Report 05.07.08
Posted by Daniel Wilcox on 05.07.2008
New Oasis material finds its way to the net, Nine Inch Nails release The Slip, Pearl Jam and Boston prepare new material, Jack White saves a fan and there's more festival updates including a preview of this weekend's Give It A Name festival featuring 30 Seconds To Mars and Paramore! All that and a whole lot more, inside!
Do you know what's awesome? Knowing that in two days, you'll be finishing up school for a 12-week break, and knowing that this weekend you'll be headed to Sheffield for the Give It A Name festival. And because I'm in such a good mood, we'll celebrate GIAN with some videos of the bands set to appear.
On top of that, there's the usual news stuff. On with the show.
But first, a video!
"A Beautiful Lie" – 30 Seconds To Mars
Somewhat breathtaking.
Wilcox's Festival Preview: Give It A Name 2008
This weekend, London and Sheffield will play host to the 4th annual Give It A Name festival, to be headlined by Paramore and 30 Seconds To Mars. With Funeral For A Friend, My Chemical Romance, HIM, Jimmy Eat World and Lostprophets being past headliners, this year's line-up looks comparatively weak on paper.
The Line Up:
Day 1 (Main Stage) – Paramore, Plain White T's, Alkaline Trio, Finch, Set Your Goals, Cobra Starship, Chiodos
Day 2 (Main Stage) – 30 Seconds To Mars, Billy Talent, Glassjaw, Silverstein, The Blackout, Strike Anywhere, Envy On The Coast
Day 1 (Second Stage) – The Audition, All Time Low, My American Heart, MC Lars, Mayday Parade, Meg and Dia, Broadway Calls
Day 2 (Second Stage) – Anti Flag, Armor For Sleep, You Me At Six, State Radio, The Color Fred, Four Year Strong, Mexicolas
That's pretty underwhelming, but there are a fair few bands there that I've heard good things about but haven't had the chance to see live. 30 Seconds… always put on a hell of a live show and their set should be pretty damn epic, much like it was when I saw them in February. Part of the reason I'm not overly excited about this show is because I've seen both headliners already this year and the supporting acts are pretty weak, with only Cobra Starship and You Me At Six being certainties to put on a good show. Billy Talent are very much hit or miss but should cause some good mosh pits and such.
The bonus for me is the fact that I got my tickets at a decent knock down price and I should be able to hang out with a few of the bands before their sets. Having met Paramore before, I'm looking forward to chilling with Hayley Williams and co. once again, and hopefully I'll get to have a chat with some of the other acts too. With that said, the big acts are going to have to bring all they've got for this show to be anywhere near as good as previous years have been, and something's telling me that Plain White T's and Alkaline Trio aren't going to be much to write home about.
As is always the case when I preview a festival, I'll have the review of the show up sometime next week.
New Oasis material leaked to the web
Three new Oasis songs have leaked onto the internet – months before their new album is due to be released.
The three songs - ‘Nothing On Me', 'I Wanna Live A Dream (In My Record Machine)' and ‘Stop The Clocks' – have been circulating online throughout the day. It's understood that the band's management company have been working to remove the songs, which are also on video-sharing site YouTube.
The band have yet to comment on their new album, which will be their first studio release since 2005's Don't' Believe The Truth.
The album was recorded in Abbey Road studios in London at the end of last year and Los Angeles in January.
I've heard the racks; they kick ass.
Metallica and Offspring to headline Weenie Roast
Sounds about right.
Metallica, the Offspring, the Raconteurs, Rise Against, Bad Religion, Pennywise and the Bravey are among the acts confirmed for KROQ-Los Angeles' Weenie Roast, to be held May 17th at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre in Irvine, California.
Also on the bill for "Weenie Roast Y Fiesta 2008" are Scars on Broadway, Seether, Flogging Molly, Atreyu, MGMT, Flobots and Ludo.
Actually, that's a good number of kick ass bands there.
Along with Weenie Roast, Metallica had two U.S. performances lined up: Tucson, Arizona's KFMA Day (May 16th) and Manchester, Tennessee's Bonnaroo Music Festival (June 13th). They also have a few European dates lined up for late summer.
The Cure to proceed album release with string of four singles
Legendary rockers The Cure have decided to precede their upcoming 13th album with a monthly single series. With their still-untitled album due out September 13, 2008 on Suretone/Geffen, the Cure will be issuing four singles, all of which will arrive on the 13th day of each month, will be available in physical and digital formats. May's entry is "The Only One" backed by non-album B-side "NY Trip," to be followed by "Freakshow"/"All Kinds Of Stuff" on June 13. Details of the final two singles have not yet been made available. The new record is the follow-up to The Cure, which was released in 2004
The Last Shadow Puppets set for Reading and Leeds
The Last Shadow Puppets, the side project of Alex Turner and Miles Kane, will co-headline the Radio 1 Stage at this year's Reading and Leeds Festival.
The show will be the duo's first full live performance and sees them join The Cribs as headliners.
The Last Shadow Puppets debut album, The Age of the Understatement, topped the UK charts last month.
The album is the third time that Turner has scored a number one, his other two coming in the Arctic Monkeys.
The pair will headline the stage in Leeds on August 22nd and Reading on August 24th.
The Artic Monkeys are terrible, but the Shadow Puppets are great and their album is great stuff. That makes about five decent bands at Reading this year.

"Guilty Pleasure" – Cobra Starship
Somewhat less breathtaking.
Back to the news!
Nine Inch Nails "reward fans" with The Slip
Nine Inch Nails, who were just days ago offering two singles at zero cost have gone one better and offered their entire new album, The Slip, free of charge.
According to the band's website the free download is being made available "as a thank you to our fans for [their] continued support".
Unlike Trent Reznor's previous release Ghosts, which grossed millions of dollars in just three days, there won't be a physical release of The Slip until July.
The ten track album can be downloaded completely free of charge directly from the band's website.
Personally, I'm not a fan of the band and I can't stand Reznor but with that said, you can't argue with offering up stuff like this for free and at the very least, fans will get their money's worth.
411's Ben Czajkowski has his review of the album up here.
Boston to work on new album after summer tour
Boston leader Tom Scholz tells Billboard.com he hopes to finish recording the band's next studio album after its summer tour and have it out "just after the first of the year."
Scholz says the album -- Boston's first since 2002's "Corporate America" -- is a mix of "really straightforward rock 'n' roll songs and some things that are pretty esoteric.
"When I first started," he continues, "I was doing music that had pretty simple themes. Then as I got into 'Third Stage' and 'Walk On' I got a little more technical and a little more involved, more complicated. In this one I'm trying to do both."
The new album will also include several songs from "Corporate America" that Scholz is remixing, rearranging and, in some cases, completely re-recording -- including the title track, "You Gave Up on Love" and "Someone."
"'Corporate America' was a really poor seller," Scholz acknowledges. "Very few people have heard it. I'd like to give some of these songs another chance to be heard."
Brad Delp, whose 2007 suicide "completely derailed" Scholz, appears on a couple of tracks on the new album.
Scholz says he felt "very weird" about playing Boston music without Delp at a tribute show last August, but has grown more comfortable with the idea during rehearsals for the summer tour with former Stryper singer Michael Sweet and Tommy DeCarlo, a fan Scholz discovered via a Delp tribute DeCarlo posted to YouTube.
"Brad was the most amazing musician [and] singer I've ever known. There's nobody on the face of this Earth that could replace him and do what he did," Scholz says. "But I have to say that these two guys, Michael and Tommy, do a really impressive job of performing these songs live.
"So it seemed wrong not to take it back out, and there were an awful lot of people out there that don't want to hear Boston go away," he adds.
Boston's tour kicks off June 6 in Thunder Bay, Ontario. Scholz has prepared a revised version of the group's "Greatest Hits" album to coincide with the tour.
Queen and others set to perform for Nelson Mandela's 90th
Queen, Leona Lewis, Annie Lennox and the Soweto Gospel Choir are among the acts that will appear at a concert for Nelson Mandela's 90th birthday in June.
The former South African president will travel to London for the 27 June event, which will also feature Dame Shirley Bassey, Simple Minds and Razorlight.
Tickets go on public sale on Friday and Hyde Park will host a crowd of 46,664 - Mr Mandela's old prison number. It is now the name of his Aids charity, which will get proceeds from the show.
Organisers have promised further stars on the bill, with "several major artists keeping silent about their involvement in order to take both Mr. Mandela and the audience by surprise", a statement said.
Eminem, U2, Amy Winehouse and the Spice Girls are among the other acts who have been mentioned in the press.
The other confirmed performers include Sugababes, Andrea and Sharon Corr, Eddy Grant, Italian star Zucchero and Spanish group Amaral, while Queen will perform with vocalist Paul Rodgers.
Am I the only one who struggles picturing Mandela being a big Eminem fan?
Pearl Jam working on new material
Pearl Jam has begun work on a new album, which will be the follow up to 2006's self titled release.
According to Billboard.com, the band is currently laying down four or five songs for its ninth studio album. The guys are teaming up with longtime producer Brendan O'Brien for the first time since 1998. O'Brien is known for taking a short amount of time in the studio.
The band is heading out on a short tour of the East Coast starting on June 11th.
If this is half as good as their last effort, it'll be great.
Jack White helps out fainting fan at gig
Jack White saved a fainting fan at at The Raconteurs gig last Tuesday (April 29).
The girl fainted at The Uptown Theater in Kansas City.
According to sources, White came offstage in the middle of playing 'Carolina Drama' and picked the fainting girl up. He handed her to security where they escorted her backstage.
White then came back onstage and finished the track.
Member of the audience KevRocket wrote to the Back To Rockville blog: "I knew something was wrong when Jack came to the edge of the stage.
"I was surprised when he ended up picking this girl up and out of harm's way. I have seen a lot of concerts, and that was a first."
I'm anything but a fan of Jack White, but that, ladies and gentleman, is classy. Take notes.

Bullet frontman thinks new songs are "future classics"
Bullet For My Valentine frontman Matt Tuck spoke with Australia's Beat magazine about the band's second studio album 'Scream Aim Fire', which he predicts will be an effort long remembered. "It's always been about the songs as a whole and I think these songs have got the potential to be great future classics," Tuck explaiend. "So that was very important for us, to have them stand the test of time. We tried to make everything a bit more dynamic on this album. [BFMV's debut album] 'The Poison' was what it was because we had so many songs to choose from, from many periods and years of our lives but with this one we just wanted to take all the elements that make us what we are and how we sound as a band and just make them a lot more extreme."
Sure, whatever you say there, Matt.
Police announce "last show ever"
A New York City press conference featuring the Police and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg today (May 6) heralds the band's final concert ever, to be held in New York at a date to be announced in August.
As far it being their last concert ever, file it under the "I'll believe it when I see it category" for now.

Mrs. FOB not to go the way of Spears, Lohan
OK, so Ashlee Simpson is anything but rock, but I'm letting it slide because a) she's hot as fuck and b) that's all I got (like I need another reason).
Ashlee Simpson - who recently announced her engagement to Fall Out Boy's Pete Wentz - says she won't follow in the footsteps of troubled stars Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan because she is in control of her life.
She said: "I don't see myself ever following the path those girls take. I'm almost 24. I'm pretty together and I'm getting married. I wouldn't ever let myself get that way and I don't surround myself with yes-people. I think that's the most important thing. People don't control me or anything I do and I've never had that problem."
She continues, "Pete is my support system. We definitely give honest opinions of each other. I love his music and he's so supportive of everything I do."
Well that's good to hear. Meanwhile in the Wentz/Simpson household…
Pete Wentz sued over fan beating
Um, whoops?
Pete Wentz was slapped with a lawsuit earlier this week over the alleged beating of a fan following a Fall Out Boy show in Chicago on July 12 2007.
In fairness, most people would agree that being a Fall Out Boy fan warrants a beating anyway, though you wouldn't expect it to come from FOB themselves. Go figure.
Chicago resident Andy Kallas alleges the bassist and his ten members of his entourage attacked him at Schuba's Tavern following a Fall Out Boy show "without authorization or provocation". The 11 men "struck, kicked and beat" Kallas for several minutes causing "serious injuries to his head, mouth and face," the suit alleges.
Newspaper reports at the time said that a punch-up broke out after a fan taunted Wentz about dating pop strumpet Ashlee Simpson, although Kallas claims that it wasn't him and he did nothing to provoke Wentzy.
The lawsuit accuses Wentz and his entourage of one count of assault and battery and one count of false imprisonment for refusing to allow the plaintiff to leave while they kicked his ass. Kallas also claims Wentz is negligent for failing to "properly instruct and train his security personnel".
Kallas also claims that he's suffered "emotional injury and anxiety" since the incident and would like Wentzy to cough-up $200,000 in damages.
Dude is such a noob.
Even more names added to Download
From First To Last, The Fall Of Troy, Beat Union, Stone Gods, Saxon and Between The Buried And Me are among artists that have been added to the ever-increasing Download 2008 festival bill this week.
"We are beyond excited to get to play at Download this year and share the stage with some of our favourite bands," says From First To Last frontman Matt Good. "We can't wait to see all our new and old friends!"
"I'm chomping at the bit to finally play Download," adds The Fall Of Troy's drummer Andrew Forsman. "I've heard so many great things about the festival. I'm also looking forward to drinking a few beers!"
Also playing will be Finger Eleven, Big Linda, The Haze, Galvatrons, Last Supper, Blackhole, Rolo Tomassi, Malefice, Fighting With Wire, Mexicolas, Caimbo, Glamour Of The Kill, Cry for Silence, Sons Of Albion and Army Of Freshmen.
The full list of other bands on the bill so far is as follows:
36 Crazy Fists, A Day To Remember, Ace Frehley, Airbourne, Alesana, Alter Bridge, Amon Amarth, Animal Alpha, Apocalyptica, Army Of Freshmen, Ash, August Burns Red, Beat Union, Between The Buried And Me, Biffy Clyro, Big Linda, Black Stone Cherry, Black Tide, Blackhole, Bleeding Through, Brigade, Bullet For My Valentine, Caimbo, Canterbury, Cavalera Conspiracy, Children Of Bodom, Chiodos, Coheed & Cambria, Comeback Kid, Cry for Silence, Disturbed, Elliot Minor, Exit Ten, Fighting With Wire, Fightstar, Finger Eleven, From First To Last, Galvatrons, Glamour Of The Kill, Haunts, HIM, Hostile, In Flames, Incubus, Invasion, Jimmy Eat World, Job For A Cowboy, Jonathan Davis (Korn), Judas Priest, Kid Rock, Kids In Glass Houses, Kill Hannah, Kiss, Last Supper, Lostprophets, Madina Lake, Malefice, Mexicolas, Motorhead, Municipal Waste, The Offspring, Pendulum, Rise Against, Rival Schools, Rolo Tomassi, Rose Tattoo, Saxon, Seether, Simple Plan, Slaves To Gravity, Sons Of Albion, Stone Gods, Testament, The Black Dahlia Murder, The Devil Wears Prada, The Dillinger Escape Plan, The Fall Of Troy, The Haze, The Subways, The Wildhearts, Throwdown, Trigger The Bloodshed, Twin Method, Valient Thorr, Within Temptation and Zebrahead. The bands highlighted in bold are Wilcox's "must see" bands of the weekend.
And that brings the number of acts to something like 85. The thing I hate about festivals like this is you know that there's going to be a couple of bands you're desperate to see that are playing at the same time.
When the headline acts were announced months ago, I decided I wasn't going to go to Download this year, and with Offspring and Kiss headlining, why would I? But now there are so many bands playing who rarely gig this side of the pond that I'd be crazy not to go, and I've got my three-day tickets. This may turn out to be one of the greatest weekends of my life so far (shame about the headliners).
